For feths sakes.. it would be nice to have one thread without someone feeling the need to troll. It's pathetic.

Did I say something? Cause that's a somewhat harsh response to a person who's merely sharing a magazine cover that he likes, I feel?

Maybe this is the first rerelease of the SM codex since he started playing or something, so he naturally loves this one more than the others because it shows whats new about his favourite army? There are a lot of reasons someone may pick their 'favourite cover', since that was the question, not 'what is the best cover art'.

I agree with Brook (I think it was brook), the BFG and Inquisitor covers are just the best.

There's some great art on these that really make it look like a fantasy magazine. Then there's that cover, three figures posed on a rock.

It has no soul and was made with the minimum of effort.

I believe a fat guy was just referring to the covers that featured LoTR, so the ones with photos of the actors from the movies. I guess in comparison to some of the artwork that had come before it was pretty dull, but considering the popularity of the films (and how many miniatures GW was selling on the back of it at the time), you can understand completely why it was done.

Although if I'm honest my fave GW cover isn't even a White Dwarf, its this one. Because... reasons.

Idea from a recent thread conversation. My personal preference is the older covers, drawn art not photos ahem...

The crazy space marine battles or the barbarian battling through a dull lit dungeon! The new photo covers just don't cut it in my book!

What do you think, what is your favourite cover?

My favorite, first glimpse of LOTD.

WOW that's such a freakin' cool image, really reminds me of the fantasy book covers when I was much younger (and I'm only 25... )

I wish I was able to buy these WD when I was a kid, the ones you are showing are just flipping fantastic! These new ones with the painted minis can't hold a candle to them, damn!

Yes right, I read an interview with the artist once where he was quite open about the scene in the movie that formed the basis of the one marine.

Does nothing to detract from it though..

3 ages(and the aftermath). Not just the war of the ring(event not game.)Sure its FOCUSED entirely on LOTR era but there is nothing that stops you from doing the fall of gondolin for example.Except the fact that every body hates and refuses to play it because 'we stole loads of WD' in the days when it was good.Around 10 months give or take. After LOTR,codex and army book releases became way more often(almost doubled).During that time we probably brought 100s to 40k and fantasy since LOTR was produced by the same company. When it comes to gameplay our games are shorter.we don't need to roll 3 dice to see if we wound with a arrow we need 1(unless the foe is in cover but then you shoot someone else anyway)we can have one moria goblin spearman kill 4 khazad guard.Very heroic. Can 1 spess muhrine do that?I don't think so because you can't tell who kills what 90% of the time.Ungrateful **sterds.

I would never had heard of GW, and gone on to play Warhammer 40K were it not for LOTR. And to this day LOTR is still my favourite universe and game.

Getting the licence for LOTR allowed GW to cash in on the huge LOTR craze and they were able to expand massively and reinvest in their other product lines too. GW wouldn't be as big as they are today without LOTR.

Mmmm mixed feelings here. LOTR was a huge influence on me in cultivating my love of all things fantasy. The associated works created a world deep in history and culture that was at times to me something truly beautiful.

I never have though played or painted the GW game, it just never interested me. Even though as a kid I love LOTR role playing games.

So if a really nice WD LOTR cover attracts a middle earthian to our hobby then that's great. II wouldnt object to that anywhere near as much as 3 hideous models that have no place in the 40k world and are ridiculious to look at and even more ridiculous when it's expained what they are. Armor inside armor, who would do this? Why would you not just make a bigger suit of armor!!!?! Sorry rant endeth
