THQ! What has happened! From an MMO to a Quasi-multiplayer game?

How the mighty have fallen...

They put way too much into the udraw and it broke them
The company is in shambles, struggling to survive, one more bad realease and they are gone for good.
MMOs are too risky for a company very very close to going under thier stock hovers at 60 cents
Good thing I bought 2500 of them for 2 dollars right before they crashed

I have no problem with this moving to a single-player game. I wish more MMO's would do that. I hate MMO's.

That said, I do feel for the guys who lost their jobs over this. Ross Watson, the guy who was the head developer on many of the 40K RPGs at FFG, has been working in Austin on this game. I hope he's ok.

Sorry, but THQ has now truly dropped the ball by doing this.

i love mmos and i love 40k, but this had an air of doom about it for awhile now and i would suspect they are going to do the bare minimum they can to get this out the door in some form just to recoup what they can, which does not sound like a recipe for gaming greatness.
That being said if they can morph this into eldar scrolls (see what i did there!) i think we'd all be happy.

I'd much prefer a more polished solo experience than an underfunded and have hearted attempt at a MMO

There is nothing inherently wrong with MMOs, they just have to be more like EvE (i.e engaging and different) and a lot less like WoW.

Well said. I dunno if I will ever play this video game even if it gets made, but I certainly wouldn't have played an MMO.

Thank the gods! I might actually give this game a chance then

MMOs tend to suck the lifeforce out of companies. Plus I've played enough "monthly fee mmos" to deduce there isnt all that much different between those and free ones.

Better for it to be a single player game than no game at all... which was more my concern with THQ taking the dive that it is...

I guess I'll go against the grain and say I love MMO's and I'm sorry to see this happen. I would have loved playing it and I feel awful for all the employees who've lost their jobs.

(in full candor, I do work in the MMO industry and it's my livelihood, but I still love them).

Woo hoo! Great news IMO. I can't see myself getting back into an MMO at this point in my life, what with the immense time required, grinding, repetitive quests etc....

I couldn't agree more. I hate MMOs. Haven't enjoyed any of them. I'll probably actually get this game, now that it isn't an MMO.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Sad yes. But soul crushing? No.

We lost an MMO that would likely fall like so many more, like WoW is now. However, we are still getting a 40k rpg! One that will have multi-player aspects. Think of Knights of the Old Republic but with some co-op with friends! Borderlands, a great FPS with minor rpg elements (and its soon to be released sequal with 96.5% more wub wub). The potential for a great game is here, not what we wanted but lets face it, with it 40k rpg by relic/thq, we are going to be giving money away.

That's that people say SWTOR is, KOTOR with multiplayer.

I was looking forward to a 40k MMO, but RPG more in-depth than Space Marine is good enough for me.
It does suggest it'll be single-race though, to save them having to write stories for very different game paths.

Wait, do we actually know what kind of game it's going to be ? The way I take it, it could be anything in the end.

Skinnereal expressed my main fear, to some extent ; an MMO features a persistent world, its developers have to go big. Going for a solo game, they have much more leeway to produce a half-assed game. That being said, I'll judge when I see it.

Frankly I find this good news, I just couldn't wrap my head around how they were going to make this into an MMO without losing what makes the 41st millenium what it is.

Allfather willing a single player game will stabilize the company and we'll keep getting awesome 40k games.

I just hope THQ doesn't take Relic all the way down with them.

Yeah, we all need to accept that this would have failed hard as an MMO. You can't really beat WoW and THQ would have bankrupted themselves trying.

I'm sure the MMO would'nt be able to meet expectations, but at the same time, I really want an open-worldy 40k game.

In terms of video games in general, I think it would be amazing to see a large-scale IG fps. The way they've been going lately (at least for MW) has been towards spectacular set-pieces and dramatic warfare. What better setting for that than hundreds of thousands of guardsmen charging an enemy position? A battery of earthshakers going crazy on an ork charge? Or a baneblade assaulting heretic positions? Orbital assaults? That, my friends, would be amazing. To be put in the shoes of a guardsman, as part of a truly massive war. Not like Space Marine, where there's 4 of you in small-scale engagements. That isn't why I love 40k fluff and fiction. And it isn't why I love Dan Abnett. His sense of scale, from Titanicus to Armour of Contempt is outstanding. I would love to experience that.
