You make it sound like it's something to be ashamed of, when, judging by most of the replies on this thread, it quite obviously isn't.

Agreed. The blessing of the internet is a double edged sword. This thread will be healthy for all those within it so long as it remains as open as it has been so far. The moment judgements are passed, it becomes as unhealthy as shouting personal conditions and disabilities in the middle of a street someplace.

I don't think the caution was leveled at the potential for trolls here, but the possible ramifications you might face if the wrong person linked your words to your own identity. There's a very good reason medical (including mental health) records are private.

People with many different forms of mental disorder are often very creative and intelligent in private aspects of their life or places where they feel 'safe'. It's an outlet for emotions that they usually cannot deal with or express properly. I once knew a guy who had Down Syndrome but he was the best Street Fighter player you'd ever seen. It was a joy watching him play that game. He was a true Master. Creativity something that you can control and take pride in unlike other areas where you may feel a loss of control or even shame due to the stigma society places on those who aren't 'normal' (whatever that fething means). I think that creativity an be an extremely healthy thing for someone with a mental disorder.

I think it is also for the same reason that some people seem to lose it when faced with criticism of their work or when playing a game. I imagine a lot of people who are described as 'TFG' when playing, only act that way because they experience a temporary loss of control in one area of their life that is usually completely theirs. It's something to think about next time you're facing TFG across the table. Mental health does not excuse bad behaviour, throwing models, swearing etc everyone is responsible for their own actions, but before retaliating it's worth thinking about TFG and what they might be going through, and maybe biting your tongue and walking away instead of having a go.

I myself do not have any mental disorders that I know of, however my fiancée has been on medication most of her life to control her moods and anger. She is an extremely creative painter (of pictures) when she wants to be and can draw fantastically.

Why not? It's anonymous anyways.

If people aren' t ashamed of making various things public, that's great, but I think the problem is that most people don't realize the extent of what they're doing.

Even if you think it's not a problem, you should still think twice about posting personal stuff like this. You don't want people you know only slightly well seeing that you have had problems with depression and that you play wargames...

As a discussion grows in length, the probability of a comparison to Matt Ward or Gray Knights approaches one.

And I never mentioned Autism in this discussion. Let me guess who this is directed at.

Well if you mean it as a warning, you need to work on conveying tone more carefully via text, so as not to be misjudged.
I'm a very open person about my mind though. I don't go shouting it from the rooftops, but I'm not ashamed when anyone finds out. I'm always willing to talk to people about, explain more about what it means, point out some misconceptions they may hold. In my opinion, this is the best way for me to deal with it, hiding who you are and being ashamed can only lead to things getting worse.
No one should be ashamed about what they are, that attitude needs to change. Some people just need to do a little bit of reading.

Emperorlives wrote:I don't think autists are very much accepted in the wargaming community plus they're probably not very good painters anyways

And that's the kind of ignorance that makes people ashamed of who they are. The first part of that sentence is pretty ignorant, the second part is just down right offensive.

Probably work

A lot of times I listen to music or other media that is reprehensible. Bitter songs or elements illustrating counterculture dogma that is otherwise haunting or depressing. Reminding me how dark parts of the world I will never experience are, such that I might always keep them in mind when my world view is brought into question.

All I can say is that at least her underlying politics at least appear to coincide with my own.

Don't feed the trolls guys... hit the yellow triangle if you see one and let us deal with it please. I just spent a lot of time cleaning up this thread, don't make a mess of it again by quoting and discussing an obviously disgusting and reprehensible troll post. Ignore it then hit the button, especially with this kind of stuff I hope you can see why it is better to not call attention to it. Your help is appreciated.

Now, back on topic, and respectfully please, this is a touchy subject and this thread is teetering on a lock as it is...

Cheers,

MT11

I have autism, which I have learned to hide well enough to pass as merely socially awkward. Though I do suffer from having no motivation to socialize, my idea of a good time is being alone.

Being a bit of a shut in, my parents forced me to either find a hobby or a sport. That is how I found this hobby which I have loved ever since.

Well said.

Back on topic:

To qualify my above post a bit, I don't actually think there is an abnormal abundance of people with mental disorders within the Wargaming community. I think that if it were looked at statistically you'd find a similar trend amongst most creative activities such as gaming, music, art and even competitive sports. Any topic that allows a person to have some control in an area that can be separated from the rest of their life will be appealing to someone who might not be able to deal with other areas of their life so easily. It's unfortunate that some people might never find an outlet that gives them some calm.

Artists have always been disproportionately afflicted with mental disorders, particularly depression and addictive personalities. It's something about reduced dopamine production or somesuch, from what I've read on the matter; their work triggers the release of dopamine, thus treating the problem to some extent, and leading them to get a whole lot more out of it than most people, for whom it's only an arduous task with a disproportionately low material reward.

I have Asperger's Syndrome, and I'm not afraid to admit it. We live in our heads sometimes, and that's where a lot of my fluff comes from. Through my fluff I try to bring my readers into the world that exists in my head, unfortunately my meager skills with the pen and even worse skills with the brush mean that I just can't quite show you the exact vision I have of the world in my head.
If you will excuse me for a moment I'd like to also psycho analyze myself for a moment: you may notice that a lot of my fluff involves humans being transformed into something else through various means. I think this is because deep down I don't quite feel like I truly fit in human society. Also I seem to change my interests every month or so, and I feel like my life is in a constant state of change. Thus my internal predilection for change is reflected by a physical change in my characters.

My doctor made the joke that, when you have enough money, any mental disorder is called eccentric.
