I like a good game between two painted armies, with lots of mysterious terrain/etc. and fun stuff that can pop up unexpectedly.

BlaxicanX wrote:The fluff.
Nothing about the game itself really interests me. The models+rule books+painting materials are ludicrously expensive, imo, and I hate the fact that dice rolls can potentially screw you over in a game no matter how much better a player you are.
From an actual game perspective, I'll just stick with my Dawn of War 2 collection. 60 bucks and I can play just about any faction and can recolor them all to whatever paint scheme I want with just a few clicks. Also there's almost no luck involved in the matches; if I'm a better I'm just going to win and that's that. Sounds good to me.
But that being said, everyone's got the right to like what they like. As some people mentioned, for them the fun is in the painting, or the converting. So yeah, to each to their own.
So yeah, the fluff. I originally got into WH40K by participating in an online debate about who would win between Star Wars and 40K. Some girl was arguing that the 3E Necrons would solo everything because their ships could fly FTL at combat speeds. Thought that was crap, researched stuff on the Lexicanum, bought the first DoW games not long after that, bought the Gaunt's Ghosts omnibus sometime after that, and here I am a couple years later. WH40K is my favorite source of warporn, and the universe is like every sci-fi/fantasy nerd's dream. It's got a perfect balance of everything. Futuristic sci-fi, fantasy-like swordfights and magic, aliens, visceral combat scenes, epic battles. What's there not to love?
I agree. I will never understand people who like 40k as a game, rather than a setting or a hobby. Honestly, if I ever want something that can truly test my tactical skill while still being fun, I, too, will play DoW. TT is poorly balanced, and tends to favor lists that adhere to a meta, meaning each codex has one good list and a bunch of un-optimized lists that will get smashed to bits by the countless cheeselists. On the other hand, the fluff has that great "no good guys, only different levels of evil" feel, which I love, and, as a history buff, I enjoy the countless references to real countries and people. I understand why someone would find the fluff OTT, but does a good story really need to be completely sensible in terms of real life?

For me the fluff is the best part. I love the setting in all its grimdark, OTT glory. Also as mentioned the historical references are really enjoyable.

For some reason, i saw the topic and thought of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h__uutzcQXc
In all seriousness, the painting and modeling mostly. Fault them all you will on balance and as a game system, there isn't many other companies as easy to come by as GW with quality plastics/beautiful sculps like this, not ones that are so ripe for conversions and customization anyway.

I was an avid ccg player for many years. I played everything from Star Trek, Star Wars, DBZ, and Magic. I wasted thousands of dollars on these games and never knew about wargames.
For a long time friends and I played Dawn of War at LANs and I started getting into the fluff from there. 2 years ago my friends found out about the game and we've all been hardcore into it ever since.
But back on topic, I think the reason I like 40k so much is that it is so very different from any other game I've played. For example someone wins a big ccg tournament. That deck is now all anyone plays, and it all looks the same. With 40k ANY army can win and there are multiple builds for each army. Even if someone played the exact same list as the guy that won last years Ard Boyz it will probably look completely different.
Aside from that I also enjoy that I don't have to buy/trade/sell me stuff off every 3 months just to keep up with changing environments. Yeah, there is a little but not as bad as with ccgs. I also really enjoy the game play and painting, which makes this game so much more customizable and personal.

The fluff. Painting and modelling can be sorta boring, and playing the game is an entirely variable experience, but the fluff always has and always will always be awesome.

Where I come from, the best thing about 40k is the players. I used to play Fantasy exclusively and started playing 40k again for fun. Then the tournament scene for Fantasy was ruined by overly competitive players and so I switched to playing 40k mostly, as did a lot of other players here.

And Magic players seem like recluses or something at my local club..

Have to agree with this....it gives me a great sense of achievement when I finish the last unit of an army and making it fully painted.....until I realise I need something else for the army amd start the process over again.
Another thing I find enjoyment with in 40k is list building, trying to find the right combo of units to make the best list possible and then compare those lists to other people that play the same army(s) as I do.

This is very true, it's extremely satisfying to have a painted army on display, and having something tangible to show for all your hard work in an era of electronic game play and virtual rewards is.... good, just good.

That's another point, it's a nice distraction from virtual gaming (which, I admit, I'm very sucked into).

The best is how you can't quit after spending so much.
But being serious, the fluff, despite being the grand ripoff. I would not buy plastic man of any kind just would play PC strategies if it wasn't for all those great designs with impressive background. That said, there's a possibility that Matt Ward will ruin it in few years time, imo.

For me it has always been about the warriors that I field, and the difference between my three 40k armies. I have two large Astartes armies and a similar sized imperial guard force. All three armies have distic differences between them and requires me to play in different ways.
And the background stire I give them, I always like to have my armies no mater the system well fleshed out. So to sum it up it has to be painting and giving them a worthy background story
