This is going to be awesome once done. I've always liked the Vampire Counts from way back when they were still classed as just Undead. I can tell already this display board is going to be soaked in atmosphere. Great start on the Terrorgheist,

Normally I don't like huge lumps of specific scenery on a base but the Terrorghiest will look absolutely awesome on this display board.

More work was done to the base of the terrorgheist. That one is nearly finished now. Maybe a bit more weathering powder and a coat of flat matt varnish to finish... But nothing major. Here's an update:

Still great work man, I like the base, different types of grasses and shrubs make it look real.

My favorite has to be that Terrorgheist. The pose on the buildings looks very natural, and your painting is very clean/crisp.

I'm a bit up in the air atm to add a bit (not too much though) of blooddrops to the claws. It would only be the front claws, and only a small amount of gore. The left front claw in particular just feels a little "empty" to me right now...

Yea I'd say maybe just a little on the left one. I interpret its pose as having swooped down to crush something next to the small buildings it landed on. Then seeing more prey, looks in their direction and growls/shrieks at them, before its going to fly/scramble over to them.

Like a horror movie, you see the monster attack somebody else. Then they spot you. D=

Anyway that's what I got from that pose, lol

Actually, that could well be a very good solution. Glueing it in there wouldn't be a problem... The blooddrips I used on this model and the crypthorrors is glue after all....

An empire soldier or an Orc (according to the fluff, it's mainly the greenskins that keep blocking the strigoi to reclaim Morkain).

Worked on the first upright wall section today to seperate the lowest tier on the board from the upper tier.

It does take a while, but I think the result is going to be consistent and thus far, I'm rather happy with the progress.

Here's a few shots of how I made it:









I used the crosses from the "deathknell watch" tower on the wall section. I still have 2 of those for the right wall side. It's nice that all these WHFB kits are so nicely interchangable.

The witchtower is being a pain in the ass to assemble though... I'll try to get some WIP shots of that soon.

I've been doing some more work on the board for this update. I took some steelsheet and had it cut to size at my school (I'm lucky that we have a welding and steel department there). This steelsheet will be used to make an underlining for the holes that will have the bases in them. It's easier to just explain with a picture, so here goes:







I made a small indentation in the foamboard by removing the bottom cardboard layer and replacing that with 0.6mm thick steel. It would also give the models a nice solid base to stand in AND a good way to keep them magnetised on there so they won't topple over if somebody happens to nudge the board.

I also continued some work on the wall section. Note that none of it is glued down yet, but it all sits nice and flush... So glue is "optional"



The sides will be covered in acrylic modelling paste. It's new stuff for me, but it was recommended by my local arts and crafts store. And it's pretty cheap, so I'm giving it a go!





I'm going to let that cure for 24 hours and then see it it's easy to sand down to get an edge that's smoother then a baby's bottom!

Love the Terrorgheist conversion. Very dynamic.

That is the big picture. I also have a skaven army with steelmade movement trays and magnetised bases. I just clamp the into a steel toolbox and take them to my FLGS. It works like a charm and I have no issues moving the big, intricate (and sometimes fragile) WHFB monsters around. Here's a shot of my skaven army in it's toolbox to show you what I mean:



In the end, buying the magnets is cheaper then buying lots of battlefoam trays for all your models. Right now, I can use this toolbox to carry ANY of my armies (skaven, grey knigths, imperial guard, khador,...) because they all have a few magnets on their base. Buying them on e-bay, I pay around €0.10 per magnet... so that's not really hideously expensive.

Oh, that one wasn't mine... This isn't nearly finished. I did see another entry with a terrorgheist on one of the buildings however. Seems to be a popular way to base these models!

Wow my apologies. I saw it was VC and then the terrorgheist on the building and immediately thought it was yours. I will say, yours is much better.

Not really a big update, but I did do SOMETHING during the initial diablo III release week, wich was unexpected at best...

Anyway, I assembled the witch fate Tor tower (and man, what a b*tch that thing is to assemble). It'll be standing behind the terrorgheist.

I also assembled a deathknell watch tower to "balance it out" on the right hand side of the board. The mortis engine will be placed to it's left, along with 3 more crypt horrors in front of it.









A custom staircase will be made to lead up to the small third tier of the board. But that'll take a while before I start that up...

Apart from that, the concept is getting pretty close to finished. I always aproach my work organicly and "as I go along" rather then hyper planned from the get go.

Finished the terrorgheist and finally got around to take propper shots of it:

Outstanding work, Im loving the progress in this thread. For the stairs to the third tier. Will they be carved into the rock?

I'm thinking of making that an "external" staircase in the same flagstone layout as the other scratch build ramp.

I'm a bit undecided yet to add a flight of stairs, or a diagonal ramp in an L-shape to match with the front ramp.

Anyway, there will be a staircase/ramp in between the third tier and the witchfate Tor tower to fill in that area a bit more.

The idea is to get the mortis engine on that third tier, because I'm afraid it'll get "lost" between the two towers if it's on a lower tier.

I like the idea of the ramp a little better. I see what you mean about the Mortis being overshadowed by the two towers.
