JonST wrote:Played a bit of this game, its really not very good, the combat is stiff and the graphics are kinda lacking, it almost looks like that Conan game that came out a while back and the fight style is similar.
Skyrim just seems better in so many ways, which sucks because I was hoping for something good out of this game with all the hype it had.
Are you sure your not mixing the two up? Skyrim's combat is made of bricks compared to KOATR. As for graphics, honestly prefer the style too, I'm not with the realism crowd.

It's really a preference thing. I, for one, prefer WoW's cartoonish style, and thus I really like the graphics of this game. It really kind of harkens back to the days when my computer couldn't even remotely run any of the ultra-realistic games.
And yeah, how is this game's combat stiffer than Skyrim? Skyrim had almost nothing in the way of smooth combat - no dodging, no switching weapons on the fly (with one button, no less) and no variation in attacks. Kingdoms has all of those.

I never said skyrims combat wasnt stiff lol, I just found the one button walk and chop of Reckoning to not give much in the way of options and I like to have more of a variety than that. From what I played of Reckoning there are usually alot less ways to go about things than there are in Skyrim, that said I did only play a small portion of reckoning, and some people prefer that kind of game.
I also prefer the realism, maybe thats why it didnt click with me.

Well combat isn't just mashing buttons. For proper combo's you need timed button presses, and hell, you can easily combo using 3 different weapons (main, secondary+spell).

So you didn't start the game with all the combo options turned on? No wonder it seemed limited. It is almost like you were playing a level 1 character. I remember when I turned on Skyrim and was freezing time, breathing fire, and wielding enchanted weapons right after I made my character.
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.
I don't feel the Amalur-Skyrim comparison is fair to either game. They aren't trying to accomplish the same thing, and while they have similar genre trappings Skyrim is, at its heart, a fantasy world simulator whereas Amalur is a full-tilt action game. Skyrim brings just enough combat to satisfy the needs of its world, while Amalur brings just enough world to satisfy the needs of its combat system. Neither approach is inherently right or wrong, merely different.
So that all said, I am really enjoying Amalur. Didn't have as much time to play it last night as I would have liked (had an M:TG sealed event lined up), but the game's progression seems to have a lot of promise. Getting a copy of the pre-order weapons pack was also nice, because it gave me a chance to see all of the game's various weapon types at work. Chakrams seem to have the potential to be a satisfying homage to Kratos' Blades of Chaos.
I am just waiting for it to go on sale on steam. TBH, it's partially because even the PC version is priced 60 bucks, and I'm not paying over fifty for a PC game.
It's also because frankly I can't afford it anyway.

Skyrim's combat is garbage, and this is after 100+ hours of it.
You can't just mash once you get out of the beginner area, at least, unless you are playing on easy.
walk and chop, rofl.

They definitely punish you if you do get hit in combat, especially when facing multiple enemies. wolves and the like can be brutal if you miss a block of dodge.. Note, I am playing a pure warrior who prefers to wield a Greatsword (he even has the handlebar mustache to go with it)
Pretty much been using all of my time off lately to play this. I've pretty much explored most of the left continent. I've also completed three of the Factions set of quests as well. The House of Ballads and the Warsworn quests were really awesome. The Travelers were ok. It didn't have that epic feel the other two did.
Faeblades +Chakrams are a great combo. Causing all that AOE damage with the Chakrams works REALLY well with the Finesse tree, since it poisons and causes them to bleed.
I'm planning on doing either pure sorcery or the sorcery / finesse tree. Teleporting in combat wheeeeee

Currently still using all three, but might be switching soon. My daggers aren't worth the points really, since my longsword out damages them anyway. The only reason I ever use my daggers is against single targets, for 10+ hit air juggles

I've gone mostly finesse, and use Faeblades. The real thing that shines in that tree is all the passives and sustained abilities you get. I do so much damage, so quickly it's amazing. It also goes VERY well with Chakrams, for their AoE. Poisoning and causing a massive group to bleed is great. When the corpses start exploding from the poison, it's just icing on the cake.
I also make heavy use of Shadowflare. That ability has saved me so many times, and really does a number on the bigger creatures like Ettin/Jottun/Bolguns.

Shadowflare does stupid, stupid amounts of damage. I've found that even at an equal level, it'll knock out the Jottun Runewarders (or whatever they're called) in one shot at point blank range.
I just have to say that my mind is just boggled by the amount of content in this game. I've played the game for twelve hours now, and I've gotten around 30 sidequests finished with only 2 or 3 of the main line done. And looking at the world map, there's still a long, long way to go.

I started playing last night (pre-order arrived a day early ) but only got about 2 hours of play time. At a first glance I'm impressed, its the first real RPG I've played so is taking me a while to get my head around all the character development ect, but I'm loving the combat system and I'm slowly getting to grips with wtf is going on
I'm going to aim for a Mage/Rogue I think, just because some of the stealth kills look awesome, and setting stuff on fire is fun
Played a bit today, seems suprsingly Diablo-esque without being a clone, due to the combat of course. It scratches my loot itch for sure. Whether or not the story and world is engaging remains to be seen, though I'm suprised at how much I'm enjoying the artstyle which I was sure I would hate.
Anyone know what weapon I should pair up with a longsword? I'm doing an even split between might and sorcery; I'm trying to decide between greatswords, staffs, or sceptres.
Also Boggarts are so adorable, especially when they chase around butterflies and start mumbling. Makes me sad to kill em :(
