Here's my list, though I only play games of either 2nd edition, or 4th edition.

-Ultramarines, first army, since 2nd edition
-Chaos, in 2nd edition
-Sisters of Battle, since they came out in 2nd edition
-Necrons, since they came out in 2nd edition when they only had a couple of units
-Kroot Mercs, 3rd/4th edition- Chapter Approved list
-Space Wolves 13th Company , since they came out during the Eye of Terror campaign
-Eldar, since 4th edition
-Legion of the Damned, when they came out in Chapter Approved
-Orks, the newest, using modern models for 2nd edition games

-Also have a Blood Angels Terminator army (Deathwing counts-as) in progress.

- Space Marines, where I switched the chapter twice, (First Ultramarines, then Space Clow- I mean, a horribly painted attempt at a custom chapter, then Salamanders). 5th edition
-Tyranids after that from Hive Fleet Leviathan. 5th edition
- Got Orks off a friend of mine. Might make them metal themed (metal as in, the music). 5th edition
- Bought several codexes before my old local GW closed down for a "40k hibernation" which were Daemons, Tau, Eldar and Necrons.
6th edition except for Necrons and Eldar

I can see it now....Nids are now a collection of autonomous hive fleets there are multiple Hive Minds and they all war with one another in addition to everyone else. They speak to humans using telepathy, and they can now ally with Space Wolves as battle brothers, because reasons.
Tyranids talking to humans would be like you talking to your mashed potatoes or the probiotic in your kiefer drink. It is neither possible nor productive.
Inside my mind I pinched my nipples and savored his bitter silence.

Let's see, I *think* I can list the 40k armies I built in the order in which I got them. But I might be wrong...

Imperial Guard (5th)
Chaos Space Marines (5th)
Orks (5th) (These guys were traded away at some point)
Grey Knights (5th)
Space Wolves (5th)
Eldar (5th; Very small force)
Dark Angels: Deathwing (5th)
Dark Angels: Greenwing (5th)
Tau Empire (5th) (My 2.5k army of these guys really should go in my sig, shouldn't it?)
(5th) (Started with the old book and hated the 5th book so I sold them)

Dark Eldar (5th-6th) (New edition dropped right in the middle of building the army)
Space Marines (6th)
Imperial Guard (6th) (Wanted to revisit my first faction with a completely new reboot now that I'm not as inept with a brush)
Eldar: Wraith Army (6th) (Just started!)

Fantasy is something like:

Bretonnians (8th)
Vampire Counts: Lahmians (8th) (Started with the 7e book, though)
Empire (8th) (Started with 7e book)
High Elves (8th) (7e book, don't have the 8th one yet)
(Insert symbol here) Lizardmen (8th) (Still only have the 7e book)

Back in RT days me and my brother had Space marines and Eldar.
In 2nd ed I got Chaos and Sisters of Battle. My chaos army was a Khorne and Slaanesh army with a ton of berserkers because they were actually good back then. I had a hard time beating the Eldar in 2nd. My space marine chapter was an Ultramarine successor that were red with yellow trim and green helmets. It looked alright. My Chaos guys were all black and brass. Super easy to paint.
When the HH novels came out I got an Imperial Fist army because of the fluff and am expanding on my Sisters. The past two chaos codex's have been boring and not at all what I believe chaos to be. They ignore the legions in favor of scattered warbands with no flavor or individuality. So I don't play chaos anymore, just Sisters and IF.
I was looking to get Tau but waited to see how the Codex was. When I heard it was OP I knew that everyone and their BF would be switching over to Tau, so I didn't. :(
Been looking at Space Wolves though...

I started playing by borrowing my friend's Necrons/Marines. Eventually I bought into the game myself, picking up Space Marines (both Salamanders and Iron Hands) as well as Grey Knights, Tau, and Dark Eldar. I've also got a very small (one HQ and a single troops unit) Blood Angel allied detachment. I've purchased a small selection of models from Raging Heroes to use as a Guard army, but it has yet to arrive.

For this statement right here, you have my respect. I have the printed Inquisitor rulebook sitting on my shelf at home. I'm almost certain I'll never get to play it because the prospect of explaining to my gaming buddies "ok, now look up the range code of your weapon, then look up the accuracy modifier chart and cross reference the accuracy code to the range" makes my brain recoil in horror (I get why they did it, but it's such an awkward horrible system and it adds more modifiers to a system that isn't exactly modifier light as it is).

40K: My primary is Imperial Guard, Catachans (old metal models only). Mainly mech vets, but, the list changes from time to time, just so I can use some models that I haven't for a while.

Other 40K: Orks, Blood angels twice (build, get tired, sell), and Salamander SM.

Fantasy: I have tried twice to get into this game. Once with High Elves and the other time with Lizardmen. Just can't get into it.

Hobit/LoTR: Never. Doubt I will.

I’ve never sold armies, but a lot of my early collection was for RT played as an RPG, so while technically an “army” most don’t have the points to see battle on the tabletop, or even in a legal configuration with a modern codex.

Old mothballed stuff:
Blood Angels (around 60 minis, could be a legal, but not effective 750-1k army)
RT-era Imperial Guard (might be a platoon’s worth today, ~50 guys)
Orks (dozen or so guys, could be an ally contingent)

Armies in the sense that I can field them with rules:
Eldar. My official “second army” should be a viable 2k army once I get to painting it.
Ultramarines. My main, ~6,500 points

If we are going to add non 40k stuff

Probably 3-4k each of WHFB Undead and Chaos. Both armies were mostly collected before their books were split up, but are primarily Vampire Counts and Warriors of Chaos. Smattering of Tomb Kings and Demons.

A small force of wood elves that never got very large.
A few wedges of bretonions (knights and archers) given to me be a friend before he moved away.

A small BFG plaugefleet and Imperial cruisers with some escorts.

For non-GW

A ton of OGRE minis
Silent Death, again, tons of.
Battletech minis (old) around 3 dozen mechs, assorted clans and inner sphere.
Clan Wars, crab army, lots of bare lead, about a score painted.
An army of assorted D&D minis, mostly unpainted.

Started out with dark angels in late 4th ed, picked up grey knights after getting my ass handed to me time and time again in mid to late fifth, late fifth my buddy who had eldar quit and have them to me, and recently a buddy made a bet with me lost and gave me enough tau to ally them with my armies.

Well, my first army was Dark Eldar. In the 3rd edition, my hardest match-up was Nids which were rather successful at that time until I got familiar how to beat them.
Dark Eldar always has been one of my favorite army. In the 3rd ed, I also started Eldar and this is my beloved army. I've lost just a few games with them despite the fact that I played lots of RTTs. When the new 'dex came out, I've shelved them since they are a bit overpowered.
My other beloved army is Blood Angels, also shelved at the moment but for contrary reasons.
I play Necrons since the new codex came out. Its a fun army to play which is able to deal with everything. This is the army I play in RTTs. Similar to Eldar, I lost not even a handful of battles.

I started in 3rd edition 40k and 5th Fantasy...

40k:
Tyranids
Necrons
Chaos (Thousand Sons)
Chaos (all the other chapters)
Lost and the Damned (remember that codex?)
Tau (sold off shortly after starting them)
Renegade Guard (re doing my Lost and the Damned)
Deamons (because they killed of my Word Bearers)
Dark Eldar
and just starting Raven Guard.

All these armies can be fielded at 3k or higher. With Chaos being my largest collection, I can do 20k if you combine Chaos, Guard, and Deamons.

Fantasy:
Undead (roughly 8k worth)
Ogre Kingdoms
Khemri (small, not sure what I have)

THEN:
Mordhiem (several warbands)
Necromunda
Bloodbowl (several teams)

Life is a game, Play to have fun!

Counting only GW systems, I started off with Bretonnia in 2011, and then I moved on to 40K and Chaos Space Marines that same year. I've sold off both those armies though. I kind of regret selling the Brets, but the Chaos Marines? Good riddance.

Get some converted minis (4-6 is a nice warband) and play it with them. Its awesome fun once you play a couple times you get the hang of it all
