Can't really pin it down to a favourite:

- The World Engine, because an entire chapter going on a suicide mission on a deathstar manned by terminators, ending up with just a handful of mortally wounded men going "yippee ki yay, motherfether" and blowing it all to Terra.

- The battle of Calth in "Chapter's Due". Iron Warriors, traitor techpriests and mercenaries against Ultramarines, Inquisitors, Skitarii, PDF, Weapon servitors and most of all, Raven guard who make the ultramarines look like children at everything they do. Best part was how a Captain, Sergeant and a fething Techmarine were in the same room as the legendary Telion, and they made him jump.

And now for the Tanith section:
- The defense of the manse in Straight Silver. Some Pavlov's house gak going on there, a dozen men against an army.

- Any battle involving Mkvenner or Mkoll, especially In The Guns of Tanith, where he runs out of ammo whilst outnumbered three against several dozen, and just starts beating the gak out of anyone who gets within 3 feet of him, and then acts like nothing happened when relieved.

- Similar to the manse, the fighting towards the end of Only in Death, where the beleaguered, exhausted, outnumbered defenders are running out of ammo, and there's that massive clusterfeth going on up top, and that clusterfeth at the gate, and generally everyone is wounded and resigned to death, but determined to take as many fethers down with 'em.

- The one platoon of guardsmen under Sergeant Blane in First and Only, who held off a thousand heavy infantrymen with fifty light infantrymen, inflicting over 300 casualties before it got to hand-to-hand, buying enough time for their allies to take them from behind and crush them.

I do so love a good last stand

The Third War of Armageddon.

A great war between the forces of humanity and the Orks, featuring a number of interesting battles, sub-factions and persona. Most of all, it wasn't one of the usual "X goes there and roflstomps Y" that I feel the franchise is plagued from, but rather an intense conflict whose outcome was undecided for many months, and which featured both awesome as well as tragic incidents. The Celestial Lions being stabbed in the back and facing extinction, the Flesh Tearers finally exposed for what they are, the death of Captain Tycho, the massacre at Gaius Point, the last stand of the defenders of Hive Tempestora ...

That is a proper battle for me.

There isn't much about it as far as I know, but the Battle of Tallarn sounds pretty awesome to me.

How much of it remain canon is anyones guess, but in the original Codex Titanicus supplement (which covered both Adeptus Titanicus 1 and Space Marine 1st edition) all of the short stories in the Imperial section were on Tallarn. It's over 20 years old and I still regard it as one of the best '40k' things GW has ever published! Tho more correctly Tallarn was a campaign rather than a battle - it lasted 2-3 years (by then fluff at least).

1st Arm war
- SW, IG,GK and I vs Angron
- SW and IG vs GK, RH and I

ADB: I showed the Wolves revealing the key weakness at the heart of the World Eaters; showing Angron that his Legion was broken and worthless compared to the others; that he was the one primarch who couldn't trust his own warriors, and that they didn't care if he lived or died; showing that loyalty to brothers and sons is the heart of success for the Legiones Astartes, to the point even Lorgar makes a big deal out of saying the World Eaters and their primarch were massively outclassed by Russ, and Angron was too stupid to see the lesson Russ had sacrificed time, sweat, and blood, to teach. We're talking about a battle the Wolves won, by isolating the enemy general through pack tactics, and threatening to kill him, without a hope of defending himself. It was a balance, 50/50 - Angron overpowered Russ, and the Wolves were losing ground to the World Eaters; but Russ and his warriors had Angron by the balls, and barely broke a sweat. They won, no question. Lorgar even says: "The Wolves won, meathead."

Dorn won’t help you either. He’s too busy being the Emperor’s groundskeeper, hiding behind the palace walls. The Wolf is too busy cutting off heads as our father’s executioner, while the Lion holds on to his secrets, and has no special fondness for you. Who else will come? Not Ferrus, certainly. Nor Corax either. Even as we speak, I suspect he flees for Deliverance. Sanguinius?’ Curze laughed cruelly. ‘The angel is more cursed than I. The Khan? He does not wish to be found. So who is left? No one, Vulkan. None of them will come. You are simply not that important. You are alone.’ Konrad Curze to Vulkan

Another battle I like: The Octarius war. The two most numerous forces in the galaxy smashing head on again and again at each other and whomever wins will be so much stronger than they were when they entered it that it could be considered Kryptmann's greatest mistake.

- Second and third wars for Armageddon.
- The War in Heaven
- Tau vs. Hive Fleet Gorgon
- Hive Fleet Behemoth vs. Macragge
- An epic clash in the novel Titanicus between three Titans, where it's two smaller Titans against one enormous Chaos one. One of the Imperial Titans is badly damaged yet still manages to survive the clash, and the description of the fight was just fantastic. I was really seeing it perfectly and thought it would make just an amazing scene in a film if it were shown from the ground perspective of a civilian/soldier, like it was in the book.

The opening phase of the battle for Rynns World is always a classic... teaches you to be careful with your surface to space missile inventory

Otherwise I found the battles in Double Eagle particularly engrossing.

I'm primarily an eldar player, but the most interesting battles to me come from the dark eldar codex. The first being Vect luring the space marines to Commoragh and the second being when Rakarth aids the tau.

Also, an honorable mention to the tau vs. hive fleet gorgon.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

There's not a ton of detail about it, but the Dark Eldar scouring of Tau Empire's Rubikon. After realizing Uriek Rakarth had turned there Fire Warriors into grotesques, Urien demands they give him several Etherals or thousands of Fire Warriors. The Tau refuse and send a fleet after the Dark Eldar fleet only to find its a mirage. They return to Rubikon to find Asdrubael Vect and Uriek Rakarth depopulated the entire planet.
