No one has yet mentioned Breaking Bad or Dexter?!?

Breaking Bad is fantastic, and I'm amazed I forgot to mention it, but in the case of Dexter, season six was so awful that it seriously marred the entire series.

Also adding another one, House of Cards.

How come no one's suggested Farscape yet?
Admittedly, I've only watched the first three seasons at the moment, but those have been well worth the price of admission.

DS9 immediately.

Then Babylon 5.

People will try to pick fights about whether or not DS9 stole B5's series bible, but it's irrelevant, both shows are excellent and completely worth your time.

I'm assuming Still Game isn't available in the US? ( and it definitely Is NOT on youtube)

For the past couple of years, the shows I've been looking forward to watching on TV are:

Game of Thrones (may be awkward to watch with family)
Castle
Lost Girl (may be awkward to watch with family)
The Almighty Johnsons
Arrow (basically a tv equivalent of Chris Nolan's Batman films)
Spooks/MI:5 (depending on the country you're in)
Battlestar Galactica

A few others I liked were cancelled before their time, most notably:
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

I'll also chime in on Community. If you like it, you'll love it.

You seem to enjoy Stargate, and I haven't seen a very short lived series mentioned yet (apologies if I missed it)- Stargate Universe. There are only 2 seasons, but I really enjoyed them.

Archer is awesome.

If you enjoy fairy tales, and I mean really enjoy fairy tales, then Once Upon a Time can be wonderful. My best advice for it is to watch it slowly. It takes the mind a little bit of time to adjust to its meandering pace, and intricate plotting. Digesting the episodes really improves the experience.

On the other hand, the first time you watch Archer, watch as many as possible in a row. You have to let go conventional logic and let the show's logic take-over. It is internally consistent, but outwardly quite insane.

Breaking bad, got into the first series last night and took to it instantly.

Someone earlier mentioned Band of Brothers and the Pacific, they're pretty good to watch too.

If you're into old comedies then there's Fawlty Towers, I enjoyed that personally.

To be fair, Walking Dead is less about the Zombies and more about the relationships between the characters. The odd zombie fuelled mayhem episodes are few and far between the character episodes.

Got to admit, I won't change the channel when it's on. Pretty standard sitcom fare, but it definitely has its moments.

I'll agree with that. Went downhill after season 4 in my opinion.

Also Brickleberry, its modern Shakespearean drama set in the heady heights of a national park. Its a love story.

Manimal was awesome too. I don't think there's been a drama quite like it.

And who can forget Quark in Space. I know I can't. The thrilling adventures of an interplanetary dump truck are just...epic!

Manimal was funny - I remember seeing him turn into a snake to pull a woman out of quicksand. I always wondered what the snake held on to.
He got trapped in a room by the villains in one ep. They opened the door later to get him later and he was a water buffalo.

He also turned into a panther rather a large amount...

Dexter is still watchable but it has definately gone off the boil and the end of season 6 was a step too far. I'll still watch season 7 though.

I can only echo that if you've not watched Breaking Bad yet then you must stop at nothing to rectify this.

Aside from Game of Thrones, nothing else on TV currently comes close.

Breaking Bad is too heavy for me day in and day out.

Instead you should watch Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. Its a medical show. Very realistic.

COMPLETELY agree with this. It's an amazing show, but I'm only half way through season 3...It's just so intense alll the time. It's almost stressful to watch

Someone mentioned Rome. I'll second that, and say that yes, it is basically GoT in Rome, but the standard of quality is higher across the board: the sets are better, the cinematography and lighting is better, the wardrobe is better, the acting and writing are better... GoT basically just coasts on being ASoIaF, wanders off on its own in season two and fails to live up to its source material, horribly, but is certainly getting back on the right track in season 3.

For a full list:
Rome
GoT
The Wire
The Sopranos
Archer
The Venture Bros
Drawn Together
Strangers with Candy (parody of after school specials; extremely nineties; co-written and produced by, and starring, Stephen Colbert)
Always Sunny in Philadelphia (it's been circling the drain for a few seasons now, but the first four or five are gold)
Ugly Americans
Futurama

In that order.
