Fresh off the press, Sedition Wars: Battle for Alabaster is up on Kickstarter. Sci Fi Survival Horror boardgame (sounds a bit like zombiecide but IN SPACE) but some (all?) the miniatures are from Studio McVey

$80 nets you the base game (which at retail will be $90)

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/coolminiornot/sedition-wars-battle-for-alabaster

Sedition Wars : Battle for Alabaster is a fast paced tactical miniatures game for two players, developed by Studio McVey and published by CoolMiniOrNot.

Survival horror at its finest, game play is fast and bloody – creating urgency and claustrophobic terror, as the Vanguard fight for their very lives against an unrelenting nightmare.

Battle for Alabaster is the first part in the Sedition Wars game experience. Future expansions will introduce exciting new factions, evocative settings and expand on the compelling storyline that guides the action. Once players have fought for control of Alabaster, they will want to continue the adventure in future episodes.

Important: figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted.

From the mind of industry legend Mike McVey, and created by the finest artists, miniatures sculptors and game designers, the contents and play materials of the game are of the highest quality.. Sedition Wars : Battle for Alabaster represents the best that miniatures gaming has to offer!

The game contains –

50 highly detailed 28mm miniatures
50 Scenic miniature bases
5 double sided full colour expandable game boards
60 page rules and scenario book
Vanguard and Strain stat cards
100+ full colour game counters

Check out the detail of these great models!

Stretches!

40k REACHED
Achieved! If we can get more support, every game will be upgraded with alternate sculpts of the troopers with alt female poses (with and without helmets on). This should give more variety to the poor hapless grunts that are about to be turned into nano-virus feed....

60k REACHED
Reinforcements! Each Biohazard level and above pledge gets an additional squad of 12 vanguard troopers thrown in for free! Time to contain that infection!

80k REACHED
The Infection markers in all games will be upgraded from paper to plastic. If we hit this goal, we'll open a tool for these nifty tokens and improve Alabaster immensely for everyone! This is a great, super clear design to show which of the Vanguard are suffering the early stages of nano-infection! We're sure you'll agree, much snazzier than putting a paper chit on the base. Also upgraded will be the Nano counter, which doubles as an objective marker.

100k REACHED
If we hit this stretch, every game will get a horrific alternate sculpt of a Phase 1 Strain model. If you didn't have a reason to keep firing before, you sure do now!

120k REACHED
What better way to celebrate having a cool new Strain sculpt than to haveTWELVE additional Strain models? Every Biohazard set gets this additional pack of the horrors if we hit this stretch goal!

140k REACHED
Barker Zosa packs a mean punch with his massive Pulse Cannon. Sometimes, it's ok to blow a hole in the side of a ship. That's when you give Barker a call! If we hit this stretch, every game gets tooled up with this great heavy weapons specialist!

150k REACHED
Quarantine Campaign! Everyone gets a great downloadable campaign that will make use of all the additional figures released for the Biohazard set! Play a massive 70+ miniature battle climax!

170k REACHED
Everyone one loves dice right? Every Biohazard set gets a 6 custom Sedition Wars dice! 3 sexy Vanguard dice and 3 Strain dice!

190k REACHED
Mmm... it appears the good doctor wasn't as healthy as she first appeared! Or is this an insidious copy designed to sow doubt and despair amongst the Vanguard?
If we hit this stretch, every unit of Dr Ridley will ship with a Strain infected version of her! Ships at the same time as Dr Ridley!

210k REACHED
Each Biohazard set will get FOUR extra Phase 3 Strain models, 2 each of the Scythe Witch and Brimstone! I hope those Las-Carbines are fully charged....

240k REACHED
If we hit this stretch, every Lights Out campaign pack gets an additional glow in the dark Scythe Witch and Brimstone and a Opticamo Kara and the rest of the characters! (Don't have shots for the Opticamo characters yet, but you get the idea).

250k REACHED
If we hit this stretch, Mike and Ali will put together a short painting tutorial to get your Battle for Alabaster miniature windfall into decent shape! Every Biohazard set will receive a DVD (region free) with a short tutorial specifically for this Kickstarter. Depending on space limitations, a HD version you can play on your computer will either be included or downloadable.

270k REACHED
The ever popular AI Drone gets a buddy! If we hit this stretch, every Biohazard set gets another Drone! Infect this nanofools! Comes unassembled and unpainted.

300k REACHED
If we hit this stretch, every Biohazard set gets a sweet additional Grendlr, tentacles and all! Personally I think this is one of the most horrific sculpts in the game, and it can't hurt to have two!

330k REACHED
If we hit this stretch, it looks like Mr Banks won't make it off this tub after all. Every one who purchase Niven Banks gets his Strained version free! Ships the same time as Niven.

360k REACHED
The Cthonian is such a cool model... but he's (it's?) a character right? You can only field one of him (it) right? Every Biohazard set will get another Cthonian model free, as well as a stats card to play the model as a Construct Assault Drone, slaved to the Cthonian! He (it?) won't be as infectious or as smart, but he'll (it'll) be just as shooty!

390k REACHED
If we hit this goal, it looks like Ramirez didn't quite detonate that grenade in time. Get a free Strain version of Ramirez with every Ramirez! Ships together with the Sarge in March 2013.

420k REACHED
For all you AI Drone lovers out there, you should get a huge kick out of this one.The large AI Drone actually carries quite a large load out of smaller drones. In the game, these are represented by cardboard counters. But, since all of you have been so great, if we hit this stretch every Biohazard set will get a set of 6 baby drones free! Ships March 2013 with the rest of the new sculpts. Aren't they adorable?

430k REACHED
If we hit this stretch, every copy of Dr Hexen will ship with her evolved version free! Ships together with Dr Hexen in March 2013.

460k REACHED
The Bonecrab attacks by latching on to a living victim and spiking nano-tendrils into its host. This invasive parasitic attack leaves the victim helpless while the creature seizes control of the his motor functions. Once the victim is absorbed into the Strain construct, the Bonecrab detaches, and moves on in search of new prey." Every Biohazard set gets 6 of these skittering horrors if we hit our stretch! Ships in March 2013, unpainted and unassembled. And yes, there are rules for these things.... brrr...

470k REACHED
Complete the crew of the Calamity! If we hit this stretch, Phoenix and Delta join the Cap in his (mis)-adventures on Alabaster Station! They'll ship the same time as the Captain and XO and are free with every set of the Mercenary Crew!

520k REACHED
And so... the end is near. We therefore present you the violent, dangerous, mysterious, Keegan Kor! If we hit this stretch every Biohazard set will have Keegan lurking within! (You'll need to paint and assemble him though, if he'll let you).

600k REACHED
If we hit this stretch, every Biohazard set gets Iron Lily! She may be a little squishy without her THI carapace though... (hint hint). And not to worry, if we don't hit this stretch she'll be available in the CKPM as an option!

650k REACHED
Vanguard forward operators often find themselves adapting to "close encounters." Akosha has decided to switch up to full kick-murder wetwork gear! Ready to get surgical on some Strain mutant freaks? She is. Every Biohazard set gets the battle damaged version of this deadly cyborg if we hit this stretch! Ships March 2013, unpainted and unassembled.

700k REACHED
Morgan has decided to one up Akosha, and suit up in full Wildfire bio-hazard gear. Environmentally self contained for the most destructive of outbreaks, the suit provides enhanced protection from the strain infection. Armed with an incinerator, scanner, and advanced medpack, Morgan is ready to hunt the strain down and burn them out of Alabaster station. If we hit this stretch, every Biohazard set gets Morgan all suited up! Ships March 2013, unpainted and unassembled!

$781,598 REACHED
If we hit this stretch, every Biohazard set gets Gnosis armored Kara free! Ships March 2013, unpainted and unassembled. And not to worry, Kara will still come out for a spin if we miss this stretch, and will be available for $25 in the CKPM if we don't hit it!

$923,681 REACHED
If we hit this stretch, Barker Zosa and his loader frame will be included in every Biohazard set! Ships March 2013, unpainted and unassembled. But not to worry, he'll be available if we don't hit it for $25.

Also, MORE GOODIES
Optional Items

Here are some optional items you can add to your pledge, just increase it by the appropriate amount and we'll send you a survey after the Kickstarter concludes so you can pick what you'd like. Do note the differing shipping times on some of the options.

Dice Pack - Everyone needs more dice right? Each Biohazard set already includes a set of 6, but get another set (or 3)! Ships together with the Quarantine Zone and Biohazard rewards (expected November).

Terrain Pack - This was meant to be a set of resin models sold individually to "bling" out Alabaster station, but with the overwhelming response we've decided to tool it in plastic and give you a 100% complete upgrade! Check out what you get below, SEVENTY pieces of terrain! This is expected to ship in March 2013, ships free anywhere in the world.
Spoiler:

2 x Exocyst
2 x Necrocyst
2 x Macrophage
2 x Genstation
2 x Spore Engine
12 x Security Doors
12 x Normal Double Doors
12 x Narrow Doors
12 x Crates / Low cover / Terminals
2 x Teleport Control
2 x Havoc Defense Turret
2 x Auto-Doc
6 x Corpse

And of course....

Against all odds, Dr Susan Ridley has survived on Alabaster Station. Seemingly uninfected by the Strain, and with a completely shell-shocked orphan in tow, perhaps the doctor can provide the Vanguard team some insight as to what the hell is happening! $10, and Dr Ridley can lend her expertise to your team! In sculpting now, and expected to ship in March. Dr Ridley is promotional figure and will be available only on Kickstarter and at conventions.

By popular demand, we're working on some solo play rules. There'll be a scenario where Vanguard infiltrators with optical camo are attempting to get to an area of the station that has lost power. The only kink in the plan, of course, are patrolling Strain guarding the module! Playing as Vanguard, avoid a firefight as long as you can; get in and get out, like a whisper in the wind....

So, if you're going to be sitting home alone, in the dark, what about some cool optional figures?

Photos for reference only, requires assembly. Actual Opticamo and Glow in the Dark figures will ship with scenic bases.

You don't need this pack to play the Lights Out campaign, but it looked so cool, we had to make some for ourselves. And since we're already making them....

Here's what's in the pack (Kickstarter and conventions only, we're only making these once):

Spoiler:
Glow in the Dark Strain

Phase 1-1 x 3
Phase 1-2 x 3
Phase 1-3 x 3
Phase 2-1 x 3
Phase 2-2 x 3

Opticamo Vanguard

Helmed Male Samaritan with Las x 3
Helmed Female Samaritan with Las x 3
Helmed Female Samaritan with Grenade Launcher x 1
Female Samaritan and Las x 2
Female Samaritan and Lancer x 1
Male Reaver x 1

"Killed in action while fighting Firebrand rebels in the Salazar interdiction, Niven Banks, Tech Officer 1st class was uploaded to a battlefield transponder. Under severe viral attack, the transponder suffered catastrophic failure while parts of Banks persona were still reaching engrammatic resolution. Safety interlocks failed due to a Firebrand virus in Vanguard systems and Banks resuscitated to re-enter the battlefield while suffering a massive psychotic break. Combat triggered hallucinations led to a lethal friendly fire incident involving nine other Vanguard."

On permanent hazard duty, Niven was "lucky" enough to be doing external maintenance in standard issue space armor when the outbreak occurred. Now armed to the teeth with whatever he's managed to jury rig, Engineer Banks is going to do anything it takes to get off this &@^#(!ing station!

Get Niven for $10! This version of him will only be available during this Kickstarter and at conventions. We have big plans for the character though, expect to see more of him later! Expected to ship March 2013.

Reminder, you don't need this to play the game, but since some of you asked for it....

An extra set of every tile in the game. Since they are double sided, a 2nd set will allow you to lay out map with every single unique design! This pack is just for the really dedicated gamers/hobbyists out there and is not necessary to enjoy the Battle for Alabaster.

Sergeant Ramirez is as tough as they come, and an ace with the Reaver support weapon! Laying down accurate and thunderous suppressing fire is a specialty. Just don't talk back to the sarge! Enlist her for $10. Ships March 2013. Available only on Kickstarter and as a convention promo.

Brilliant, beautiful, and utterly merciless Dr. Hexen Phaedrus is a specialist in nano-technology and neural interface systems. A key researcher at the Alabaster Science facility, she has advanced knowledge of how the Strain nano-phage works, and a desire to see it contained and controlled. Oddly enough, she seems immune to the infection herself, due to safeguard nano-tech she developed. Despite her co-operation and her willingness to accompany the Vanguard through the facility, her directions and information seem almost intentionally confused. Could she be steering the Vanguard towards a brutal confrontation with the Strain? And what purpose would that serve? Unravel her mysteries for $10, ships March 2013 (unpainted and unassembled).

Now Captain Ian Reins, his XO Bella Grange, enforcer Phoenix Corbett, and the mysterious and deadly pilot Delta Chen have found themselves caught between Vanguard forces and slavering mutants intent on infecting them with some kind of nano-virus. Still, the crew has dealt with misfortune before, and they intend to get out of this bit of worry like they always do... intact, alive, and broke."The Captain and his lovely XO will glady report for duty for paltry $20! Like the rest of the promo figures, please limit yourself to 3 each per Biohazard set you're pledging for. Ships in March 2013, unpainted and unassembled.

And if you don't have enough of these things....Each Biohazard set already comes with these, but if you need more, here they are! Ships with the rest of them in March 2013, unpainted and unassembled.

So these bad boys normally sell for $25 in their metal version, and come with one set of arms. Get them now for $15 each with Flamer and Pulse Cannon arms too! So you got 4 arms to choose from. Ships March 2013, unpainted and unassembled.

What the hell? 80 bucks for "50 highly detailed 28mm miniatures" and "50 Scenic miniature bases"?

That is insanely cheap.

....too cheap! I am wanting to see what kind of miniature sprues we are talking about coz those demo minis in the video look freaking awesome, but wouldnt be surprised if they are the metal or resin masters/prototypes of the plastic minis.

Glory is fleeting. Obscurity is forever.

Are the miniatures metal, resin or plastic?

If the minis in the game are the same as the current metal minis this game will be one of the best values on the market.

I have all the current metal minis, and they are NICEEE!!!

But still find it funny you need to pay an additional 25$ for international shipping even if you pledged thousands of dollars heh. Not that it matters if you can invest that much in a single board game.

The whole "Kickstarter" thing is (currently) only available in the US, they most likely got a US "backer" to organise and set up the Kickstarer project. The other thing (I guess) is that if the game can be a success in the US, from a sales perspective, it will be a serious success.

The way to look at this though, if the Kickstarter works out, I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before Studio McVey secures a viable UK distribution through companies like Maelstrom, Wayland and West Wind (possibly).....this Kickstarter just ensures that the original concept has the funded backing it needs to get off the ground.

Man down, Man down....

Wow, literally when I posted this news the Kickstarter just launched, so it had zero backers

Nearly 2 hours later 54 backers and almost $7k out of 20k are in. News travels fast. This will no doubt hit the pledge goal if it keeps this pace. I wonder if McVey has any stretches though.....

I'd like to add to the sentiment that free shipping in the U.S only sucks given that Golem & Studio McVey are U.K based. Maybe they could be persuaded to work something out on an individual basis for people that contact them direct instead of going through kickstarter.

Didn't see where I get the game though, it only discussed the add ons for pledges.

On a lighter note-

Time to back Mike's games. If this is a beginning and expqansions are coming, I can't wait to see more.

Do the current minis at Studio McVey go to this game system as well?

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Anyone remember the good old days when companies that had a well known designer and good art would just come out with a game through normal retail outlets instead of asking for the entire run to be prepaid ahead of time? I don't mind the idea of kickstarter for things that won't or can't come out through traditional channels but this method feels like its just being used by everyone now. I guess I can't blame companies seeing as how they get 95% of the MRSP instead of the traditional 50% through distributor/retail channels.

They're in plastic - according to the comments on Kickstarter:

"@ Avicenna. The plastics will be somewhere in between - not quite as hard as styrene, but close. The same as Privateer Press plastics. The detail is really good and they paint up very well." - Mike McVey

and for those of you who don't like kickstarter, this will come out through regular channels.

this gives chances for feedback, pre-orders, creating a buzz and really, I prefer those things to be community oriented.
remember you just end up paying for expensive marketing through the RRP. this is better

Oddly I was looking at putting them together this morning, so this is actually really good timing. I wonder if they have sorted out the odd scale problem with some of the figures though... some of the earlier models look really odd next to the more recent ones.

I couldn't resist getting the game and the resin Kara...

Feedback, preorders, creating a buzz, being community oriented... are all things you can do normally without kickstarter as companies have been doing that for years. You can disagree (and it's a reasonable viewpoint) but I feel like kickstarter should be used by companies that don't yet have access to traditional outlets or for projects that would be too risky (and therefore not get any backing) via traditional methods. What good does the game do alot of players if the store they play in can't get in on the actions whereas a 6 months ago it would have? This game doesn't need a kickstart as its a prime example of a high-end traditional market release.
