Subject: Possible Robotech minis game in the works
I wish Carl Macek and Harmony Gold would catch fire and die. That way it'd be possible to get some actual licensed Macross (and by extension, Mospeada) products here in the states.
Paulson - good job on the minis.
Pallidium, meh.
H.B.M.C. wrote:If they're clever they'll do the minis in roughly the same scale as BTech minis. BTech players will dive at them!
Macross has what, 6 miniatures that would be used in Battletechs lineup. BattleTech has what, another 200 miniatures besides what Paulson is working on. It'd be neet, but realistically it's a small drop in a big bucket for BattleTech.

Umm Carl Macek is dead, and has been since 2010 =o[
What people don't understand is back in the early 80's Japanimation was VERY hard to find in north america. It wasn't until VHS beat out Beta for dominence that bootleg VHS tapes started to show up.
Carl just wanted to bring Macross over here but he couldn't get syndication rights, so he aquired the rights to Macross, Super Dimensional Calvary Southern Cross and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA spliced them together to hit the right number of episodes for syndication package and robotech was born. (Fun fact, Southern Cross wasnt even set on earth it was set on a planet called Gerion(sp?) which had two moons so they had to airbrush out the second moon, plus Nova Satori ( Lana Isavia) is one of my Fav charactos )
What robotech did was bring a whole new generation of kids into Japanimation ( it wouldn't be called anime for many years still). There was some stuff on TV here like Starblazers and Battle of the Planets ( Science Ninja Team Gatchaman) but the pickings where slim.
There where a few articles about this in the robotech comics ( not the Comico crap, I think Invid War, and invid war Aftermath.) and he explains it rather well.
What I can't get is the hate that robotech gets from 'pure diehard' Macross fans most of who where not even born when Robotech was doing it's first run on North American TV. People just don't realise how different things where before the net.

i actually know that, but his name lives on, and so does Harmony Gold.

Not speaking for all diehard fans by any means. The problem is that the Harmony Gold "forever licensing" won't let Macross into the States. Any Macross including 1, 2, Plus, 7, Zero, or Frontier - videos, toys, posters, soundtracks - any of it. If it has the Macross in it, it ain't getting in the U.S. And it's only the U.S., everywhere else can have Macross and Robotech. And Harmony Gold is esentially dead, having two new projects of their own in 25+ years....yeah.
I liked Robotech when it first aired, and still do. And I know Macek is about as gateway as Akira or Ninja Scroll or any of your other late 80's favorites, but dammit I feel like an ozzie trying to buy GW when I try and buy anything Macross and I put the blame squarely on Macek and Harmony Gold.

I totally agree on that as well, I'm old enough to remember watching "Japanimation" as a kid in the early 80's.
My closest guess is that just like the GW fanboys the anime fanboys always feel the need to white knight anything that doesn't fit their flawed view. ::shrug::
The other thing I don't get is the instant flame attitude towards Palldium, especially since by approaching the venture into miniatures they are showing an openess to launch into not only a new market but also take on a new rules set. Which to me indicates they want to step away from their traditional approach to rpgs.
I love how people point to the Robotech rpgs and say none of this type of trash! Have you guys reaslized that a RPG system won't work for miniatues? Secondly it's from 1985, it's older than GW rogue trader! There is no system that is that old and wouldn't look bad. So it'd hardly a fair comparison.
People need to get the bug out of their backside and realize that this won't be a 1980's style game design and they are just going to be a parent publisher due to already having the liscense established. This is their chance to modernize and create a new system wholecloth. It will be a very distinct break from the product type they've sold in the past.
Some people complain that Palladium has gone after it's fans and issued C&D letters and punished fans by letting a MMO opportunity fall apart, all I can say is GW say what? Lawsuits and controlling IP are part of every industry not just the miniatures industry. Everything that Palladium has done in defending their titles GW has done to a power of 10 and there's still plenty of fans rallying around them.

I think it's the 80's soundtrack and the voiceacting that makes me more of a Robotech fan than a Macross fan.
The Macross soundtrack was awful, and the voices sounded too OLD. Max was particularly bad. The voice actor was only in his mid 20's at the time, but I wear he sounded 40. I'm sure some other fanboy is going to be outraged that I don't like the Macross soundtrack
But then there's Minmay. Yes. Kill Minmay. Kill her.

Yes couldn't agree more, she was annoying in both versions. My one complaint is that they cut the song 'My boyfriend is a pilot' and put in the song 'It's my time to be a star'. Minor gripe that I wouldn't know about for years and years. But I do like Pilot better. Ranka Lee did a nice version in Macross F though. =o]
As I said before Paulson, Shut up and take my money Especially when you get to Mospeada (Military Operation Solder Protection Emergency Aviation Dive Armour). =o]

Sorry, I was wrong. The picture really reminded me of my toy Excalibur, but I see now they're actually quite different. Love this new Excalibur / Warhammer model, and now I want one.
Here's a shot of my toy with my Warhammer model (forgive the paintjob, it was like 10 years ago and the model is a little dusty lol)

You can get them on eBay in (I believe) 1/144 scale - works out at about the same size as a Armorcast Mad Cat or Vulture... non-transformable, of course! I have one, and they are very impressive...
QUICK eBAY RESEARCH... in fact, there's one for sale right now...
I actually bought one of these from this bloke, and the model is amazing.

Scale miniatures? What a novel idea!
I watched Robotech when I was a kid and was not aware of the Macross originals at all. Later on in teen years I watched Macross and was like meh, Robotech was better. My younger brother was too young to remember when Robotech aired in the US so he remembers Macross and likes it better. So I think the difference for fans of one over the other is which they saw first (or remember seeing as in the case of my brother) This is why the generation that did not watch the syndicated Robotech see it as the 'bad american version' In other words it is not their fault that they cannot apreciate what we had.

this is true, but the current price of these miniatures, would make any player wanting the old Unseen look to jump on this and buy handfuls of each of their favor mech. I know for a fact if they make what ever the Marauder is the setting, close to the size of the 75ton mech on the hexed game or near the size of the IS Marauder II I would be buying at least 4-8 of them, I know depending on price of the Warhammers(again I lack the name for the Macross/Robotech) I will be getting 4-8. other unseens will also be nabbed up depending on what they look like and how much they cost.

Ditto. I'd nab a dozen or so Marauders in plastic/resin to add to my dozen or so Marauders in lead/pewter.
I kinda like Marauders.

I started playing BT when TR3050 came out, I own 300+ pewter clan mechs, and i would sell every one in a heartbeat if it meant i could keep the 4 lead unseens I got from my brother for my birthday.
If you think the unseens aren't a big deal, you should investigate why the newest Mechwarrior game they were producing rolled over in died in a fiery heap.

Tactical Zentradi battle pod = Regult
Light Artillery BP = Regult Light
Heavy '" " " = Regult Heavy
Recon Scout = Regult Tactical Scout
Officers BP = Glaug Combat System (Kamjinn (Khyron) has three personally) (Battletech Maurader)
Male Powe Armour = Nousjadeul-Ger
Female PA = Queadlunn-Rau Battle Suit ( one of my personal favs' especially Myria's)
I hope you can do models for all of them eventually, I would love to have a group of Female PA's taking on Veritech's and blowing up Destroids. Female Zentradi for the win. Hell I would like to see Full Sized Zentradi figues also They would be about the same size as a veritech in Battloid mode.

Pallidium has the rights to robotech miniature, so yes. But, not sure about international rights. Can you get there Robotech RPG over there?

That's kinda like saying Mario is just one of hundreds of Nintendo characters and not very important
Those designs are the core of what gave rise to battletech, the line may have expanded beyond that, but those design are still what defines the entire setting for most of the players. Take a look at any of the old BT book covers, those designs make up at least 80% of the cover art. Those mechs becoming available again would be a huge deal regardless of what system they are marketed for.
(Additionally it's not just 6 designs; it's 16. Plus another 10 if you want to count the dougram stuff. Macross and Dougram composed more than half the BT original line)
The goal with the miniatures is to make a stand alone line, although we are well aware of the rather significant cross market implications.
Harmony Gold's ownership of the rights only applies to the US, outside the US it's controlled by Studio Nue and Tatsunoko so any product intended for non-US locals would need to go through them. That's what makes for the difficulties with allowing the new generation of macross series in the US. HG's ownershop blocks their stuff from coming in unless it's through 3rd party companies.
