Troubled publisher THQ announced today that Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online will drop the "online" portion of its name and become a solo experience -- with multiplayer aspects. Actual product details will be made later.

"As previously announced, we have been actively looking for a business partner for the game as an MMO. However, based on changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO, we believe the right direction for us is to shift the title from an MMO to a premium experience with single and multiplayer gameplay, robust digital content and community features," THQ CEO Brian Farrell wrote in a statement.

As a result of this change, THQ raises the body count of its collapse, with 79 full-time employees let go at Vigil Games in Austin and another 39 employees at Relic Entertainment.

Its in Dakka Discussions as well, but I'd guess this is actually news.

As I said there.. wow, still partially interested, Age of Reckoning suffered the same fate, but still.. dang.

This is the greatest news I could hear about Dark Millenium. MMOs are universally awful.

I just hope it is a very robust single player game then.

The little nugget of hope in me is thinking some kind of 40k-meets-Fallout 3 kind of thing.

But I have a feeling that ain't gonna happen.

I'm just hoping it's a proper game and not a repeat of the Stargate; Resistance fiasco.

Like I said, although not perfect, Age of Reckoning was a MMO when on the intial drawing board and early work, hence the hide helm options and such.

I'll miss the 40K MMO, but this might have more potential for just chilling, especially if they allow us to use some of the classes they where working on, so we not automatically Marines.

Multiple play throughs etc, might be good.

They're company collapsed completely.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Well thats a shame, I was really hoping this one would pull through.

Probably for the best anyways, it never would have lived up to the expectations of so many fan boys.

I wonder if it will be space marine centered or like Dark heresy style game?

Reckon they changed it since THQ had been asking for backers to help with a MMO, since they didn't they went single player.

I think some of us have had 'doubts' for a while, it went very quiet. I would guess with this change they will be at E3 telling everyone who will listen how awesome this change will be for us.

Well, at least we finally get a 40k RPG out of it. Losing that much of the team really doesn't bode well though.

Personally, I'd prefer if they just switched focus to a Space Marine console/pc sequel instead if they're not going the full MMO route. I was thinking that Dark Millenium would be my first MMO (I passed on SWTOR once I saw details on it) but looks like my record of not playing them will stand for the forseeable future.

At least with Space Marine, they know that they sold a million copies despite a mediocre campaign and barebones multiplayer on release (albeit addictive despite that) and have an audience waiting for more of the same. IIRC, the MMO was only announced for the pc so I'm wondering if the pared down version will stay PC only. I didn't see any mention of consoles on either the Kotaku or Joystiq articles.

Thats what i was thinking, it would probably sell better if they made it for the consoles as well if they are going to get of the mmo part. But I think i'll keep my fingers crossed that they at least finish the game instead of canceling it.

Well, again.... I'm a horrible MMO junkie, so on the one hand, this is good, as it means one less game for me to keep tabs on and one less decision to make regarding which MMO I want to play as my main game. Also probably good as with the reduced staff the game might've sucked (sucked even more that it would've already, probably).

On the other hand, I really wanted a good 40K MMO.

I feel bad for all the people who lost their jobs. Vigil Games is here in Austin, and that has to be a good portion of their staff. Best of luck to them, and there are plenty of game companies around town, so I'm sure they'll land on their feet.

That being said, if this is either an open world rpg in the vein of Fallout or Elder Scrolls, I'll snatch it up in a minute. If it ends up being diverted into a Space Marine sequel or soemthing similar I'll no doubt get it as well. Basically, I'm not an MMO player or PC gamer, so a single player console game is far more likely to get my money.

You can never beat your first time. The second generation is shinier, stronger, faster and superior in every regard save one, and it's an unfair criticism to level, but it simply can't be as original. - Andy Chambers, on the evolution of Games Workshop games

It looked very poor anyway, even as a single player game I doubt that it will be any good.
