Well, the front page has been basically the same stuff for the last few days, and I haven't seen a thread like this in some while, so I figure it'd be fun for all of us.

Like the title says, I'd love to hear why/how Dakka got into 40k, Minis, wargaming, just the hobby in general, and what made 40k stand out for you. I gather it'll be quite interesting hearing everyones' different reasons that all kinda brought us to the same thing.

I'll start.

Girlfriend at college far from home, so I knew I needed something to keep me occupied when I was home on break (besides other girls). Ended up recalling a hobby store one of my MTG-playing friends brought me into a few years back, and remembered the cool little models they had on display, and the remarkable gameboards they would play on. Decided I should give it a look, bought a sentinel and some troops from ForgeWorld, and the rest is history (including the girlfriend ). I love 40k's models, and the fact that it's always fairly easy for me to find games and people to play wherever I go, which is why it's the miniature-game I've stuck with.

My first experience with 40k was when I went to the FLGS to pick up a new DnD book and seen my High School World History teacher buying a tactical squad of space marines. I thought it was interesting, but didn't really delve into it head first then.

Then a few years later, I'm working in an HVAC repair front office as dispatcher and my coworker was bringing in several of the books to read over lunch/breaks. One thing lead to another and I decided to try getting into it. I don't work there now but since my marine collection has grown from 15 marines (tac squad and 5 in the paint set) to over 4000 points and nearing a full battle company + some support units.

Haven't regretted a moment of it. Well... except maybe the cost, there is always that...

Hmm one of the boys let me paint/ruin on of his models, and a few weeks latter I went into a GW and got a farseer to paint.
Why there I had issue with some clothes and a chair, much embarrassment and I think I screem but I was given a battle force to cheer me up

Building it take me the next few days but I have been slowly building all since then.

Back in the early 90s I was 10-12 years old. Friend let me borrow some CDs. One of them was Bolt Thrower. I thought the cover looked awesome. Then I was at the local hobby store and noticed the 40K boxes and made the connection. That was my first encounter.

A year or two later my brother and I got a game called Battle Masters for christmas. For those of you unfamiliar with the game, its a stripped down starter version of WHFB for kids. Loved that game to death, without knowing it was Warhammer.

Finally, I watched the trailer for the Space Marine game. I thought it looked absolutely insane. I downloaded the demo and I was instantly hooked. Went on the GW site, started lurking forums, went out and bought AoBR, and quickly blew thousands of dollars. No end in sight!

Played Hero Quest with friends in gradeschool.

Went to a friends house in highschool who had Orks, Eldar, Space Wolves and several codexs.

I saw Chaos and wanted to start. Everyone told me to wait for 3rd Edition only a month away.

Bought the 3.0 Chaos codex. First model owned and painted was Kharn.

Soon I got into regular marines. Bought a White Dwarf. Had a new store listed in the RT pages.

New store was Dakka Dakka Games. 2 minute drive. I walked in the 11th day they were open.

Been buy and collecting ever since.

I had a couple of buddies in my weekly gaming group that were always talking about Warhammer Fantasy, and while what I saw at conventions turned me off to the hobby, I knew I could trust these guys, so I asked what it was about. They invited me over not for WHF, but WH 40k, which they had just started in order to break the monotony of WHF battles between the two of them.

I went over and watched the Dark Eldar and Imperial Guard duke it out, and I was intrigued by the armies, the painting, and the tactical game play. The next day I went down to one of the LGS and asked one of the guys behind the counter what he thought about 40k. He happened to be a GK player, and gave me the run down of the different armies and how they worked. I was intrigued by the story behind the GKs and after looking at the army options, decided I would play Grey Knights. It just so happened one of the customers in the store was looking to sell a small unpainted GK force he didn't want anymore, so I bought that and brought it to play the next week at my buddies house.

Been doing it for 2 years now, my GK army has grown from a measly 500 points to just under 5,000. My buddies moved on from IG and DE to Eldar and Nidz, and our group now has 2 Ork players and a Space Wolf player. Its been great, and I can't wait to start a second army myself!

My older brother bought the 4th ed starter set thingy. He gave me all of the Space Marines in the set because, in his words, "Space Marines suck." Because he had Tyranids, I wanted Tyranids, so on a whim I bought a shitton of Tyranid Warriors. Since I had put money into the hobby I wanted something out of it, so I started actually playing the game and reading about the setting.

Kinda a convuluted story.
First I am/was a massive star wars fan, so when a sports collectible store started seeling SW minis i scooped them up(Star Wars Miniatures was the sports store first sale. I played forever with my friend. Then i discovered my FLGS sold them in more variety. so i bought from there, I got one of the bigger 22$ ones, and nothing but copies. So i got pissed and left the game.
Now this is where my quest to find out what 40k was. I remember reading what 40k was from halo, i saw a friend play, looked cool. I loved TTWG but SW mini's screwed me over.
So the FLGS owner, 5 years ago, showed me the basics of what i needed for it(60$ AOBR, Glue and clippers) and i got my mom to buy it.
Then i too a hiatus for a year or so when i discovered WOW, got bored of that and went to 40k, now that i play every week, I'm hooked.

Well this is going to date me, but I first started with the old ps1 game Space Hulk and loved the premise. Then I found the models at a local hobby shop and painted a few and just kept them around for a while until, oh..twelve years later I realised that it was a miniatures game.

Saw my friend with space marines when I was about 13. Saw another with tyranids. Went down GW, and saw they had normal dudes who the clerk assured me could kill mighty genetically engineered super humans and big scary space frogs with scythes.

I was sold.

It was kind of a long descent. In 7th grade I became friends with this kid and we would chill at his house sometimes and his brother had some old metal Steel Legion models and a few basilisks. I never took much note, just sort of thought they were cool action figures. Then a couple years later me and this other kid had English together and during a project in the comp lab he showed me the GW website. I took a look at orks and liked them, so I bought a boyz squad. They were meh and I only had crappy paints so I sort of ignored it for a while. Then I saw the pic of Horus standing over the dead Sanguinius and looked into BA for a while. These got a few squads to their name before I picked up Angry Marines for a little. But I really started when my (now really good) friends started a pre heresy campaign and I became, ironically enough, the Sons of Horus

To be honest, I don't actually remember what got me into 40k. I remember back in early 2005 when I was in Primary School, a friend of mine by the name of Robert was majorly into the hobby and he would occasionally bring his WHFB army books into school such as his Hordes of Chaos (yes, when it was Daemons and Warriors in one) and Orcs and Goblins books. I fell in love with them, presented them to my mom and the following Easter I found a few goodies hidden under my pillow. I got into the hobby properly in 2006 after purchasing the December 2006 White Dwarf (with which I have every single one up to now) and I began looking at Space Marines and such so actually yes, I think that's what got me into the hobby. I began with WHFB and Beasts of Chaos (back when it was not Beastmen) and a little later during September 2007 I received my first 40k models in the form of the newly released Chaos Space Marines. Since then WHFB has taken a back-seat whilst 40k remains my love, but, I want to return to WHFB at some point.

I used to play heroscape, and I loved the "figures" without knowing what miniatures were. Then I started to play D&d, where I used some of the heroscape minis along with regular D&d minis. I knew that there were metal and plastic D&d mini's you could paint, but couldn't find any. I found a box of warhammer fantasy orcs and thought they were for d&d. I assembled and painted them and loved it. I bought some more fantasy orcs and soon had an army. Then after about 6 months I realized there were rules for the game and that no one in my area played it. I knew though, that people played 40k. Still liking orcs, I bought some 40k orks and started them. The rest is history...

What brought me to imperial guard was memories of playing with plastic army men. I'd take those any day over the overly powerful robots and superheroes (space marines).

My cousin used to play WHFB when I was a kid, and I always thought the models (particularly the beastmen) were awesome. Several years later when I was in middle school, one of my friends mentioned getting into 40k. I tried to convince my buddies to go with fantasy instead, as I had never up to that point been a huge sci-fi fan, but got out-voted, so I picked up a box of Chaos marines, Kharn and some berzerkers.

I agree 100% and also, a friend showed me his Chaos Space Marines and I wanted to see what the other races were like so I went with my Nids in all their alien-esque glory! Beforehand, I'd made one model, which was a 1/72 scale Northrop F-5A Freedom Fighter, which was fun to make.
