Let's slide waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay on back to the early nineties. We're playing 1st edition. The FLGS (there was one, and only one, in the county) ran games every Saturday that were kind of "run what ya brung," which was pretty much 1st ed summed up really. I had a small force of Eldar aspect warriors, just recently introduced to the lineup. I was pretty sure that I was good.

I was familiar with the BRB. I knew damned well that if you charge an enemy unit, they get to fire at you. I also knew that I'd read the last several WDs and they were big on CC, so there must be something to that, right? And they'd just introduced aspect warriors, and I was playing Eldar...yeah, I had this down. I'd never done CC before but how bad could it be?

Turn 1: I endure a nasty amount of shooting. My Scorpions close the gap. (No vehicles back then. If you want to be close, you're slogging.)

Turn 2: I charge...and get boltered into the dirt. Game over.

That was 1992. It's now 2012. I still have those Striking Scorpions somewhere, and I'm pretty sure that they haven't been used since then. CC is obviously a bit more useful now, but I learned a valuable lesson all those years ago: if you're looking for tactics, skip WD.

Just thought of another one. Playing a friendly game my IG vs Deamons. My first game against them.

Deamons Deep Striking all over the shop things are going bad for me then the Deamons made their mistake. A foolish Greater Deamon charged a mighty Sentinal, for two turns the puny Deamon filth couldn't penetrate the sentinals mighty armour.

Then the Sentinal played it's trump card - exploding in the face of the Deamon striping it of its last wound (to my mind the pilot slotted it with a las pistol shot to the noggin before leaping from the exploding wreckage A Team style!).

The IG may have got tabled after that point... I....er....forget......?

The worst one recently was a folly of my own. I ran a squad of wraiths and a Destroyer Lord into fight a Trygon that was in combat already with some Necron Warriors.

He focused his attacks on the warriors killing a good number of them. My attacks didnt do so well because of rolling. He won combat (by a hell of a lot) and I was overrun wiping out the entire squad of wraiths and the Lord.

Playing my first game in awhile I moved my Deathwing Termies up to get closer to a blob of Sisters. I forgot about the 6 flamers in the blob, several squads, and got roasted. The story ends well, but still I can't believe I did that.

Watched a guy bring in a death company, 15 strong, power weapons and all the glitz, in from reserve. Deep strike right in front of two Ork boy mobz 30 strong each. In addition to those 60 ork boyz getting into them, a Deff Dread was right there too. That death company was put to rest. There were significant losses on the boyz, but, hey, they are orks and don't care about losses too much.

This one goes back a bit (pre current Land Raider models and using old rules 4th maybe?).

I was watching a game, and a player had put Ahriman of the Thousand Sons with command squad (approx 800 pts) in a rhino, on the edge of the table, trying to drive it up flank behind opponent's line. 1st round the opponent shot rhino and blew it up. The wreck scattered off the table... ouch. 800+ pts gone. 1 shot.

Had a buddy charge his GKGM solo into my 8-man squad of Lychguard. Took one down, got annihilated, and to add insult to injury the dead Guard got back up.

Tried to use a Monolith as moving cover against a lancespam DEldar list. Blew up on the second turn.

I tend to take gambles sometimes when I'm playing. Normally this isn't a big deal, but in a tournament you shouldn't do it.

It was the last round at a recent tournament at the FLGS. Quite a big turn out actually, and some top notch players (two of the best players in the region were there). I'd been doing pretty well for myself. 2 wins, 1 tie (man that was a fun game) and a large amount of victory points claimed for myself as well. And that's when I got cocky. I also claim fatigue. First time in over a year since I did a tournament and, well, 10-12 hours solid of W40K is tiring.

Anyways, the center of the table had a large block building we counted as impassible terrain. Just blocked line of sight terribly. Game was Space Wolves vs Space Wolves and Annihilation. I'm setup in a corner for the most part (there was a river between it and the rest of the board so my Long Fangs were relatively safe from frontal assaults there) and using the building for cover.

I have 2 Drop Pods. First one has Ragnar, a Rune Priest, and some Grey Hunters. I decide to try to use it to create a roadblock for the enemy. With troops inside.

Of course its the only time all day I scatter badly. A full 11 inches. The opposite direction of where i need them to go.

This leads to Ragnar's group being cut off from the rest of my army. It also means they have to run across the enemy's path of movement in order to get back to my army. With the Building blocking Line of Sight for my Long Fangs.

To make it worse, I made the mistake of sending another Grey Hunter pack forward to "support" them. This leads to a Kill Valley being created via Tank Shock, with Ragnar and ~18 Grey Hunters caught in it, completely cut off from my army. I handed the guy the perfect charge. Two TWC units, Wolf Guard, and Grey Hunters all charge into me while benefiting from Logan's High King ability.

In hind sight, should have used an empty pod. Would have been a much closer game then. The guy who beat me played well though, which is why he ended up in 2nd place and bumped me down to 5th or 6th (still waiting on the official standings since I haven't been to the league night recently, but couldn't have been lower than that due to other people's scores and the disparity of victory points in the top 8 players).

The worst tactical blunder is sadly my own.

Capture & Control / Spearhead... The auto tie scenario... The hardest scenario to possibly feth up.

Opponent has an IG vet squad camped on his objective and I have a full 10 strong SM tactical squad, in a Rhino camped on mine.

Bottom of the 5th, my player turn.

In a moment of complete mental disaray I moved my Rhino camping on my objective 12" away to plug a gap in terrain to keep my opponent from making any desperate gambits for my objective should the the game go into extra turns.

I forgot to disembark my tactical squad before doing so.

TBF, that wasn't a tactical mistake, just a very very unfortunate dice roll. Not that I complained...

The masses will never make any progress on ability as long as this keeps getting wrongfully stated.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Don't Wyches have Plasma Grenades standard? Regardless, going first or last and still losing to Tau in CC is shameful

...Though it's happened to me too

As for mistakes it would be when I "carefully" planned my movement and shooting against a Daemon Prince only to forget that he had wings. Instead of going for 2 shots at rapid fire I tried to stay where I was barely more than 12" away which of course doesn't matter when the DP has an 18" charge range.

Oldcrons:

I had my Nightbringer drifting through walls and smacking down small units/vehicles against a SM player.

His LR full of assault Temries roll up to deal with the pesky revenant, charging into CC.

Every last one of then was a Lightning Claw termie (he had a fetish for them.. apparently his homebrew chapter has a claw fetish), and he was bragging up how many shreds he's rip my poncy ghost into.

I told him it was a bad idea, but he wasn't interested in my telling him that he had no chance of hurting NB. He rolled a heap of hits (not surprisingly) and then asked me in a smug voice 'so what's you're dude's Toughness, not that it matters as he's lunchmeat anyway...'

He was unhappy to find that he couldn't do diddly to NB, and was ticked to find that NB could ignore his invulns also...

I read a battle report a few years ago. A Tau player was playing in a tournament against a White Scar player. Mission was Dawn of War. White Scar had an all bike army, but no Kor'sarro Khan. Tau player wins the roll off and deploys first. White Scar player opts not to deploy anything. Tau player infiltrates 2 very large Kroot squads stretch across White Scar's table edge. White Scar automatically loses on turn 1 because none of his units were able to move onto the board. Fastest game I've ever read.

I think one of the worst I've heard about was at regional 'Ard Boyz. One of the guys from our FLGS, a Daemon player who took first in the local 'Ard Boyz tourney, wound up going up against a new-ish Imperial Guard player (mainly a guy who hadn't played against Daemons before). About turn 2, he moved his flamers of Tzeentch into the perfect position to wipe out a few squads of Guardsmen, virtually securing his victory in the game...

And promptly forgot to shoot them. The Guard player took down both squads of Flamers, and then had the troops available to start blasting away at the big nasties coming up to meet him, including Fateweaver.

One of mine: I was playing my Eldar against, among other things, Dark Eldar. I turned my wave serpent to face something, completely ignoring the tooled-up squad of warriors, now with a perfect shot at the rear armour of my serpent. He ended up getting destroyed to a man, but took more than his army was worth with him.

Just a few weeks ago I was playing a buddy of mine. He was playing Deathwing and for shiggles I was playing his own Tyranid army. At some point he got the great idea to multi-charge 5 LC Terminators out of a LR into 2 Trygon Primes. 20 seconds later I made two consolidate moves.

My Thousand Sons army was going up against a Grey Knights army. I had at least one squad, maybe both squads of my Thousand Sons troops in some tree area terrain, looking out over an open area.

Now, I don't know if the GK player just forgot about the Sons' AP3 inferno bolts, or thought his GKs were tough enough to take it. Either way, he deepstruck his squad into the open, about 18" away from the treeline. Not the wisest move by itself, but then he scattered... closer to the trees. Which dropped him right into rapid fire range.

My Sons wiped out that entire GK squad in one round of shooting. Poor guy nearly cried.

Curb stomping in the Eye of Terror!

In a GT 2000pt Tourny last year...

ME: Typical KanWall General with Ghazzie/Snikrot

Him: Draigowing GK (bunch termies (two, maybe three squads... I think), reg marine squad and 2 DreadKnights w/ jump pack)... at least, that's what I think I remembered that he had... his models hardly hit the table...

Why I'm telling this story? Most epically bad DS/reserve rolls ever witness'ed with these human eyes...

Game: Spearhead with 3 obj

Him: Rolls Grandmaster thingamagig... granted outflanking to his Pally units (WTF!?!?!) "I'm thinking... why he do that?"

ME: I got first turn...

Him: I go all in researve

ME: Oookay...

ME: By my 2nd turn, I spread out my boyz as much as I can that essentially covered the entire half of the board and denying my right side flank from his outflankers... (also, have all 3 obj)

Him: His 2nd turn, got one Driago/Pally unit, Dreadknight DSand one reg DS termie squad.
a) Driago tried to come on my Right (that's what he rolled), thus unit destroyed (derp, derp...)
b) DreadKnight mishapped, resulting my placing it wherever it want...
c) Reg termie squad mishapped, lost in the warp (derp, derp...)

ME: ouch...

ME: Turn 3, DreadKnight dies under combined KanWall shooting (was epic tho... took awhile)

Him: His turn 3, got all other units in
a) Small Pally unit tried again to outflank on my side, that I'm still dening him, thus unit destroyed (derp, derp...)
b) Second DreadKnight mishapped too, lost in the warp (derp, derp...)
c) His reg marine squads walks on his table edge to hide somewhere

ME: Turn 4, what do I say to him? All he has is his regular marine in some far corner away from my kanwall... All I said was... "damn... sorry dude"...
a) To make matters worst, I rolled for Ghazzie/Snikrot to come in at the time... needless to say, game was over...
b) Opponent took the beating like a champ... laughed about it afterwards and went to watch our friends play.

Game took only 45 minutes
