I vote for Slaanesh Marines vs Eldar. An old hatred that would be in a starter set.

I'd like to see Imperial Guard vs somebody (Eldar? Chaos?) in order to influence some players in another direction than Space Marines, but like the man said, who are we kidding? It's going to be Space Marines vs one of the upcoming non-Imperial codex books' armies.

They're dudes and they have gasmasks, but their similarities are pretty superficial. Krieg is modeled after WW1 French while the Steel Legion are modeled after WWII German paratroopers. They're distinct enough, both fluffwise and modelwise to do well. Besides, with a plastic redesign they could definitely get some new details or motifs that distinguish them further.
We know that because we are history buffs. To the average consumer they are guys with gasmasks and trenchcoats. They are essentially interchangeable from a marketing perspective.

Remember, GW has to consider selling to the lowest common denominator, not to niche markets.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Oh god just the thought that they put Grey Knights in the starter pack better! Grey Knights versus just Longfangs? Dreadknights and Longfangs vs. deepstriking Landraiders with Mephiston? Just going through stuff people here would surely love

On the serious side, I guess it will need at least one loyal Marine army to feel accessible enough in the eyes of GW. So I place my bet on marines vs. what ever they want to sell more

nah...they already did nids in 4th ed. Chaos vs Loyalists? I don't think there has been a starter set between them, and they are meant to be sworn enemies.
Also, it will be a good day for chaos players. Just some converting, and they have an instant 600-750pt army.

People at my FLGS were saying that we'd like Eldar/chaos. Chaos seems to be at least one side that most people agree on, so I wouldn't mind that set at all.

Currently the rumour is Dark Angles vs Chaos, not Chaos Space Marines. Harry gave a hint about plastic cultists and a plastic Chaos dreadnought being in the box. Someone else a while back mentioned plastic plaguebearers.

Any starter set that provides the value that AOBR did, when it first came out, would be about as ideal as can be.

I'm hoping the Rumors of CSM in the Starter box are true. If the Dex is good, I may pick up a few!

Space Marines will always be in the starter sets no matter what people want. I now they have been for the past two, but I don't know about the previous ones. I would like to see CSM vs. Necrons just to have something different.
But i would be really happy if they used CSM and Nids (since I play both armies!)
They should just have a survey of the most played armies or something on the GW site, and make a starter set with the two most played armies. That would be my way of choosing.

More likely that it would be the two least played armies in an attempt to increase sales.

It would be SM VS Other Variant of SM then! lol.

I'm pretty set for models in my current Armies (Except ones that arn't released yet..) So, I kind of have the opposite feelings in the sense that the starter box seems to be a great way to start a new Army, or expand one that isn't filled to the brim already.

At least, that's how I feel.

I'm pretty sure the rumor is Dark Angles and Not Just Chaos Space Marines "Chaos Army".

This I would like. For once put the Imperial hordes against their better.... let the common man die(or 'submit') to the will of Slaanesh....

Actually for my next 40K army, I was thinking I might do Chaos Marines anyway(I have Xenos, and Marines), so this would be a good set for me!

Not if a certain Tactical Genius has anything to say about it!

I would actually really enjoy this as a starter set and that would be a really interesting way to take the story, would really start out Sixth Edition with a Bang! Could blast Bolt Thrower's "Last Stand of Humanity" in the background too.

Marines are a certainty and as much as people would like otherwise, they will be in the box.

A sensible opponent would be Tau. They are in need of an update, they haven't appeared in a starter box before and would be good to draw in a younger audience because of the OMG KOOL ROBOTZ!!! factor.
