I've been reading around the history of all the races in 40k, especially around the Space Marines, and obviously there are a lot of 'prophesies' about the return of the Primarchs, also there's a rather ambiguous section about the Emperor's Golden Throne failing because there is no longer the technology to repair it. The Eldar have their prophesies about the Final Battle and what not, with all the Phoenix Lords dying. And the Tau have their constant conquest towards the Greater Good.
So this got me to thinking, would Games Workshop ever create a definite ending to the 40k Universe; will mankind rise again? Will the Chaos God's begin their reign? Will the Tyranids/ Necrons enter into an eternal process of feeding off of worlds and their energy?
I guess they wouldn't, because I imagine that it would probably discourage some players from continuing. But I'm still interested to how it could possibly end, the fictional universe is so immense and full of engaging characters I'd love to see it developed further, so my question is, how do YOU think Warhammer 40k WOULD and SHOULD end?
Well, if GW was going out of business and decided to wrap it up, I'd guess:
It WOULD end with the Emperor coming back to life, Ynnead killing Slaanesh and the Emperor killing the other three gods as well as Gork and Mork, obliterating every Ork in the galaxy because of the psychic backlash. He would then mind crush the Hive Mind, killing the Tyranids, banish the C'tan to the Warp, and force the Necrons and Tau to bow to the supremacy of humanity. The last traces of the Dark Eldar and Chaos worshippers would then be wiped out and everyone would live happily ever after. Except if they let Matt Ward write it, in which case, the Emperor dies, but Draigo and Calgar brofist with such intensity that it achieves the same results.
For an unfinished and highly Chaos-centred view of how it should end, click.
Spoiler:
How it SHOULD end on the other hand is somewhat more difficult. I'd personally go with something along the lines of: The Emperor dies. The High Lords of Terra fail to act in time, and the world is swamped with daemons. For a full year, the Astronomicon shudders violently out of control without the guiding force of the Emperor's psychic presence. In this time, Cadia finally falls to the Chaos Marines, who now have a distinct advantage in travel thanks to the favour of the gods. Realising this, Abaddon travels to Terra to make certain of the Emperor's demise before first firing the Planet Killer at Titan, then leading the Dark Mechanicus to Mars where technologies sealed since the Heresy are unleashed after a brief and brutal war. The few marine chapters foolish enough to risk warp travel in an attempt to prevent this are decimated or possessed without exception. Those close enough and with enough influence flee to areas protected by Marine chapters, and recruitment skyrockets as safety procedures are often overlooked to combat the threat that they know must be coming.
Hundreds of Chaos Marines die at the hands of some unknown, terrible machine after they slay a mad woman at the centre of a labyrinth. Only by sacrificing thousands of slaves to wreath the planet in a warp storm is the machine halted, without a single daemon being summoned.
Without the presence of the Emperor entrancing the Hive Mind, the Tyranid fleets lay siege to all planets around them, their movement halted briefly. The Tau and Ultramarines come to an alliance of necessity as both Kraken and Behemoth concentrate their might on them. Perhaps responding to the Emperor's death, the Eldar cast their lives away in order to shatter Leviathan beyond repair, dying to a man in the process. As a new Warp entity stirs, Slaanesh, overflowing with power thanks to the atrocities committed by its legion spilling from the Eye, shatters it immediately, perhaps fearing what would happen should the being attain full strength. The god's death tears a new hole in reality at the edge of Segmentum Solar, rendering Leviathan truly destroyed.
The siege of the Ultramarines would not be a unique case, sadly. The Thousand Sons cover Fenris with Warp storms as powerful as those unleashed by Ahriman in his Rubric, declaring it just that the Space Wolves would be forced to share in the fate that they condemned the Thousand Sons to. Baal is quickly assaulted by a horde of Orks from Vacuna. Though the chapter fights as only the sons of Sanguinius can, a world infested by Orks is doomed to remain that way forever. The Emperor's Children assault Medusa repeatedly, seemingly oblivious to the casualties inflicted on them, perhaps even revelling in it. Badab is quickly taken by Huron Blackheart, and declaring that he shall be paid in blood for the time he spent in exile, he begins assaulting world after world, followed by an ever growing army of traitors.
Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it.

No. Just, no.

A grot gets stuck in the gears of the golden throne, killing the husk of the Emprah. Ghazzy assumes his rightful place as the leader of the IoM, and gets those damn trains running on time (Kudos to those who get that reference.)

Gork n' Mork wake up 100%, unite the orks, smash everyone else in one large bloody meaty (and metallic) pulp. Then the galaxy becomes an endless war between ork klans. The end.
Nah, if GW were to write it: the Emporer dies. Starchild ensues. Chaos gods die. Gork and Mork die. Ynnead never allowed to form. Humanity then unites and second Great Crusade occurs, wiping out all alien life. Starchild then lets humanity evolve into a fully psychic race and they all live happily ever after.
The End.

No,
It would end them, and 40k. They MIGHT progress it slightly in 6ed, but they won't END it. Or there would no longer be battle to fight.

It would kinda defeat the point in the game as a whole.

Waaagh! Gorskar = 2050pts
Iron Warriors VII Company = 1850pts
Fjälnir Ironfist's Great Company = 1800pts
Guflag's Mercenary Ogres = 2000pts
Since the fluff is absolutely explicit that Gork and Mork are too powerful to be killed and that the Emperor is afraid of them, i'd say that they manifest, play pool with planets (kudos to anyone who gets that reference ) and pot Terra into the eye of terror, after a full sixpack of wicked-strength Lager
The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts

I really need to stop reading Dakka while brushing my teeth.

Older but never contradicted fluff from Titan Legions (i think? .. one of the Epic books anyway) had the emperor opening his eyes in fear when Gork and Mork awoke.
The current ork codex has this to say about Gork and Mork:
'Gork and Mork are divine powerhouses, deities so strong that they are never truly defeated. They simply shrug off the attacks of the other gods with a raucous laugh."
Gork and Mork could own any of the other gods, IMO, Stellar-baby or no

The storyline of 40k will never get a definitive closing. The product itself will likely end whenever GW goes bankrupt/out of business and the setting by that point will just be left in limbo.
And f it truly need to be ended one day...I doubt that GW will let the Emperor and Imperium be defeated by anyone.

Thanks all for the responses, some funny answers from Ork and Tyranid players, as I would expect.
I wasn't really sure how I'd want it to end, I suppose my ultimate loyalty remains to the Imperium, but I would hate to see the Eldar and Tau be destroyed as they aren't exactly evil. Some interesting lore about Gork and Mork I never knew, so thanks for that.
I suppose I'd have to agree with Durza, it sounds the most plausible. Here's to hoping GW NEVER goes bankrupt and feel the need to create an ending!
Thanks a lot for that, just finished Volume I and it's a lot better than I could have imagined. I'm especially happy to see the return of Jaghatai Khan, he was always my favourite Primarch. Now I just need to finish reading the other Volumes.
