To all you Dune fans.
My faith in humanity is restored.
For now.
Thank you for posting.
I for one would not want the Butlerian Jihad. That story (the writing) aggravated
me. I'd just like a skirmish game dealing with kanly. Troops with ballistics, knives,
armor, etc.
And also, there is this for inspiration:

God, I love that army.

Dune would be great as a skirmish game. So would Game of Thrones... the usual issue will be unit variety, but it can be dealt with.

Did you know that the naval sequences in Red October and Red Storm Rising were based on wargames actually played by Clancy and Larry Bond? I am not sure if they actually played one another, or how involved Bond was directly, but they were gamed using Harpoon.

Wow, I've been away for the weekend, and there are loads of great suggestions! Thanks!
I also had another thought. Has anyone read any of Brent Weeks' books? The Night Angel trilogy would make a great game, and his Lightbringer books look like they will be the same. Thoughts?

It occurs to me that quite a few of these suggestions wouldn't require anything so drastic as a complete rulesset, just unit rules, lists and some thematic modifications to established rules.
Modifying, for instance, Kings of War's rules, to represent Michael Moorcock's or David Gemmel's universes would be a doddle, and methinks rather good fun.

For large-scale fantasy settings, I'd like to see Raymond Feist's world of Midkemia realized into a TT game.
I absolutely love the ideas of either American Gods or Night Watch as a skirmish game.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

Even though Chris Roberts created it, William Forstchen and others made it into some of the best novels out there, so Wing Commander. Withs it's tons of Terran Confederation and Kilrathi fighters and cap ships, add in the Nepehilim, and other factions like the Border Worlds and the Landreich and you got an amazing potential for a game that would blow BFG out of the water, as fighters, bombers and carriers would actually have major purposes.
It'd also be nice to paint up some Hellcats and Dralthi fighters.

Although a movie foremost, reccent graphic novels sorta placed it in the book section as well.
Based on that, I always wanted a Skirmish or Warhammer Quest style game based on the Labyrinth. Players play characters either based on mortals trapped in the Labyrinth trying to get out via the Goblin city, or generally adventuring with in it.
On a skirmish front you could access factions based around Goblins, rag tag groups (much like the one Sarah ends up with) the Fire Gang, and various other weird denizens of the Labyrinth.
Other than that, something based around the World of Darkness would be good. Werewolf packs, either tribe based or pack, Vampires in coeteries or Clan based, perhaps a mix. Also Wyrm minions with Black Spiral Dancers, Pentex and/or Banes, could have them mixed/seperate. Plus Witch Hunters, Police Force for those who like to take on the underdog, Mages etc.
Probably work best as a Skirmish game, but that would be something I could really get my teeth into.

War and Peace! Oh wait....
For real though, Maelstrom808 already mentioned it, but you could do some sweet fantasy battles in Feist's Midkemia universe. Traditional medieval infantry and heavy cavalry from Midkemia vs. lacquered-armored Tsurani or Pentathians or what have you. A lot of options there.

OK, my turn. my GSV launches 10 'Gangster' class ROUs, each of which has a half dozen drones that Displace over and start disabling your crew. If you manage to kill any of the ROU ships you only get half VPs as they've fully backed up their mind-state. I get sixty dice, 56 hits, so that's eleven ships uncrewed. Now for some gridfire from the GSV itself and the rest of your fleet is now debris."
