It took me a while, but warband character numero two is done.

May I present,

Fing Brainbursta, Ork Mutant Renegade:

I'll wait for a bit then I might add my thoughts and commentary on the model.

The colours are totally crazy and Tzeentchian. Very cool. I think you are so courageous painting these models in these colours.

The eyesquig seems much more in place on a tzeentchian model that on a standard ork.

Good job with the skin tones- very Tzeentchian feel to them. The targeter squig does work very well as a familiar.

Very characterful choice of colours!

And Tzeentchian Ork... that's certainly new.

Thank you very much for the kind words folks, it certainly keeps me going!

JimmyG, I view it more as an Ork duped into the Great Deceiver's service than as an actual servant or minion. I was careful to actually avoid any actual Tzeentchian iconography, although the colours keep in line with the mutated / pseudo-daemonic aesthetic I love.

A few thoughts on painting "Fing Brainbursta";

It was a challenge but also a blast painting the Ork skin. I threw a load of green, blue and purple glazes at it after I did the basic "healthy" Ork greenskin.

Did anyone notice the multi-coloured glyph on the shoulder pad? It's a little easter egg I put in, the symbol itself translates as "fing", which is Ork for mutant / twist.

I think I overdid the last glaze on the squig's eye, he looks either super-high or more than it sees something mystical / magical than the Ork is completely oblivious too.

There are a lot of bits on the model I don't like that much and so rushed through, and the varnish I usually use messed up the tones and glossy textures which really annoyed me. I think it reacts strangely with the W&N ink I used. Note to self, get new varnish!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Annnnnnnnnd with the Ork finally done, work begins on the next chap;

In my mind this chap is a lesser acolyte / cultist of the Withering Eye. The parchment in his left hand will have a painted eye and scribbled text / portents of a glimpse of the future as spoken by Tzeentch. The dagger looks like a sacrificial one, which is cool.

Lots of work still to do naturally, mostly a pinch of sculpting clean-up and that.

I should probably put a glimpse of my thoughts and concepts of the Cult of the Withering Eye from mind to keyboard to here, I guess it would help to show people what I'm aiming for.

Imagine backwater cultists ritually cutting out one of each of their eyes, so that Tzeentch could send them the odd fragmented glimpse of the future / a tiny part of it's grand cosmic plan. ie. kill this rival, steal this artefact, etc. Lots of fanatical half-blind loonies, waving around hand-sticks and parchments of demented notes about the future and generally making not much sense!

Thanks for reading, any and all modelling /background ideas and suggestions are more than welcome.

All hail the Great Deceiver!
Feral

Hello everyone!

Things are still going slow but steady with the Tzeentch warband (I work on them as I get ideas or inspiration), but I'm going to start adding some other concurrent projects as well, hopefully you will like them just as much.

- - - - - - -

Much like many people on Dakka, I've too been bitten by the new Ork bug. I've always had a bit of soft spot for them even though the last time I properly tried to paint some it was around 10 -15 years ago. I've always steered toward the Ork notions of looting tech and big gunz over running at the enemy screaming!

Fast forward to two / three weeks ago, the plastic Flash Gitz were leaked and I knew I had to have them! Pirates! Ostentatious and outrageously snazzguns! Pirates again!

I wanted me some Freebooterz!

Started painting the Kaptin last night, good solid opening 4-5 hour painting session. Them's the best ones, where time shoots by as the paint flies!

The fleshy lips are a tad overdone I feel but overall super happy with how the skin has turned out.

Arm and Snazzgun is being painted separately for logic's sake. Banner to be done afterwards,in case you were wondering.

Arm loose in place, to show off the Kaptin's Snazzgun, with extra bolted-on gun for even more Dakka than the lads! Only da best fer da Kaptin!

Not very interesting, but first area to be painted was the coat, naturally had to be a very deep purple.

- - - - - - -

Can't remember if I showed a WIP of these before, but I am also whipping out some "gaming-standard" Daemons, starting with Daemonettes. These are mostly an experiment in using washes, glazes, inks, water effects and Blood For The Blood God to do the main painting work. I decided against the command upgrades so they can be summoned through the 7th edition psychic phase (theoretically anyway, if I ever get to the gaming table under 7th. Only did once with 6th edition, and that was just a simple intro game! )

- - - - - - -

I would love to hear what you think!

Getting there....

Turns out after much thought and consideration, I wasn't happy with the shade of Ork flesh I was doing. Don't get me wrong, I do like it but all the highlighting / blending was mostly lost after the final washes.

I was also wanted to try a much paler and more "realistic" camo green-brown, like this:

Spoiler:

Several hours later at the local GW*:

Clearly a lot paler than the illustration above, but I'm pleased as punch now. Aside from a tiny bit more grey for the final edging highlights and maybe a pinch more magenta / red (like the bottom lip and fingers), around the face - all good and pretty simple colour scheme to boot.

Any thoughts at all?

Triple posts made me sad.

*got invited to get me Flash Gitz photo'd once they are all done for their FB page, so nice bit of motivation there!

I dont know where all your commenters went.
The second skin tone seems better, there was something about the purple lips that didnt work. Maybe there wasnt enough contrast between his purple jacket and skin?
I love the newest withering eye cultist, where does his head come from?
If youve read the Ravener books theres a cult that seems somewhat similar, in that they are prophets who replace one eye with a bionic one, covering their organic one with a sash.

It could be cool and somewhat grotesque if they had the removed eye nailed onto their armour, perhaps above the scrap of scroll that contains the scant vision they gained.
A character could be some mad demon/ deranged prophet who collects or tries to collate all of the knowledge, and wears the scrollls as a makeshift coat-

Looking forward to seeing more. And cheers for being my only Mordheim commenter over at the bunker.

the deamonettes are brilliant , the shiny red crab claws and face tattoos/ stains are quite disturbing. i was not really fond of the first purpley ork though , the colors together didn't work for me. the skin tone on the the latest looks good, the yellowy tooth and red lips are a nice addition

Their loss I guess! I give 'em Tzeentch, they don't care. I give 'em SHINY NEW ORKSIES, they don't care. Perhaps they wanted faster progress?

I agree, I think the problem was I was initially trying to emulate the fantastic pale-fleshed Freebooter that was in White Dwarf a couple of weeks back now. It didn't work out so well, I overdid it!

Grag wrote:I love the newest withering eye cultist, where does his head come from?

Funnily enough, it was the severed head off an Ungor standard pole, hair and bits trimmed off. Still not quite sure what I'm doing with it detail-wise yet to be honest.

I have, I remember them now!

Bernard Black! I adore Black Books!

The severed eyes concept is brilliant! Now for the fun of Googling severed eyes for sculpting references.............thanks..............

I like the coat idea because it is bonkers, but I might tone it down and just have a dozen scrolls or so. Super fiddly work that'll be!

Looking forward to seeing more. And cheers for being my only Mordheim commenter over at the bunker.
The AB folk probably never experienced the sheer insanity that was Mordheim! All they want is this pro-Imperial INQ28 malarkey I keep hearing about!

neil101 wrote:the deamonettes are brilliant , the shiny red crab claws and face tattoos/ stains are quite disturbing.

I feel dirty how easy these are to do. Almost too easy..... I've use several rough mixes of water effects, regular GW paint, glazing medium and Blood for the Blood God for the red.

neil101 wrote: i was not really fond of the first purpley ork though , the colors together didn't work for me. the skin tone on the the latest looks good, the yellowy tooth and red lips are a nice addition

That's fair enough! In hindsight there was a bits I liked about him and a lot I don't. If I did do another version or similar, I would of kept the more subtle mottled colourations (like on his back muscles) across all the flesh areas and generally just tone it down a lot. I'm kinda glad it's not exactly how I wanted it, gives me something to muse upon and an area to improve on! I still like the garish mutant old-school glyph though. It's nice when someone politely challenges what I make, because I wouldn't get any better otherwise!

When I get home later I will post the early start to the next Acolyte, which has either a hands-out magic / casting pose or is doing a great impression of the Sith Emperor from Star Wars.

As promised:

Clearly not much to look at for now, but I feel clearly an improvement on his previous "hunchback" incarnation. The Scion chestplate sorted out the weird way the back was bent forward at the waist joint.

Aside from the usual Archer parts, Empire Handgunner head (love it), and a mutated hand made from a Ghoul arm and Pink Horror finger. As I remember, I pilfered that arm from an abandoned plastic Blue Horror concept model (way before the official ones that came with the Burning Chariot were released - I have some of those as well of which the little multi-arms will go on more Acolytes!).

The head screams out for a 40K bionic eye and gubbinz. It is interesting how the overall warband concept is evolving from destitute peasantry to more classic-40K tech levels. It's just about getting the balance right. I guess I better tidy my desk and research for more ideas now.

I've got loads of Pink Horror limbs so I am playing around with the idea of hand-sticks (thanks neil!) and on a wild fancy, if I could make the arms line up properly then one playing a flute or similar instrument sounds fun.

Loving the conversions. That colour scheme for the Daemonettes is really awesome. Orks are looking great too.

Just had a sort of idea
You painting has a wonderful, smoothly blended etheareal quality to it , it could be cool to use dry brushing/ general grungy painting on paticular parts of the models. Say for example, use the wonderful bluey purple flesh tones for skin, but 'grounded' by some dirty painting on clothing, boots, weapons etc.
All those things which have not "Ascended into a higher plain" That way, if you have any deamons in the band they could be purely ectoplasmic, while the "lesser beings" are tied to the earth.
Deep, eh
Could you possibly pm me a link to those "ahem digital Realm of chaos books".

I'm not going to lie, I had some "inspiration" when it came to the Daemonettes;

I look how burnt their limbs look there.

I'm aiming to use lots of subtle glazing, colour gradiation and plenty of water effects again for the daemonic limbs, as well as the classic Tzeentch colours blues, purples, greens and gold. The normal human flesh and clothing are all quite muted greys, browns and blacks (with a pinch of purple in each).

My previous Champion is a good example of this:

No update I'm afraid (I'm away from the modelling desk and it's been too warm to paint recently) but I have the start of a miniature concept I'd like so feedback on.

I'm feeling the concept of either a Pink Horror or some form of bound Daemon coming on, something similar to the bizarre Superman villain, Vyndtvx:

(I love this cover!)

Initial thoughts are: three merged faces, two sets of legs and arms each and adding pulsing eyes to one pair of palms - Pale Man (of the amazing Pan's Labyrinth) style.

If I have enough appropriate human heads, I'll use those otherwise the three Blue Horrors from the chariot kit merged together will do.

What I would like feedback on is the concept and feasibility of merging Daemons and technology together. Does it work in the fluff at all? I know it does when it comes to Soulgrinders, but what of standard lesser daemons? If no luck there, then perhaps some form of possessed half-Daemon and cybernetics-enhanced half-human?

That sounds pretty gosh darn cool.
I dont see why daemons couldn't be fused with tech, but maybe they need some more human components. That is to say it makes more sense for a servitor to first have the technology built on, then become possessed than for a creature of the warp to have the gubbins put straight on. Sorry, thats not very clear

Anyway, you would think that there arent any rules, its chaos after all.

I did have one idea that might be cool, if difficult to pull off. Why not have a deamon with mulitple eyes, floating around his head like this:
Spoiler:

If you made them small you could avoid the comical look, and each could be held up by the optical nerve(thin brass wire etc) The three faced head could also be similar to Janus, the Greek god with two heads. That could add an interesting twist,(no pun intended…. ) if the cultists worship a deamon, but believe it is a Saint/the Emperor.
