Here endeth today's episode of dictionary corner.

I don't accept this. The point was that "DLC is not a microtransaction", and your argument is that virtual goods ARE microtransactions, which is fine, but I'm yet to find anything that says DLC is not a form of microtransaction.

Show me a source.

And I DID read them, I read the part that said Microtransactions are small transactions made online which is what I needed. I didn't read the definition of virtual goods because it wasn't pertinent to the point I was making. I didn't just "assume it was correct" and resent that totally.

Ok, I'll do my best:

DLC: The game is complete, you get what you paid for, BUT, in the future, NEW content is created for that game. That NEW content meant work hours. Those work hours must be paid and the company must make some proffit, hence, a small cost for the DLC.

Microtransactions: Ok, Tales of Phantasia (I think that's the one) is a perfect example. The game is complete and what you can buy IS NOT NEW CONTENT. No, what you can buy is XP, GOLD, ITEMS, etc. This means, stuff that's available in game that you work for, BUT, if you have the money, not the time, you can buy it for a small price.

There.

On-topic: I support the idea of more 40k based games but... not like this one. Still, I can't blame them if they are "testing the waters", see if the whole mobile market is good enough for more and bigger projects.

Still, I want a freakin' DoW3, damn it!

I'm perfectly calm, and I'm not obsessing over language, I'm defending my (fairly benign) point about the news story from two language obsessives who have yet to actually back up their line.

Individuals' intepretations of the terms are fine, but not without their problems - which are best discussed elsewhere, and I can certainly think of numerous problems with the description given above - the point is, nowhere is it officially written that "DLC is not a microtransaction", so dismissively just shoving that at me was pretty uncool, and I'm not OK with that. That's all. I'm happy to leave it now.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

It looks like it might be worth $3 for a little poop-time gaming, but that's about it. I do wish they'd release WQ and SH for Android but, meh, all we seem to get from GW licensed stuff is the shovelware.

Also, guys, the bright red text usually means you should stop that particular thread of discussion.

I love PvZ, and I love Dark Angels, so for the price of a sandwich, this has enough to get me to waste a few hours playing it.

I know people are moaning that this isn't DoW, but this is a lit game you can play on our phone while pooping, I think that's pretty cool.

Possibly off-topic, but I've seen the point about the "value" or the "recognizability" of the 40k IP come up over and over in various threads, but how high is it, really? If not for Space Marine and DoW before it, I never would've encountered 40k outside of wargaming. After Space Marine's lackluster showing, does 40k really have enough business clout to warrant anything better than shovelware?

It can't really be compared to something like Dawn of War, but man do I wish we were getting another one. Who knows what Relic is up to now, without THQ though.

Space Marine sold fairly well and reviewed fairly well. A lot of folks really enjoyed it. Any IP can be made into a great game or a terrible one.

I actually really like Space Marine, especially the mp. It would be awesome to get a sequel that fixes a lot of the problems with the first game.

Actually Space Marine exceeded expectations from all the semi-direct reports I can find

eg http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/02/thqs-sales-exceeded-expectations-in-q2-space-marine-sold-1-2/

(Wikipedia says sales were disappointing but doesn't have a reference, and probably just means it was not a major run away success)

so the 40K IP itself is not going to guarantee sales but a decent IP like 40K will usually help sales of an otherwise decent game simply because more folk will be prepared to check things out,

especially important for games (or Apps) with small advertising budgets where the biggest sales barrier is simply not knowing it exists

Speaking of, we should get DD2 together for more Space Marine action.

Yeah I'd have bought WQ and SH for Android, but searching for them found me some other dungeon crawlers that are on Android so I'll try them instead

I personally feel someone should do a kickstarter for a new Space Marine game. Preferably one that isn't about fething Ultramarines or Blood Magpies (since THQ has taken a dirt nap)

I don't really think this Plants Vs Zombies style works for the Purge of Kadillus. Cause otherwise we'd be rocking 10th Company Sgt Naaman, Ravenwing and Deathwing.
If anything, they should've gone for a DoW1 RTS for that campaign.

Looks like a generic phone game to me. Thats dissappointing. A turn-based strategy game would have been better use of the license.

Selling this bunch of licence to do this does not prevent them selling a licence to another company to do a turn based strategy game,

Since there's been no publicity about once there probably isn't a company interested in making a turn based strategy game

Ah, and GW again shows its ability to make a great transition into the video game market. Whats next "Angry Angels"? You too can launch beakie heads at choas constructs.

GW sells video game property rights to THQ: "GW is horrible. They're just selling their entire IP to one company who probably won't even do anything with it other than keep milking the DoW cash cow until it's shriveled up to nothing. All these expansions are just a cash grabbing move to make us buy every last one. Good job Games Workshop..."

GW spreads out video game IP to multiple companies to make many and varied games of all qualities and genres: "GW is horrible. I have been waiting for so long, not for some grim dark theme "true" 40k game but something with fun - been more strategetic will surely be better, but this still works for me
give me your marine & boyz and I'll pay for it

Waaaait. GW refused to let Blizzard make a full-blown quality game in time and took ages to actually allow anyone to release a video game based on their IP and now they are selling out for this crap? Wooow. Someone's desperate.

When the whole Blizzard thing (supposedly) went down, GW had a license with SSI for strategy games(Chaos Gate and Rites of War). Why would you ditch out of a license with an established name for a relatively unestablished name?

Plus there was not really the whole "mobile" market at the time.

Yeah, we've seen how this descision played out.

As for mobile market, by now you could at least try to do something that a) catches the eye graphicswise and b) has at least a little bit of innovation in it instead of taking warcraft3 linetowerwarsV18.3.125beta and putting some custom skins on. The way this looks I wouldn't even play it if it came pre-installed on my next phone for free.
