I'm sure many will be upset, but for me, it's actually welcome news to an extent. Currently I'm playing SWTOR, but I was interested in the 40k MMO, and didn't want to pay another subscription fee. Now I can purchase the game without having to worry about another one. Besides, with a good MMO, unless you get with other people, it's just a really big one player game anyhow.

Thorian Enclave Inquisitorial Guard - 6000points
Grey Knights - 4000pts
Divine Crusaders - 5000pts
Order of the Argent Shroud - 3500pts
Kabal of the Black Heart - 3000pts
Wife's Deathskulls - 4000pts

On one hand, I am sad there will be no 40k mmo but then again, I am loosing interest in mmo's in general.
On the other hand, this will (hopefully) mean a much more deeper rpg which would be god like if it was open world

My only worry is, do you think they will start from scratch? The art style of the game may be a bit errrrm, boring? For a singleplayer 40k feel that is. If it was an open world with space marine visuals then that would be amazing. How much do you reckon they are changing?

Also the multiplayer should be awesome if it is being made from an mmo setup, imagine large scale matches

Much rather hear about some new RTS 40K love. They crapped all over the game with the DOW2 concept.

Rather go back to pick up where the Sisters of Battle left off. System wide rts, with added content to include wars with rpg type squads/ armies.

They missed the mark with DOW2.

Dancing on the dead bodies of THQ.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

"Dancing" is too harsh a statement for me but I much preferred DOW1 to DOW2. I still play the former (Soulstorm) and never went beyond the opening two scenarios of the latter.

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

Last I heard DoW3 is a bit of a long ways off. Only thing I've heard was customizable armies. These games just dont pop out of the ground

I loved both DoW1 and 2 but for different reasons.

Likewise, I'm very happy that this is becoming an SP game, since we honestly haven't had a game that really covers the breadth of the 40k universe.

I play mainly for story, and really can't stand the slot machine mentality and mechanics of a lot of MMOs, loot based games, and various Asian RPGs.

My first response was sadness, but then I pictured a game with an addictive Diablo dynamic of leveling, talent specing, and limitless replayability with a variety of races, all with different class options. This game could be a beautiful marriage of DoW with Space Marine, and more epic than both combined. Implementing Diablo's shared auction house. PvP where a group of players, all the same race, fights a group all of a different race.

It's not a stretch to imagine this game providing a richer experience than Diablo III. I think this is the right direction for them to have taken.
What a hard choice for them to have made though...

I think the problem with a sandbox style 40k game is explaining it plot wise. as a space marine they really arent allowed to go god mode all over. And id rather not have to deal with the god mode character that firewarrior made.

I for one was very happy to hear this...we all know that an mmo would not at all do well...it just would not have worked...now a 40k rpg? that is a beautiful idea and that should of been the game plan to start with.

So we're getting a single player MMO? Does not sound fun, and I doubt they're going to commit the resources to radically redesign the MMO to a proper single-player game.

This game will never see the light of day.

Single Player PC games aren't where the money's at in the industry anymore, it's in the micro-transacted F2P MMO. This is the cash-cow of the next 5-10 years, apart from iPhone games, which cost $20 to dev and a million people buy for $4.99.

From the sounds of things, THQ doesn't have the capital to develop a Mass Effect-like game set in the 40K universe, though that's exactly what this press-release sounds like it's going for. Multiplayer? ME3 has multiplayer. It's fun, sure, but it's very... samey, with a limited number of fairly small battlegrounds and just a handful of enemy types.

Co-op? Probably not. It'll be online multiplayer, probably in line with ME3, where your endeavors in MP affect your SP campaign in some probably-meaningless way.

incidentally, Posit, there's no such thing as a single-player MMO. It's not that hard, in the end, to switch between one format and the other, though the results are often... less than stellar. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was originally designed as an MMO, which is why it has FedEx and Courier quests, but was then switched to a single-player game after SW:TOR took the MMO crown from it for the Origin platform.

This game? This game is probably not going to suck terribly, but it's also probably not going to be very good. I do hope I'm proved wrong though.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

That sounds fun, and something I might get into. Im not a big video game fan in general, and everything Ive heard about MMOs from people who play them turn me off. Higher level players waiting at start/spawn locations just to ambush new players, people practically living on the game until they are super high level, then hunting down lower level players, Idiot teens/pretteens yelling stupid crap through headsets, etc. Not my idea of fun.

Whats my game?

Is the top comment referring to DoW3 or Dark Millennium? Because DM isnt an RTS

Update on the new direction of Dark Millenium and confirmed release date 5/13/2013:

http://www.videogamer.com/pc/warhammer_40k_dark_millenium_online/news/warhammer_dark_milleniums_new_direction_explained.html

For the work blocked:

Videogamer.com wrote:THQ head Danny Bilson has detailed how Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millenium Online will make the transition from MMO to single player title with multiplayer elements.

In an interview with Ripten, Bilson stated that the core gameplay can still be salvaged from what had been developed earlier on.

"In particular, the shooting mechanics are real-time, not turn-based. The content is absolutely incredible, and any time anyone ever had any doubts about it, all I had to do was bring them into the room and show them progress on the game. So there's a tremendous amount of content that was built."

The firm had announced earlier in the year it was looking for an external partner to invest in the MMO, however the publisher failed to find any as no one wants to invest in subscription-based MMOs, says Bilson.

However, he adds that he is glad the company decided to simply scale back the game rather than bring on an investor who might "possibly dilute some of the controls around it."

He emphasised: "That game is still sitting with the people who invented it five years ago, and honestly, they are incredibly excited about the new direction. That is the absolute truth, and when we announce it, and you speak to them, they'll be able to tell you themselves.

"If you liked Space Marine, you're gonna love this thing. It's much deeper."

The game is scheduled to release May 13, 2013.

You can never beat your first time. The second generation is shinier, stronger, faster and superior in every regard save one, and it's an unfair criticism to level, but it simply can't be as original. - Andy Chambers, on the evolution of Games Workshop games

This could be rather promising. Rather than a MMO, a 40k RPG for the compy.

Yeah it's a shame BioWare and Bethesda are doing so terrible lately with all those crappy RPGs.

Seriously though, I am excited. I hope it stays afloat and actually does release. I also hope they decide to put in some support for modders.

I doubt it will even get out the door. If darksiders doesn't make them a lot of money they will be out of business by July or September. I expect them to start selling off radios and rights soon.

If they somehow do release the game it's going to be with minimal support and infrastructure to support any multiplayer experience.

THQ has lost too much of its thunder and with the current leadership expect it to go straight to the ground.
