I'm not sure if it REALLY counts, but the Dead Money DLC for Fallout: New Vegas was quite...jarring compared to the others. I mean, Old World Blues is pretty campy and OTT, Honest Hearts is kind of a bland story, and Lonesome Road is nice and dramatic. Dead Money, though, that was an actual survival horror game in Fallout. A choking mist covering the Sierra Madre, "ghost people" that are hard to kill (but will kill you quickly), a freaking eerie soundtrack, a character who had her face cut up and her vocal chords surgically removed...the list goes on.

Oh, and on that same note, pretty much anything Caesar's Legion does in that game. More specifically, what they did in Nipton. Short version: they rounded up everyone in town, gave them all a lottery ticket, and drew numbers. The "lucky losers" were killed instantly, most were crucified, and the second-place winner had his knees broken so he couldn't leave. One lucky man got to leave unharmed, but terrified out of his wits.

Yeah, Dead Money was creepy compared to most everything else in New Vegas, except maybe parts in Lonesome Road. And the part at the end when you
Spoiler:
trap Father Elijah in the Sierra Madre vault
is pretty horrible.

I wouldn't say that counts at all. While it's dark and creepy, it's part of the Fallout series. Fallout is a series with some campy humor counterbalanced by absolutely bleak and terrifying life in a post-apocalyptic hellscape. If anything, Old World Blues is the outlier here, as it's really funny despite some of the darker themes behind it.

The Borderlands series is relatively lighthearted. It's violent, sure, and definitely not a children's game, but much of it is silly and over-the-top with the intent of being comical.

However, Borderlands 2 has some moments that definitely darken the mood, particularly concerning the echo recordings you uncover about Handsome Jack.

Spoiler:

-The Handsome Jack Here quest: He insults, then kills Helena Pierce and has Wilhelm massacre her friends.
-Tiny Tina's Backstory: Jack ordered scientists to inject her parents with Eridium in brutal experiments while she watched. Later you help her take revenge on the man who sold her parents out under the guise of "setting up a tea party."
-Angel: She is Handsome Jack's daughter, who he imprisoned and forced to use her Siren powers to charge the vault key by pumping her full of Eridium against her will.
-Bloodwing: He steals Bloodwing from Mordecai, then injects her with Eridium. The entire fight you are trying to subdue and tranquilize her, but Jack planted explosives in her head, killing her after Mordecai hits her with the tranq dart.

With all the silly enemies, amusing character lines, funny echo recordings, and over-the-top enemy taunts, Handsome Jack brings a serious dark note to an otherwise amusing series, and when you finally kill him, it feels wonderful!

Duke Nukem 3d has some pretty dark moments, that go against the overall gung ho, over the top action movie style in the game.

Like what the aliens do the women.

If Borderlands 2 counts, then I'm putting Bloodrayne 2 here as well. Like borderlands, its a delightfully over the top action game with some fun dialogue and is actually quite colorful.
And then the shroud is activated, and oh boy does it become dark!

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Jesus where do i start. Phoenix wright: the amount of 15 year old girls being invited into offices and being blackmailed into doing what people want? (Kudos goes to gant and ema in the last case of the first game, she looks rather...withdrawn when she comes out..). Plus the "justice in 5 minutes" system or whatever its called, makes you wonder how many innocent people are doing life sentences for nothing..

Another for chrono trigger is after chrono "dies" and you can go back to his house and talk to his mum and she asks just how her little chrono is doing...
Or the fact when that female character (marl?) vanishes near the start she ceases to exist due to you changing the timeline right? She says its a horrifying feeling of nothingness. Now think about how you went through the game rearranging the timeline..all those people...

None are as dementedly sadistic as that bastard and his cold greedy stare.

From to the moon, which I recommend. I also recommend not reading it until actually playing as the main point of the game is it's story which is really quite nice for a change.

I dunno, I think the Phoenix Wright games are silly enough to get away with it. I don't recall the implications of the justice system ever coming out, it's mostly just something that everyone accepts. Considering all the bull- that happens throughout the entire series (like the concept of being guilty until proven innocent, since no case is over until you find the actual killer) I think it's just a matter of suspension of disbelief.

Gameranx wrote:In the Battle.net chat, there used to be a blue gem that adorned the area below the center of the chat window. This gem seems to have been meant to be nothing more than a fancy decoration but the curious thing was that it was clickable and it often gave messages like “Gem Activated” or Gem Deactived” or “Perfect Gem Activated.” Blizzard never revealed what the gem did and so this lead to a tremendous amount of myths and legends about the gem.

First, before we get into those, the Blizzard “Multiplayer FAQ” said this about the gem:

Q: What is the functionality of the Gem in the Diablo II Battle.net Chat room?

A: While we cannot reveal the purpose or function of the Gem in the Diablo II Battle.net Chat room, we can say that it is working correctly and has more than exceeded our expectations. Also, Blizzard employees cannot confirm or deny any rumors regarding this Gem.

These comments ran a whole gamut of possibilities. For example, some players attributed clicking the jewel and activating it perfectly to finding gems or gem shrines. Another player swore it said, “Moooooo!” when they clicked on it 286 times and then found a gem shrine.

Other players believed that it was a means to activate chat filters for curse words. Other people (testers for Diablo 2) speculated that the gem was a way to open up a trade window. Still others swore they heard from blizzard employees that the gem didn’t do anything.

Eventually, Blizzard added this to their multiplayer FAQ:

Q: I want to know what the Gem does in the Diablo II Battle.net chat room, and don't tell me you can't say -- just tell me what it does!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A: After a solid year of silence, we just can't keep the secret anymore. The long awaited answer to one of the most burning questions about Diablo II is simple: It does what it does. When you click on the Gem, it works perfectly every time, and that is what we have always said. To paraphrase Sigmund Freud, "Sometimes a Gem is just a Gem"!

Wow...kind of a dick move, really.

Although I still don't get the Irisu Syndrome thing. What exactly happens? All the article has is a link to a video and a place to play the game.

Edit: Just read through the whole list. So apparently a rare mob spawn in Mists of Pandaria warranted its own little section, but nothing about Ben Drowned from Majora's Mask? Silly.

Portal and Portal 2 started to really creep me out after a while. Especially portal 2. When you start walking through the old facility you start to feel very, very alone. I got so creeped out after a while I turned on all the lights back on lol.

Also LIMBO looks like it might be a light hearted game on the surface, but it's not, to say the least. There is one part where you have to drag a corpse across a pond to use it as a "bridge", for instance.

Doshin the Giant is a fairly freaky game, it's all cutesy and light-hearted, but surreal enough to make the game a little bit wierd... got it with my GameCube way back when.

To be fair, the entire game is some wierd-acid-trip made into a video game, especially when you turn into Jashin...

I always joke with my brother "Hey, for a Kids Game Phoenix Wright sure does have a lot of MURDERS" (pretty much every single case involves a murder or death)

Also you find that concept of "Guilty until proven innocent" silly? In fact that is actually very much based on the Japanese System of Justice.

You know, for a kids game!

Speaking of Phoenix Wright, Marvel Vs Capcom has its share of disturbing. Yea yea its all "Super Heroes" so its expected but still....

Nemesis turning into his tentacle Beast Mode and "consuming" whoever he grabs
Dormammu teleporting you to his home dimension and crushing you like a grape
The end boss in MvC2 Abyss who goes from an armored figure, to a man sized spirit, to a giant red liquid beast that could very well be blood or something
Several people abusing the camera man when they win (Rocket Raccoon brings out a friggin Knife to the poor man while Super Skrull breaks the camera)
MANY people's beginning and end quotes (especially Ghost Rider who tells pretty much everyone to go to Hell, even the Sun God Amaterasu)
