Who is One Direction?

And props to the mom for "tough love". Odd way to air it, not quite right, but at least it proves that some parents still don't accept kids misbehaving this way.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Like I said:

I'm okay with the punishment.

I'm okay with making a note on the sale that this was a punishment for the kid.

I'm not entirely okay with the very vindictive "in your face NAR HAR HAR" allcaps venom and posturing on that public message.

Not necessarily, I mean, tough love does work sometimes. I once worked an entire summer for my dad, and he stilled owed me about two weeks pay when I (very stupidly) decided to imitate his signature on a failed exam. Got busted, and daddy decided to erase that part of the ledger.

Now every time I tell that story people are convinced my dad scarred me for life, but it was a very good lesson ; don't cheat those that owe you, don't bite the hand that feeds you. Gifts are not contractual obligations, that kid will know that now. And hopefully she'll be more careful when she wants to sneak/sleep around.

But did your dad go on a rant in public about it? Obviously not on an ebay or craigslist post, but did he make a huge scene of it in public?

Oh, of course not, I didn't mean to equate that story with what happened to me, just to give an example of unconventional tough love which (I guess) worked, and didn't lead to me hating my dad.

And we don't know much about the kid either, she could be absolutely horrible. I mean, I've had 16ish years old introduce me to their paternal by saying, to their face, ''so, this is x, my c**t of a father.'' And effective punishment does, sometimes, require shaming.

Certainly a point to that, but that is something where we lack context. So it is entirely possible that this action on the part of the parents was works for the kid, but even though I lack parenting experience, I have a hard time seeing any kind of approach that it would work. Shaming is one thing, public shaming is another, but how much of what the parents posted as shaming, and how much was them getting their victory dance in?

We can't know that, obviously, unless more comes out, but to me it is way less the parents trying to teach the daughter a lesson, and more them reveling in it. That said, no context,, so I could be entirely off base.

Quite possibly. It's also the kind of thing you don't want to do with all kids, only those with a certain, hum, capacity for punishment?

Anyway, I wouldn't even have to go down that road, as my hypothetical progeny will definitely have better musical taste, and will definitely be mature enough that I won't bother too much to care about their sex life.

How public is a shaming on Craigslist though?? I mean honestly, unless your name is John Smith, and your Craigslist seller name is JohnSmith123, no one is going to know that it is YOU being punished, unless you are actually one of the parents, or girls involved in the situation.

I didn't realize people considered teens to be so weak all of a sudden that the loss of concert tickets for lying and acting out would scar them for the rest of their lives. It is a strange dichotomy we have going on here where in the suicide thread kids need to toughen up and here where they need to be handled like crystal unicorns.

I find it ironic that the ebay listing's tone is less that of a stern parent delivering a lesson and more that of an angsty teenage girl who wants to "get back" at someone.

Probably not the best way to inspire a sense of maturity in your mewling, one-direction-listening spawn.

I've got no problem with the punishment, or with the mum including a story about the punishment in the seller's description.

But the actual text - that gives the impression of a petulant idiot, not a parent. I mean, the line declaring that they deserve love more than anyone else - that reads like its from a 13 year old's secret diary, not a parent's explanation of why they're punishing their child. Add in the ALL CAPS, repeated punctuation and run on sentences and the tone is that the parent is as childish as their kid.

Admittedly the line about half of those kids being conceived through sneaking off was pretty good though.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

While I agree on premise that it could have been worded better, I don't get 'petulant idiot' so much as 'angry and hurt and letting emotions take to much control'. Parents are people to, and kids will drive you mad at times. One doesn't have to be an idiot to let your kid get to you, unless we define idiot as anyone who has ever raised a child, ever.

I think the parent is justified entirely.

I mean hell, she had her FRIENDS prank call her parents and try to stop the sale of the tickets? When you get to that level of bratty, you deserve to be shamed in full view of the world.

For some reason, I highly doubt this is a normally well behaved child.

Absolutely. Thing is, while I don't think its reasonable to expect parents to never get emotional or hurt by their children, I do think it is reasonable to expect parent's to avoid making their parenting decisions while they're in those moments.

Writing a rambling screed like the ebay ad sounds like a parent who is still emotional about the issue, or perhaps more likely a parent who acts like that most of the time.

They pretended to sleep at each other's houses in order to attend a party at a boy's house. That isn't good behaviour, but it's pretty normal.

Now, I'm not saying the kid shouldn't be punished exactly like she was, but let's not going inventing a narrative about a wildly out of control kid here.

Yup. Because I don't get a big ol' "punish those kids" stiffy I am a contrarian.

Because, y'know, I agreed with most of the punishment until it became a public spectacle. I'm very contrarian.

Not exactly fraud-working for family doesn't meet the same restrictions (under the table pay is common) and is more lenient in the US (ten year old kids can work in family restaurants here and get "paid"). It's more a "you help the family out, you'll get a "monetary thank you". Here, his actions removed the monetary thank you.

Well, in the Dakka OT-tradition of blaming the victim...

Wait, who's the victim, the parents, the kid? wait, it was the kid's fault, is the kid still the victim? are the parents the victim? if the kid, then the victim is already to blame, if parents, wait, they didn't really do anything to blame them for.

error, does not compute, cannot determine blame....
