Oh for gods sake. If anyone is worried about dirty models, just do what I did when I bought resin miniatures from Forgeworld (coated with release agent).

Get a plastic tub of warm, soapy water, lay out the models on a towel and scrub them clean using a soft bristled toothbrush and rinse them frequently in the water.

OP, i have never had a problem with 2nd hand models. But i guess each to their own.
Try dunking them in bleach if your worried, that will certainly kill all.

I always remember the fragrant gentleman who was known as Wheezy Pete (picture Mr Ploopy from Blackadder, with a wrist support, rank hair, stained baseball cap, stained teeshirt and sweatpants...with stains), who would occasionally venture into my flgs in the UK with happy tales of cooking sausages with electrodes and who smelled so badly there was a physical wall of wee/spank stench about 10 feet around him. He claimed to sell his minis on ebay for a handsome fee ('professionally painted', no less) and even showed me one of his poorly daubed old ral partha elves one day, taking it from the pocket of his stained sweatpants. The figure had likely doubled in weight from the layers of humbrol paint and there was a 'short and curly' attached to it...

Yep, I disinfect second-hand minis now, thinking of Wheezy Pete and his trouser-elf...

Second hand models just aren't old enough to gain a vintage status just yet.
I've no problem with furniture, books etc
With time they will.
Until then I'll just feel a bit, 'Hrumph, i wish I'd owned that from new'.

I just can not bring myself to purchase second hand models. I rather like cutting the stuff up and putting the guys in poses I want them to be in. Not sure if it is an OCD or not but I just can not do it. I will buy models still on sprues with or without the boxes, but they must still be on the sprues.

Now, we like big books. (And we cannot lie. You other readers can’t deny, a book flops open with an itty-bitty font, and a map that’s in your face, you get—sorry! Sorry!)

I feel you man. Sorta.

Once I've painted them though, I have no worries about it. They are mine now mwahahahahahahaha

*ahem*

Give them a repaint and that aura will go.
I also find sprinkling them with fairydust helps them improve their aura *sarcasm*

Why do I feel that statement was rude?

Wait, are you referring to the thread where someone talked about using real blood and it devolved/spawned a new thread where it was mentioned about using a certain other bodily fluid in your paints?

Yeah, lets leave that thread dead, burned, and scattered to the winds where it belongs.

I was wondering if anyone else has a "problem" with 2nd hand models in that they arent very comfortable buying them since they are used and could have been literally anywhere with the previous owner (chewed on my the pet dog or sucked on my the kid, dropped onto the grimey floor or covered in godknows what etc).

I know, it sounds really bizarre as a sort of OCD but just wanted to see am I completely alone in this.

Yes I acknowledge its silly and yes I could save a frigging fortune but I only buy 2nd hand boxed kits.

Am I nuts?

Yes. You are completely OCD mental. It says more about what you do with models then other people.

I worry about bad paint more then anything else- hard to get off.

Hope more old fools come to their senses and start giving you their money instead of those Union Jack Blood suckers...

I buy warmachine second hand, so a ride in Super Clean takes the paint off and weakens the superglue bonds enough that they normally come apart as I'm brush the paint off.

Then I generally try to repose them to make them mine, to kill any 'Aura' they may have received over the years.

That, or I test creative ways to paint them quick and easy, and make them my 'Redemption' squad; after serving woefully with another master, they now have to earn their stripes to be considered 'mine'.

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

I paint things occasionally. Some things you may even like!

The only thing that's ever bothered me are vehicle kits. IG Sentinels specifically. The last batch I got were in pretty bad condition. So bad it was hilarious, really.

Apparently, Scout Sentinels can be armed with battle cannons, and TL MC devourers. One had its legs glued on backwards. Another one had a Grot for a pilot, for the love of the Emperor!

I'll still swap and buy assembled vehicles....but not Sentinels.

I'm pretty anal about cleaning up mold lines and drilling barrels. So when I buy second hand, I expect that I'll have to strip (or at least repaint) everything. I never buy a "finished" army expecting to just play games with it.

I dislike pretty much all second hand stuff; it just feels... Nfhh db gfhg... (as in, I can't really explain it).

Books and Dvds I'm just about okay with, but anything like clothes is automatically out. Luckily I'm fairly alright with models.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I'm more than happy to use second hand ANYTHING. (Though I'd draw the line at underwear...)

The cost of living is high, and getting ever higher, so needs must. I assembled an entire music studio from second hand equipment. To buy everything new would have cost in the region of 40k (no pun intended). Due to the joy of flea bay and gumtree, I reckon I did it for under 10k. I don't buy much second hand models though, purely because life is too short to fix other people's mistakes...

This is hard to explain =/

I am the exact same way. I only buy models that are NIB. I must put together the army the way I want it, pose them the way I want, etc. It's not so much that they've been owned before and I don't want the previous owner's "spirit of the game" still attached to them, but that it must be new to me.

You're not crazy, it's a little like superstition. Think of all the superstitions people have about dice. It is no different.

I buy NIB models, but that's because I undercoat on the sprue and/or am frustrated by poorly glued/prepared models.

The best way to get cheap models is to get ones that will need a Simple Green bath, so I'm not worried.

A lot of opposition against used models citing modeling reasons.

I mean, the metal and finecast comes rights apart in Simple Green, and the plastic ones can just be cut up and re-built. Sure you may come across some really badly assembled ones that are obviously beyond salvation due to glue damage, but generally you wouldn't be buying those anyway. Picture isn't clear? Skip it. Only buy the ones secondhand you know you can restore to pristine condition.

If you are worried about auras on your miniatures I suggest you go and visit a toy soldier psychic specialist.

I've never even thought of 2nd hand miniatures being dirty before as someone mentioned previously door handles are the filthiest things ever. On that subject sydney train hand rails/poles (in carriage) are seeming to get more and more greasy. Is this because they are cleaned less or people have greasier hands...meh who knows...I'll carry a bottle of simple green

Baptize second hand models in simplegreen/alcohol/brake fluid. As an added bonus if they used crap glue to assemble it, it will dissolve of become very brittle. My best recovery was an 8 dollar plastic wraith lord. overnight in 99% isypropanol and pow, it fell into its component parts and the terrible paint job was gone. I just wish I took a before picture.

There are risks with second hand models, typically piss poor assembly or conversions, but its worth the gamble for the reduced price.
