I got an army case and a rhino and commander + command squad for 10$. The command squad was painted with obnoxius hues of lime green and purple, most of the shoulder pads were backwards, most of the guys were melted because so much glue, and they are assembled terribly. Same goes for the commander. The rhino is pretty much the same, but I won't post pictures because you're eyes will BLEED. The army case is cool though

I don't have any pictures, but I bought a metal Necron Deciever from ebay for converting into a Laughing God.
The pictures looked like it was a bit poorly painted - pretty much just slapped on huge amounts of gold.
It arrived and I take it out of the box doesnt look like GW paint, though it could have just been old thick paint - either way there was a good 1-2mm layer of gunk over it, so I rip off the base and drop it into a tub of dettol.
When I remember it a couple of days later, I pull it out, scrub off as much paint as I could - turns out its been stuck together with no more nails or an epoxy resin. In giant globs.

Ok,
So i started off with these guys, 28 of them on ebay for £18...bargain. These photos dont do them justice, the kid, bless his soul, had glued half the legs on back to front, put little nodules at the front of every base which are easy enough clipped off. These photos dont do them justice but trust me there were like 8 layers under this, i used dettol to strip them and found reds, greens, blues...allsorts. Someone had tried to spray them white and ink them brown...why?
Some were missing jaws...HOW!?!
Long story short. chopping, stripping, greenstuffing, splicing and some brain surgery later... 28 = 20. The 'Unique' poses are kind of growing on me too!
Wouldve taken more photos of the originals had i known about this thread!

LOL Excellent!
Guess it's true, not all geneseed is created equal. The Space Marines of the Emperor's Derp chapter make that quite clear...
This is all quite terrifying as I intend my next army to be 80%+ e-bay salvage.

I think it's just paint, lots and lots of paint... and plastic glue.
Here are a couple more from the Emperors Derp ( LOL) Chapter. The one on the right I stripped using biostrip... It came out pretty clean. Unfortunately the twin linked bolters might be slightly misaligned...
Some of the bolters also seem to have been randomly replaced with 2nd edition infantry bolters which obviously aren't designed to fit. I was planning to restore these, but they are such fine examples of miniatures gone bad, almost seems a shame to destroy them. Emperors Derp has kind of a good ring to it. Maybe I should keep them as the basis for an awesome troll army.

Wasn't ebay, but on a danish Warhammer forum..
Bought 3 Chaos Rhino's, and the picture turned out to hide half the truth. They were equipped with all the extra bitz, spikes, dragon/daemon heads instead of exhausts etc. - and this had been done with an overwhelming amount of glue. It kind of disheartened me, and I havent gotten around to fix them up yet.
There were used so much glue, that when i got a khorne mark pulled off of the side of it, you could still see a khorne icon, only it was made of glue.

Well this morning I received an Ork Deff Dread I won on ebay the other day. The picture was pretty small but it looked ok and with most of the unused bitz it was a damn good bargain at £11!
I knew the arms were glued on (2 CCW & 2 RL's) but planned on pulling them off and magnetising them...... but it's NEVER as easy as you hoped.
Looking at the model the arms are glued on with what looks like Poly AND superglue! As if thats not annoying enough the sheer amount of glue used was astonishing, creating an atleast 2mm layer encrusting the entire the arm joints to hold them place; it had also run down the side of the model into alot of the small detail. Not only that but the shoulder armour that should have been glued (by the plastic tab) to the hangover just above the socket joints was actually glued the wrong way round and directly onto the hangover, again, with a super strong bond, forcing me to have to cut the entire shoulder off. Last but not least (well, with the exception of a thick, crappy paintjob) the bottom of the RL's were also glued to the legs!!
I really struggle to understand how people can do such a bad job on models, especially ones that cost so much BNiB. Still, although nowhere near as much now, I still think it was a bargain, I'm just gonna have to buy, and use, a little plasticard to replace some of the armour I had to cut up and hide the cut joins and glue lumps on the Dread.

WARLBORG!!!! I SWEAR I had stuff from the same source as you did. Mine was a "converted SM", slathered with about 20ml of plastic glue, and showing the same color pattern as on your second-hands. I dont know HOW it was possible, but he had a bow-legged posture, like he was riding something, not a bike, and he had a CSM tank panel glued on as if it were a shield. It was an abject disaster (it was only a nugget in a random bag of random I'd won.

I've gotten a lot off ebay and have yet to run into anything REALLY bad. The worse so far is an older Ultramarine Captain that had at least 8 layers of paint and some vet sergeants that had ungodly thick gobbed paint on them. Both of which I knew how bad they were from the photos before I got them, but hey they were cheap.
I really think I am my own worse enemy. More specifically my 15 year old past self. I really want to punch that bastard in the kisser.
Case in point is my good friend's Eldar that I'm repainting for him to try and get him back in the hobby. I'm not sure which of us painted these bad boys back in the 90s but I cringed when I opened that shoebox...
The one on the left is the new repainted one.

If you are stripping a metal/pewter figure then there is nothing better than MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone). It's the big daddy of acetone, bascially.
It's incredibly noxious stuff, so it has to be used in a well ventilated area WITH a mask as well. Try not to get any on your skin.
I dunked a metal figure into this stuff and, quite literally, the paint immediately flaked off.
Don't use this stuff for plastics, it will melt it.

Not to make excuses, but if you'd seen what I was painting 20 years ago, it was that bad or maybe a little worse. We all have to start somewhere. I don't know about anyone else but when I first started painting, I sucked. Badly.
That having been said, I never tried to sell that crap to anyone. I was too ashamed. Some of these abominations look nice in comparison.

I I can back this up it meaks great poly cement as well for plastic models just use an old brush dip it in wipe off excess and apply like any other poly cement. Works a treat.

The one on the right pretty much somes up child-me's painting skills, including fluorescent rods that had glue all over them and had turned black, or the arms weren't glued into the sockets at all. Glad I didn't sell my crons on ebay, although it's taking me a while to strip them as the dettol still leaves big chunks behind so I have to dip them repeatedly.

I just got this in from Ebay today and it made me think of this thread. It's pretty much what I assumed it would be, only... just... Wow...
Seeing it in person is so much more daunting than little low resolution images on the internets...
This was apparently part way converted into a redeemer...
And these poor dreads....
There's also a squad of "converted sniper scouts" as well as a whirlwind...
Even though it's going to be a lot of work reviving these poor models it was still such a great deal...
