These are really nice.

So for $1500 you get 3 game contents and all of it is painted?

Looking at the wording, I think it is one game's contents, painted for you by Golem Studios.

Just found the time to jump on this thread, I'll try and answer some of your questions shortly! (things have been INSANE since the KS launched)

First stretch goal has been posted:

Target: $40,000
Result: If we can get more support, every game will be upgraded with alternate sculpts of the troopers with alt female poses (with and without helmets on). This should give more variety to the poor hapless grunts that are about to be turned into nano-virus feed....

Mike, not sure if you will return to the boards, but I think I remember hearing on Beasts of War Sedition Wars is suppose to have 2 forms. Board game and a "traditional" minis game version (use of measuring tapes, etc.).

Is this true or do I just have a terrible memory?

The plan is to do the first game (now funded so actually happening!) and at least one expansion for it. If the demand is there (and we haven't dropped down dead from the effort), we *may* roll it out into a skirmish game.

To be honest though - I can't see far past this at the moment!

We do have some really cool stuff planned for the first expansion though...

Feedback, preorders, creating a buzz, being community oriented... are all things you can do normally without kickstarter as companies have been doing that for years. You can disagree (and it's a reasonable viewpoint) but I feel like kickstarter should be used by companies that don't yet have access to traditional outlets or for projects that would be too risky (and therefore not get any backing) via traditional methods. What good does the game do alot of players if the store they play in can't get in on the actions whereas a 6 months ago it would have? This game doesn't need a kickstart as its a prime example of a high-end traditional market release.

Hi Warboss.

I understand your concerns, but you shouldn't naturally assume this could have been launched in any other way. Studio McVey is a minnow in the gaming industry, in reality is just myself and my wife, ali. It's been unbelievably hard to bring this as close to market as we have, and we have pretty much bet the farm on it. The extra revenue that KS will (hopefully!) bring will allow us to make the game how we really want it - launching it the traditional way would have meant less miniatures, smaller rule book, less scenarios and cheaper components.

I totally understand your point about supporting local game shops - but my hope is the extra marketing buzz that this might bring, will drive sales there too when it launches in October. We plan to have support programs in the shops and give them all they need to make it a success.

It's nice to hear you call it a prime example of a high-end traditional market release though! We must have done something right!

cheers!

And very nice the models are too, thank you sir

Oddly I was looking at putting them together this morning, so this is actually really good timing. I wonder if they have sorted out the odd scale problem with some of the figures though... some of the earlier models look really odd next to the more recent ones.

I couldn't resist getting the game and the resin Kara...

lol.....nothing like a little salt for an open wound

Seriously, I wouldn't have had a chance to paint thme, or play the game (UNIVERSITY!!) so I'm stoked they've gone to a good home, and I hope you get many a great gaming evening out of them.

@Warboss

Regardless of what you may thin, Kickstarter is there for everyone to use, from Studio McVey to Ford Motor Company. The way I see it, you plegde your wedge and you get something for your money, simple as that......I think it's a novel way of funding a project, and its about as risk proof as it gets for smaller companies who want to launch something that they have no idea if it will be well recieved by the market or not. Studio McVey could have gone the "traditional" route and been worse off for the experience. This way, the player base gets a game they believe in, and Studio McVey gets to have a few more nights under a roof with a hot meal on the table.....I find it a bit difficult to see the negative side of that transaction.

Man down, Man down....

The other thing about kickstarter projects as opposed to traditionally released products is the stretch goals. Like Mike said, it would have had cheaper components and less stuff if released through traditional means. Companies, especially small independant companies, have to be very, very careful what they put in a box and how large of a print run they go for. The larger the print run, the cheaper each individual unit becomes, but you have to front ALL the money for production yourself before anything gets made and hope you made a good enough product that it will catch on and you'll make your money back. That's before you can even think of turning a profit.

Kickstarter projects like these are the best, I think. A fully realized, beautifull project that is looking for funding to make it even better. It's a great product with amazing components that will only get better and better and better the more people that back it. We're already getting alternate scuplts that we would not have if this was completely fronted by Studio McVey only (I think it's safe to assue they'll get another $14k before the 35 days pass). That is something that wouldn't have happened otherwise, maybe in an expansion that you would have had to pay extra for. What's next? More scenarios? More alternate sculpts or additional models? More compnents or much better quality components? And when the board game finally hits shelves, all that extra stuff improves the final product beyond anything that could have possibly gone into the original run if just privately funded.

Once payday happens, you better believe I'm backing this thing.

Nowhere does it say anything like this on Kickstarter itself, of course.

They're interested in all projects funding successfully - it is how they make their money.

Companies get to accurately (!) gauge interest and book pre-orders, and make some extra money (maybe), and oftentimes consumers get some cool freebies/extras for being an early adopter.

And if people feel like you do and vote with their wallets (or vote to not open their wallets, I guess!), well, then it won't happen.

I really don't see the downside at all.

Fair enough. Will the mainstream release in October then differ significantly from this one? I frankly don't buy much stuff new nowadays (after 20 years of gaming, I have way too much crap...) so when I do I try to funnel my purchases (as opposed to trades) through the FLGS as much as possible.

I don't owe McVey anything. The man makes awesome models, and I love painting and playing with awesome models. I will continue to to buy and paint awesome models, and if they just so happen to be produced by Mike McVey, then he is the one that will benefit from that. As a result, he has benefited quite a bit from me over the years and it looks like he will continue to do so.

I just hope one of the stretch goals (or purchase options) matches the one from Zombiecide where you can get a second set of tiles.

Hi Mike!

Really like the look of this game, have been drooling over the Sedition Wars sculpts for some time, but would never buy any on account of the price.

With plastics, this is a definite buy for me, the quality is just way too good. Very glad to see it got funded so quickly!

I think the only McVey model I've ever bought is Broga Hourigsen. I do own some Hordes minis so some of them could be McVey minis. I think my peak of interest in the hobby was around the time of that epic warhammer quest diorama though, and the 40k ones were great too, as was the 'How to paint' book. Mike Mcvey and Mark Gibbons were a great inspiration, along with Chambers and Jervis I suppose.

I took it as a compliment too - really, it nice to be referred to in that way after all the work we put in.

As for scales, we have two different scales for our ranges. The LE resin range are all a little larger than normal as they are primarily designed for collectors and painters - around 35mm. That's because we want to be able to get a little more fine detail and life into them.
The Sedition Wars stuff is solidly 28mm though.

Pledged my $125. Coming from Mike McVey I'm expecting a VERY high standard of game and models. Mike made my all time favourite model (Shown Below) and if I ever won the lottery, he'd find himself making it again for a very large commission!

Really looking forward to seeing all the minatures, hopefully the game will arrive just in time for Christmas. My only question is on the P&P. Seeing as McVey Studios is in the UK, why the $25 P&P?
