Probably the orks eventually grow into a single WAAAGH!, the tyranids arrive in force, the necrons fully awaken, the Eldar create Ynnead, the Missing primarchs come home, the star child is born, the 14th black crusade is launched and...the tau are kinda ignored for a while and then become a medium strength faction.
Their apotheosis is less legendary

There's quite a difference between 10,000 years and a few days with Jesus
And I don't think so, I think it's more so that their entire system of warp travel (astronomican) and method of creating astropaths don't need to be retconned, and so that SoB can do acts of faith, and so that Guardsmen/astartes have something to yell.

@totentanzen Sorry you are upset a little mate but we're not actually discussing religion merely pointing out some of the parallels that exist between 40k and Christianity. Let's face it there are numerous references to religion and the church throughout 40k and an analysis of the lore of 40k has trouble staying off religion to a certain extent.
As for the whole Emperor = God thing well the one major contribution that the institutions of religion have in common is HOPE. Hope of salvation, hope of an end to suffering. These are the analogies that are drawn about the Emperor all the time.
That was what I was meaning when I said it worked for the church, and I mean all churches regardless of religion. Churches can lead and inspire people like no other, all on the basis of hope. People will fight much harder for something they don't have, or might have, rather than something they already have.
So that is why I say the Imperial Guard would be stronger without the Emperor than with. They fight on in his name to keep his memory alive now that he is gone. Much like the devout who still follow the teaching of Jesus as they know one day they will be granted salvation.
But as we are perhaps pushing the limits of the forum rules and some of our mates may not like the direction the thread is taking maybe it is best to leave it at that for this line of thought ?
I actually think the whole crossdressing Khorne thing is actually the most likely out come at the end of 40k, either that or the Tyranids eat everybody then turn on each other leave one very lonely, very overweight Hive Tyrant.

More an even more poorly cloaked paralled with King Arthur, with the primarchs being his knights, and the fallen being the ones that followed Horus (Mordred)
Even down to the two of them meeting and fightng in the final battle, with Horus mortally wounding the Emperor, his father, and then being killed by him.
Mordred mortally wounded Arthur, his father, before being killed by him.
The Emperor was taken up after the battle and his life-force sustained in the golden throne
Arthur was taken up after the battle and his life force sustained by the Lady of the lake and her sisters/handmaidens (accounts vary)
Just saying, the Bible isn't the ONLY source of cool myth etc, and in 40K's case it's likely not the most major influence

I like your addition with the Sisters of Battle at the end, I'm sure my dad (who plays them) would love to hear that..
I imagine the Emperor dying, ascending to some higher existence and taking all the Space Marines, Sisters of Battle, all the Psykers and also a few Imperial Guard, like Creed and Yarrick etc. I suppose then there would be a rather peaceful Empire of humanity that coexists with the Tau and Eldar. Chaos would be wiped out, along with the Hive Minds of the Tyranids and the C'tan and their Necron slaves.
Basically I imagine it ending in all fluffy flowers and all that sappy crap, not exactly the most thrilling continuation, but it would definitely end in one Hell of a climactic battle!

Yeh fair enough, I see the King Arthur connection very well.
I guess I have just been heading down the church track eve since I realised my Grey Knights are wearing Morification Straps on their legs.
Of course it is supposed to be mortification of the flesh, not power armour, but I guess it's the thought that counts.

Pretty much all of the 40k races have failed at some level, except the Tau, but that's only because they are young and naive.
Only man seems to have the potential to be redeemed, and that only by the Illuminati and the Sensei-Emperor.
My take, anyway.

Orks failed? News to me. They're thriving.
Nids likewise. We're only seeing the tip of the iceberg.
Chaos likewise, and we're fethed if the wall between the warp and reality goes down.
Humanity are the biggest faliures of the lot IMO, as they had it all and continue to throw it all away, rather than change. The IOM is slowly crumbling under the weight of it's own inefficiency, and hoping for a bit of retconned 2nd ed fluff to save it
At least the Eldar realise that they fethed up, and are going out with a little dignity.
( DE are thriving post-fall, but not anywhere near back to Old Eldar standards. They are growing.

The Emperor sacrifices his humanity to become a chaos god of unity and unites the other chaos gods. Humans gain free and safe warp travel and safety from daemons. Necrons crushed by Tide of chaos, Eldar and their panthion enslaved, and Tau exterminated.
Orks enslaved to Khorne and Tyranids hunted for sport. Humanity expands to new galaxies and the Imperium becomes invincible.
(seriously, can anyone see Tzeench coming up with this?)

That seems to remind me of something, not sure what though..
I quite like that take though; is that suggestion that mankind as a whole is unified with the Chaos God's though?
I get the impression Gork and Mork would go into a bloody duel against Khorne, ending in the mutual destruction of all three. I reckon Nurgle finally gets killed by the Eldar (maybe Khaine) whilst trying to free the Eldar God of beauty (I think that's her... Something along those lines). Slaanesh DEFINITELY dies because I hate Slaanesh and everything to do with it!
I'm a little unsure about Tzneetch, if Chaos was to emerge the victors, I think Tzneetch would DEFINITELY be the mastermind, and survive all the bloody destruction. If Chaos is to be eradicated, then I guess the Emperor goes and sends their asses to..... Non-existence? What even happens to a God when it's destroyed? Humans appear to go to Heaven or something (with the Emperor), so what about the Gods?

How would 2 gods specifically stated as being able to shrug off the attacks of other gods with a laugh be mutua-gibbed by one god that can't hurt them enough to defeat them. They are stated as being so strong they can never be defeated.
I can see Isha shivving Nurgle in his sleep, and making a getaway from her taste-tester duties, but Nurgle would have to..sleep..first Khaine would have to reunite from his many avatars to become and actual God again. Ynead maybe
The only way Tzeentch would be completely defeated is if he wanted to
You are also assuming the Emperor could actually roflstomp them on their own plane. Even if he was a newborn God, with power drawn from all humanity, i doubt he could take a gangbang from all four chaos powers, especially since they also draw their power from all humanity
