When I was around 12, I got to play Dawn of War: Dark Crusade at a party at the house of my parent's friends. Imperial Guard vs. Orks on a snow map.

Bought Dark Crusade, played it for about a year, then found out there were models.

Walked into the local GW and bought Battle for Maccrage. I have been hooked ever since.

Back in... uhh... I guess it would be grade 8, a few of my friends were really into the LoTR game. That got me ensnared by GW, and once I was in I got a copy if white dwarf, noticing the other fantasy and the cool sci-fi range. Then I decided to go out and give it a try and bought the Battle for Maccarage starter set (it was the SM vs. Tyranid starter for 4th, nowhere near as good as Black Reach (probably the best collection of units) or DV (the best models), but it was enough to get me hooked (seriously though, Maccarage gave you nothing. Literally what you got from the set was one tac squad with a flamer/missile launcher, a small squad of termagaunts, a small squad of genestealers, some spore mines (YAY SPOREMINES...) and some mediocre terrain).

Put simply I enjoyed this game so much that I wanted to get in on the fun as much as possible. About a thousand dollars later I've almost got a 5000pt army of ultramarines, a warlord titan and I've been loving every minute of it.

I suspect a lot of people tried getting into the tabletop version after playing the videogame, but few seem to have been impulsive enough to spend the kind of cash I did on it.

So, I had spotty experience with modelling and wargamming as a kid. I used to paint model airplanes, and my father used to play Battletech with a group of gaming friends that would rotate house to house.

Then, in middle school, I got into MTG when it first came out. The main problem was that all of my friends' parents made more money than my dad did, so they were able to buy individual cards to make strategies while I was just sort of stuck with the booster packs. At some point, I learned about 40k, a game where there were set rules, so that rich people couldn't just destroy poorer people. There was a points limit, and you could play with a points cost equal to the person who had the fewest minis, and you had a codex system that offered you the ability to do what you want, but kept things fair.

Around this time, for reasons I'm not sure of, I also played a few games of BFG. I saw a random mini in the store and asked what it was. They said it was an epic-scale wraithlord. It was around then that I bought my first 40k mini - an eldar vyper, and the rest is history.

On or around 1997 when I was just a little green mushroom (actually, I was a space elf, then a Wood elf, then a high elf, then a dark elf before I joined da Waaaagh) I walked by the GW store in Square One, Mississauga. The first thing I remember seeing are those monopose skinks they had in plastic.

@Soo'Vah'cha: You might want to remove that second pic - it does violate the "no profanity" rules of posting on Dakka, after all (and do it before the mods notice and do it for you).

Granddad was a wargamer - napoleonics - was my first exposure to it.
I got into WW2 around the age of 16 or so with some friends (demo game at a convention). This led to moderns (late 80s cold war period) and then I found the RT rulebook and the RTB001 space marine figures.

RT combined aspects of my favourite SF stories into one new melange. From there, I was hooked.
It's been a long strange 25 years since.

I was into Warhammer Fantasy back in the 90s. When we where lurking at our usual FLGS, we spotted the new box of the 3rd edition (I think - the one with the red and black marines). We all jumped ship in a blink. I started collecting ultra smurfs and Eldars (I still love the eldar dreadnoughts...).

20 years later (1 year ago), moving to Le Mans, I discovered an old eldar walker in a box (the old ones, with tiny heads that looked really ridiculous). I also found my whole squad of swooping hawks and a smurf apothecary. The next weekend I was in the local store, discovering the new plastic range. I think I spent a whole month salary that day, buying everything the 14 year old nerd in me would have liked 20 years before.

This is the best description on the 40k atmosphere ever.

Wing Commander

My year 4 primary school teacher. He'd have little dioramas on display on shelves above his desk, mostly of WHFB, Elves... I think. One day he brought in a massive dragon and the whole class was like After staring in wonderment at that for a couple of weeks I finally stayed behind and asked him about it (properly, not just "Wow cool dragon, sir! Where d'you get it?", but about the actual hobby), he looked at me and smiled and took a WD magazine out of his draw. "Here, take it. I've got loads" he said.

Again I was like I took it home and read it cover to cover about a dozen times. I remember it had Space Hulk in it, which hooked me instantly as I was/am a massive Aliens fan. After than I started buying WD regularly until me and a couple of school friends all decided to get into collecting/gaming together. 3rd Ed had just dropped so I fell in love with the Templars, one friend went Orks and another went SM (can't remember the chapter, I think it was either Ultras or a home-brew). After that the LotR thing exploded, of which I was/am also a massive fan. I watched Fellowship over and over and over when it came out, and when GW released their LotR line, I dove straight in and started collecting. I got the starter set with Moria goblins, Attack at Weathertop and a bunch of Uruk-Hai.

From there I've continued to read WD and a bunch of BL fiction, I'm still making my way through the pile of books that are building up. I don't have much time/money for the models anymore, and I'm waiting for that ever-elusive disposable income to appear before I start collecting seriously again. One day, one day...

Been Around the Block

Back in high school and college, I made friends with a small group that played 2nd Edition. I wanted to play, but 3rd edition was right around the corner. I waited for that, got hooked, and played with that group, even recruiting a few more in the process, until right around 4th edition, when the group broke up as we mostly moved away to carry on with our lives.

I came back to the hobby around the time of the 5th edition Necron codex, as they've been one of my favorites since their original white dwarf army list. I bought some models and books but didn't play because the 5th edition rules didn't do a lot for me. With 6th coming out, I actually like the rules better now so, I may try to get back into playing and actually finishing my armies. I always had a bad habit of jumping from one army to the next on a whim.
