I have a friend, much like your parents.
He's only about 10 years older than me. He got a couple of 2nd hand ebook readers from a local thrift shop (kobo). They each had the old owner's account still active on them (separate people).
"Can I get the contents off this?"
"can I put more stuff on them?"
After some tinkering, and getting one repurposed as MY ereader (changed user accounts and managed to sync all content to my account), I found out the answer was yes (at least with my computer). They read .mobi and .epub.
.
After some more talking, what they where asking was if I could put my Textbooks on an eReader to save money for college. I said the honest answer. Now, very few people actually sell textbooks AS ebooks IME, they didnt like that answer.
That's because they can't really sell the ebook, buy it back for pennies, and resell for nearly full price to college students. It's a money thing. I wish I wasn't cynical, but that's the reason why. Regular textbooks they can. You can find downloadable textbooks online sometimes, that's how I made it through grad school.
I know, My Sociology teacher said If I ever wanted to be a criminal, but do it legally, go publish textbooks

Considering I just spent about 2 hours trying to get an old game to work on my laptop, only to finally get it running (after doing various interesting things to get around the copy protection that didn't recognize Windows 7 as a real operating system since it wasn't a thing when the game was released), and then discover it lags more now than it did on my parent's desktop I played it on when it was new... I don't understand it. I'm getting 40 FPS, it's just that everything is playing in slow motion.
Not in the best mood at the moment with regards to technological compatibility. This one is just shoddy programming though, not even Microsoft's fault as far as I can tell.

Truth. I'd give anything to have XP, or even Windows 7 back. Anything, anything to not have to use Windows 8.
You know, sometimes my computer simply refuses to let me log on. I have to log into a second admin account (that I have to keep simply in case this "bug" occurs), go and fiddle with the registry, then reset the computer. I only learned that after refreshing the system files, running a system restore, attempting to wipe the disk (which failed for no discernible reason), and finally removing the user account altogether.
Never. Again.

There are a lot more textbooks available on kindle in the US than there are in Australia (due to local publishing restrictions on content). Depending on the classes, naturally.
It really pissed my niece and her fiancee off when they were at uni (considering they were using US written textbooks printed by local publishing house). They could have carried ALL of them on their kindle instead of having to fork out $75-130 per book.

Well there's your problem. You are using Win 8 on a proper machien. I suggest upgrading to Win 7; that is so much more user friendly and it is designed to work with computers and not a glorified touchscreen.
