What does GW gain by telling people less? They never have to hear any whinging or doomsaying caused by a product being announced and then delayed.

That alone makes that level of secrecy worth doing.

They should make an effort for it not to be delayed.
Ignoring your customers because you don't like whinging is an absurd idea.
They should be telling us more about what's happening. Not everything obviously but it would be great to see early sculpts and ideas for units.

"... of all time." hey? That might be taking it a bit to far.

Really what they represent is a deep and resounding lack of understanding in both how the Internet works and how they market their own products. With any luck the company they recently hired to handle their web-side interaction will see this improve.

I think the 20 second previews are 20 seconds more than GW ever gave to us since their media blackout started.

It's a start.

One step forward. Two steps back.

But as was said on the first page, it's a "concept" vs "execution" thing. GW is almost always good with the concept side of things, but often terrible when it comes to realising those concepts (subverted: Thunderwolf Cavalry concept vs Thunderwolf Cavalry models).

The teasers themselves are worth nothing IMHO, if they don't put any info. Just the date on the preorder of more minis.

They could try and be more straight forward like "Hey, we got some new stuff to buy from us, so ya'know...buy it!"

Or maybe give us a model to tease us with.

My thought on the teaser? Absolutely worthless. Firstly, it came just 4-5 days before the date on the vid. I'd already put aside my 'hobby budget' for this month for Dropzone Commander which we have known about for months. Also, and this is the clincher, £30 or so for the new Infinity book that has been advertised in the other, similar video from Corvus Belli. The reason? As Erasoketa has said, the company had already laid the groundwork for what is coming, and the teaser video finally just puts a date to that. I think that is why this video from GW has received almost universal admonishment, while the CB teaser video has not.

As already said, the concept is sound but the execution is lacking. Time and a place GW. Said time and place is not 1 week prior to release/preorder.

That should totally work! Movies, videogames, music albums, almost everything these days has previews, official announcements and that stuff. If the product is good, it's going to be sold a lot. If the product is a Pumbagor then maybe you should try harder next time :\

I too would not have seen this teaser if it wasn't for dakka. My first thought on seeing the teaser was confusion. I had to have it explained by somebody who goes through it frame by frame to explain to me what I was looking at. The only thing that stood out to me was the tear and then a date. Even when I looked for the cover art I could barely even see it.

I like that GW is trying but they really need to get some employees that are familiar with these sorts of things to do them instead of asking bob in accounting if he could do a quick video for them.

Worst trailers ever. It really supports the theory that GW execs live in a cave. A cave lined with gold of course.

The videos themselves are fine, GW's secrecy policy like it's the KGB is what irks me. Only knowing about a product a week before it comes out is annoying to say the least.

It costs them sales from me at least, a good example being when I was considering starting a new Eldar army, but found a much better price for an old Eldar Megaforce on Ebay. I went for the Ebay one, and a week later the Dark Eldar megaforce is released. Had I known about it, I would have bought it from GW.

Another thing that makes little sense is unlisting the video. Why the hell do they do that?

While almost everything about these teasers is up to opinion, this is the one part that I find objectively bad. I don't know why you'd hide your promotional material.

Not being a member of Youtube this is pure guesswork, but perhaps this is the only way they can disable the comments. If this is the case, then they're hoisted by their own petard again...

Are you suggesting that the comments would be anything other than complimentary?

Nope, you can disable comments and likes and whatever you want on any videos you upload. I've never done it with any of mine, but you'll find it's very common for political ads and videos that 12 year olds playing Call of Duty who don't want negative comments upload.

I think they're such control freaks that they only want you to find the video by visiting their website.

Great state secret.

They're not the only ones who do this.

There's quite a few places which do this to make it an "incentive" to those who visit/check their sites exclusively.

I haven't been able to embed videos here for some time now, probably something on Youtube's end.

I didn't care for that trailer at all, since it was a minute and a half of text fading in. At least the typical GW teasers have some artwork and visual elements popping up.

You need to keep your customer base informed as much as possible. As early as possible to get them interested in the product.

They are not doing that.

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

Which is where the Forgeworld teaser delivers over the Games Workshop ones. As Brother SRM noted, it's arguably more boring visually, but it confirms some early rumours and gives the date of release well in advance.

*bursts though room with axe* HEEEAAARRRS JHONNY!!!

I personally blame GW's partnership with New line cinemas for their secrecy:

When you look at it GW was once great and wonderful, hell you could get 2 LR's for £15 at one point (in the days of rouge trader I believe) and would show releases like other company's, but when they joined their partnership with New Line it became clear that New Line did not like GW showing what would happen in their movies before the movies were released, so when the hobbit (and im sure a few other people can agree if they have noticed) was announced that New Line probably told them to shut their mouths or they can kiss their partnership goodbye and the closer the release date is coming to the hobbit the more secret GW has been (I think GW can take a hit or two in terms of criticism...except when its about their prices, or past codex's) so this is my opinion on why GW has been ever-so secret, and the only reason why they are being secret with WHFB/40K as well as LOTR is to show New Line that they can keep a secret.

Take my opinion with a bit of salt, but this is just my opinion.

That New Line = secrecy thing, while probably not completely correct, is more or less the reason for the clampdown on rumors and such. They don't want their designs getting leaked ahead of time, and some things from the movies (Smaug, in The Hobbit's case) they really don't want getting out there since those are huge points of hype for the films.
