Subject: Diablo 3, Which class will you play first?
Shrike325 wrote:I feel kind of bad, only because I'm really really tempted to skip this. None of the classes excite me (and, for some reason, I envision WoW clones which are clones of D2 characters) and game play looks identical to D2 (which was identical to D1). I just feel like it's going to be SC2 for me again.
The main difference in the scenarios is that between D2 and D3, nothing has come along that improved upon the formula. Other games following the formula since then haven't added anything terribly new or really necessary.
The reason SC2 was such a disappointment for me was that it ignored the improvements of the RTS genre other companies had done and was thus such a direct clone of the first it felt like it was outdated upon release.
New graphics, engine, weapons, abilities and story aren't enough?
I wish I could ask that much of some modern games these days.
If SC2 had changed to the modern RTS formula (I assume by that you mean using squads, regenerative renewable resources and having faster gameplay) it wouldn't be nearly as tactical and wouldn't live up to its die hard fans expectations.
Change a game too much and you're going to insult as many, if not more people, than you're going to please.
No, honestly, it WASN'T enough. The game played exactly the same as the original, and after years of RTS games that weren't SC, it felt lackluster, dull, and made me wonder why it took them so long to put out a game that was just, to me, a shinier version of the old one(and yes, I do honestly know how much work they put into games from the ground up, I wonder why they built it that way for something that's so almost exact to the original). I honestly got bored playing it because there was no innovation.
Honestly, while I'm looking forward to D3, I'm a little worried, because Blizzard seems stuck in a rut created by their own success where they keep retreading the same thing over and over. They're like the Seth Macfarlane of video games.
I did 2 campaign missions, never touched it again. That's how boring it was to me. It was as big a change to SC1 as Halo anniversary was to halo combat evolved.

I'm in the beta and the Demon Hunter is my current favorite. I have to say running into a room of monsters with the Barbarian, swinging a giant axe, and sending them flying (yes, the physics engine tosses the baddies when you hit them) is really cool. The Wizard has great AOE effects which are also lots of fun. I haven't done anything with the Witch Doctor or the Monk yet, but they're next!

Which is exactly what I want.
And it has co-op.
Exactly what I want.

Indeed. D2 is still one of my fave online games to play with friends.

I was just told my first girlfriend plays it, and she never told me. Not becuase she didn't want me to know, but because she didn't think it was important. So I'm trying to see whats up in the game.
Any half-demonic people running around?
I've never feared Death or Dying. I've only feared never Trying.
Why is the barb so popular? Bunch of uncouth savages up in here! I for one will be using my brain and roll a wizard and maybe a monk alt at some point.

From what you guys have seen, would a Witch Doctor or a Monk be better with a Deamon Hunter?
Slarg, I am definitely leaning towards a Monk in this situation, as Demonhunter is a rane dedicated class, and a Witch Doctor is a [I dont have an official word for it but I know there is one, is it Passive???...anyway!] backseat class that isnt suited as well to direct combat, not to say it isnt a powerhouse. A monk would add the much needed Melee part of what would be your two person group, not to mention Monk and DH are the most mobile of the classes, you would both be a very quick pair indeed.
Ugh, I wish they had just kept it as necromancer. "Witch Doctor" annoys the hell out of me >.<

It's like if they started calling "wizard" somthing equally silly like "court jester".

Why? Witch Doctors have been around as magic classes in RPG's for quite a while. And I've always loved the crazy buggers. The combination of spirit magics and alchemy always hit the spot for me.
Necromancer on the other hand is just blandy undead master for me.

I can, but that's because the term doesn't mean what people think it means(it actually refers to a person who protects people from witches and heals afflictions caused by said witches using natural remedies NOT magic). Incidentally, Soladrin, Witch Doctors also have nothing to do with Voodoo, they show up in any and every culture that believes in witches, even Europe in the middle ages.
It's also why I agree that the Witch Doctor should have been named something else like Shaman, Bokor(Voodoo sorceror or priest, which is also what people are actually thinking of when they think Witch Doctor, they're just ignorant of the proper name), or something that traditionally actually uses magic.

I associate "witch doctor" with "quack/medicine man/snake oil salesman", myself...

That usage is an extension of the incorrect belief that Witch Doctors were witches that healed, ie. a faith healer.
Which, of course came about because Europeans didn't get it when they came across small African villages.
Real Witch Doctors(which still exist in Africa) essentially do homeopathic medicines for afflictions/illnesses that tribes believe are caused by witches amongst them, who are exiled to a witch village once found(they then often make a living making and selling beer to the villagers).
