Oooor perhaps your character doesn't know and will find out later in the game.

Are you trying to imply that perhaps a story isn't told all at once at the beginning, and that it may unfurl over a period of time? Next you will tell me you don't start the game with all the combos and spells.

What? Don't be absurd. That would mean I'd actually have to put in some effort and somehow make my character stronger by doing various in game actions. Like finding some guys lost child or collecting some tribal totems from the natives!

Are you suggesting I'll level up if I bring you 5 wolf paws? But only the ones you want which means I'll probably have to killed about 20 wolves?

Then why not have him say "I don't know what I just did", or "What the hell? How did I do that?!"

No. "I just did it".

Edit - I guess I'm just spoiled by more believable story telling, like for example White Wolfs Hunter: the Reckoning (the pen and paper). When one of the classes you can play as grabs a piece of rebar off the ground in order to fend off whatever horror it is, only to have it catch on fire, they don't just say "I just did it". That's stupid. They act realistically, usually by freaking out.

There is little to no difference between those statements. "I just did it" implies that you don't really know how.

There's a difference between "I just...did it" and "I just did it". The pause means something. Just flat out saying that you did something sounds to me like it's not a big deal.

"Holy crap you just picked up a truck! How did you do that???"
"I just did it"

I can almost imagine him shrugging while saying that, as if it's not a big deal. Especially when he creates an ethereal weapon in his hands, the proceeds to kill the crap out of that troll.

Edit - Meant to say they could have added the pause, and the whole situation wouldn't have stuck out to me at all.

So the story is garbage because one errant ellipsis managed to escape the game's script? I've seen gamers nitpick before... but man this certainly takes the cake! Also maybe fate-smashing or whatever that mechanic is called is no biggie for your character, or maybe we'll find out more as we play the game.

What can I say, you go around touting about how your story is so great because someone like salvatore is behind it, then these things stick out to me. Sort of like how if you say you're the best at something, people scrutinize more.

I'm a fan of resident evil, I KNOW what bad storytelling is. That doesn't totally ruin a game for me.

Once again I'm putting emphasis on how I'm told that the game has a great story to get immersed into, yet all I'm getting is the hero who says "meh"

Or maybe the writing is just crap but the kicker is you'll probably have to fork up $60 to find out

EDIT: TO clarify I don't think they've claimed RA wrote the story. They've claimed he wrote the lore and built the universe, which is different from producing the story's script.

Oh those sneaky bastards. Make a confusing demo, only way for things to make sense is to buy the game.

Think you're right about Salvatore. Looks like he's the creative director. While he's not responsible for everything I don't think I keep seeing bits implying he's responsible for most of it.

The developers (Big Huge Games) have gone on record as not wanting to release the demo but that the publisher (EA) went ahead anyway. BHG went on to say they were generally pleased with he reaction to the demo, even though the early build issues (like the crashing) might have turned some people away.

That REALLY turned me off the game.

Normally I wouldn't mind, but they are talking about how they have Salvatore and Mcfarlene and some random guy who made oblivion making this MASTERPIECE, yet I'm greeted with a cop out not but 15 minutes in.

It's designed to be that you, as the PC REALLY do not know HOW you did that.. My guess is, is that throughout the story, you figure out how it works, and better how to control it.

To draw a parallel.

When I was 14 I got my first TFL. I didn't stop and marvel at it, I went on, and marveled at it on film later.

You could say that I expected to get a TFL, because other people have gotten TFLs, but in the world of Amalur other people use magic.

Its a "Whoa!" moment after the fact, not during.

This probably a stupid question but what's a TFL?

I don't remember that part off the top of my head, was it dialogue or or just text? It may be the line reading that is bothering and not the writing.

I haven't played the demo. I'll probably get the game in one of those wonderful Steam sales

I'm just saying that the writing could be crap. At the time I posted that no one had played the full game so we don't really know.

Been playing the game so far, and really enjoying it. Probably would have been a bit better on the Xbox, but after getting used to the Mouse Camera, it's not so bad.

Storyline so far has been pretty good, but I've mostly been doing sidequests. I really like the look of the Monsters. It has a very Wowish feel to them, but they look great.

I'll keep this thread updated as I go through it.

So just did the demo... Loved it.

So, what's you guys fav weapon so far? And what kind of character you aiming for?

I'm probably going for jack of all trades, cause I love the longsword for regular combat, daggers for backstabbyness, and well spellcasting rocks.

Though I might cut out the middle man and leave daggers alone. Though I haven't seen anything that stands up to backstabbing when it comes to fun kills... fate kills not withstanding. Though I did already pull of an insane combo with the great sword.... Whirlwind > hit into air > lightning to the arse.

I've been going straight-up rogue on my first character. I'm using faeblades (which do stupid amounts of damage ) and some nifty fire chakrams (which also do stupid amounts of damage). I've really been loving how dynamic the combat is as opposed to most standard RPGs - I'm constantly rolling out of the way to avoid attacks and swapping weapons to deal with threats at different ranges. They did a damned fine job putting this game together.

Oh, and I too have been doing nothing but sidequests. Crikey, there are a lot of them. I've sunk over 5 hours into the game already, and I've got about 15 done with another 15 to be done. And still sitting on about the third main quest.

Here is one problem, when playing the game last night, I have with the game. It's too easy to dodge in this game! Just let my attacks rip into them until they begin their attacks and just hit a direction + space bar and continue.

But, beyond the action, I mainly play these types of games to see whats next.

Dodging is nice, but unless you have the twitch reflexes of a seven-year old, getting surrounded by enemies can still be a death sentence. Especially with the wonky camera and not being able to see when off-screen enemies make attacks. I actually love it in some way, because combat seems really frantic and chaotic at times, rather than just calmly dispatching enemies one at a time.

I would think at that point playing any game for a challenge would be pointless. All that is left is to play for the pretty colors.

Tackle for loss. Its what happens when a defensive player in American football tackles the ball carrier behind the line of scrimmage, so long as it isn't the quarterback.

Played a bit of this game, its really not very good, the combat is stiff and the graphics are kinda lacking, it almost looks like that Conan game that came out a while back and the fight style is similar.

Skyrim just seems better in so many ways, which sucks because I was hoping for something good out of this game with all the hype it had.
