Good idea that and the Squids great. Nice to see some Xenos for the Ordo Xenos to deal with too much focus on Daemons in the background for the Inquisition.

Yeah man, 40k is filled with so many interesting and horrific Xenos creatures as to make Chaos look utterly mundane!

So I basically got into the game/setting during 3rd Edition, like many I would imagine, and as such the 3rd Edition rulebook holds a lot of fond memories for me. The front cover, to the painted armies (especially the Tyranid/Valhallan display) and also the artwork throughout. This particular sketch has always been a firm favourite of mine.

So despite the calls for paint I've chosen to buy more models... my constant downfall! I do plan to get some painting done at some point. Probably after this next batch, which will only result in about 4 miniatures anyway!

I really wanted to create a large Tallerian Dog Soldier but I can't get my hands on the base mini I want at the moment. Really don't want to buy the full kit either as I have no use for the other parts.

So to stem my disappointment I had a brainstorm and figured I could do a few other things instead; Purchase list includes
Two Cairn Wraiths, an Ur-Ghul, a Clawed Fiend and Prince Apophas...

So until they arrive, all correct guesses receive a prize... the prize is the satisfaction of guessing correctly and possibly getting some alien creature named after you in the distant future.

So after loosing a particularly beautiful ebay hall to last minute bidding shenanigans I sought to console myself in the kits that arrived from GW this morning.

So many to choose from, but where to start?

As in my previous post, I turned to this image.

Spoiler:

I had a Clawed Fiend in it's box, waiting to go, but felt that I'd need time to think up an appropriate base. Therefore it is with much delight that I present to you, fine viewer, my WIP Hrud.

Now bear in mind artistic license and the fact I've never seen these guys as rats in my mind. I've kind of imagined them as somewhat more Humanoid. The way I see them is that they have longer front limbs and sharp claws on their hands and feet to assist in climbing, the tail is mostly used for balance. I'd like to think that they are more active at night (no gak... Nocturnal eh?).

Now, you're probably thinking why is that Hrud so massive? You'd be right in doing so as the original drawing places them at a hunched height of probably between 1 and 2 feet tops.
As with all Imperial Data they are prone to get it wrong. Look at the Xenology version of the Hrud and you'll see a massive contrast. As such I thought that it would be more than appropriate to scale up the smaller hooded alien to the size I assume the Xenology one is.

I originally didn't have the tail on him but I feel it balances the model out, as he's hunched over to one side and quite like it being referenced in the original drawing. The tail certainly looks more Alien Warrior, but I felt that anything with the title of Nocturnal Warrior of Hrud at least deserved some slight element of the darkest terrors in the cinema universe. He also looks quite like a Scavvie/Mutant without it. Hoping to pick a non human colour for the exposed skin. He also has no head. I did trim down the Ur-Ghul head to just the jaw and had that somewhat hidden beneath the robe but actually preferred not being able to see any sign of a head. Give it a bit more mystery and allows the Hrud to look more horrific than I could ever do justice, but just in our imaginations. That's always the best bit about Horrific creatures, not knowing what the beast fully looks like until it's eating your face.

Still need to work on the hood so that it flows like the rest of the robes, but other than that i'm very happy with how this is progressing.

Thanks guys, means a lot.

I think I'll be up for doing the whole line up if I can. I'll count the Ceph Suit as the jellyfish creature on the right.

The lost haul can translate into some new paints then!

The question is guys, what would the Psy-Gore look like? Perhaps.. hmm... think I have an idea. I'll think about it, it's always been a curiosity of mine too... I'm going to take it that the Crystaline handgun is actually to scale with the rest of them. Psy-Gore as giants I think. Well more Ogryn sized, but won't be based on an Ogryn.

EDIT: Might be thinking giant psychic spider people. But like Arachnarock giant but with more than eight limbs and a Centaur esque torso....

Also have to say that Inquisitor report that you posted up last night Neil gave me a lot of inspiration to get this started, so thanks for that and everybody involved!

PAINT FOR THE MASSES!

I love the hrud! Another way to deal with the size discrepancy between the imperial source and your model would be to say there are lesser and greater hrud; an excuse to also make some tiny (night goblin based?) hrud that go with this guy.

Cheers guys, getting the paints ordered so hopefully there will be some new stuff at the end of the week.

I think that's a great idea about the lesser Hrud. Will maybe revisit that at some point.

The Psy-Gore will probably be the next thing. I'm thinking of using the Plague Drone body and legs, but using all the legs on the one body to kind of give a more bettle like leg structure. Will be using the Spawn kit as well. The idea being that the Psy-Gore are Chaos worshipping Xenos and that their Crystalline weapons are actually warp energy solidified and amplify psychic potential.

I think the direction of the Thread is basically turning into Xenos horrors of the 41st Millenium... will see though.

That is an excellent direction though. The Hrud looks great with a dark slinky style

So I've been a bit distracted a of late and completely avoiding painting, as always.

Following on from Azreal's thread I got thinking about using the Incarnate Elemental of Fire as the basis for a Lord of Change. I had always thought it would make an excellent basis for a Greater Daemon but had put it to the back of my mind.

Basically he's the Fire of Tzeentch given form. This is obviously just initial work in progress but he' going to have limbs made from flamers, horrors, spawn and any other bits I can think of. The legs of the incarnate have been sawed off (madness!) but i'm planning to add some daemon fire and bits to represent a constant form shifting.

I really like the base models face. To me it looks like there is a skull forming out of the skull of the original face.

As always, cheers for looking & let me know what you think!

Thanks guys.

Malika: I think i'll make some more in the future. It's a pretty easy conversion and I encourage everybody to give it a try or come up with their own spin on this much neglected Xenos race! Following your suggestion maybe i should send GW the mini and tell them to get cracking!

Neil: You're totally right it does have a Kingdom Death feel to it, also a bit Dark Souls. It does overall have some kind of strange Japanese/Oni looking feel to it. More Tzeentch weirdness to follow though.

Will be working on the arms today. Have some Phoenix toes to turn into fingers and cluster of eyes to add, was thinking perhaps on the right hand side of the chest.

The hardest part will probably be the spiraling forms of change that are going to be the "legs". Slowly building up to that though.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Small update with regard to the arms. Decided to make use of the robe on the left to give him three arms. While the arms are out of scale with the body I liked the way they sat together. I'm also planning for the right arm to be a bit larger with talons for fingers. 9 fingers if I can get it to work right. Will see though.

By the way, if you're going to do more xenos, a later edition of the 40k rulebook also had a cool xenos pic in it:

But personally I'm very curious to see how you'd do a Slann or Laer...

That's from 6th Edition IIRC.

I like it. My plan is to try for making a Psy-Gore of Perseus and make a crystalline handgun. I just need to get the bits!

I've always pictured Slann as pretty similar to the fantasy versions. Although it might be interesting to do.

Laer are another interesting option but I don't know much about them. I've got a Clawed Fiend sitting, waiting to be altered.

Very curious how you'll do the Psy-Gore, will the creature be crystalline as well?

Regarding the Slann, which Fantasy version do you mean? The more modern models which seem to be these more bloated frogmen, of the older versions that are more lithe?
Spoiler:

The Laer would be an interesting choice, considering that they're Slaanesh worshipping aliens. Somebody on Warseer is trying to make one.

I like that blanch drawing. Has it more in mind of a Saurus rather than a frog type creature. Might be a basis for starting with Kroq-Gar or something.

I don't imagine the Psy-Gore to be Crystaline themselves. I think on the previous page or the top of this one I think of them more along the lines of creating the crystals from the Warp. They themselves are insectoid. I'm thinking of using the Plague drones as a starting point. Filing away and filling in all the nurgle stuff.

That's a nice blog with that Laer stuff in it. That guys true scale marines are pretty slick.

I was googling to see if anyone had done an Incarnate Elemental into Tzeentch daemon conversion (I was thinking maybe by using a bird head on the Elemental's body) and not only has someone already had this idea, but they've executed it way better than I would have done, and aimed for something far more ambitious. So what's the plan with the legs? I like the original model's strange long legs (do you have them spare?) but if you are doing a swirly thing, what about using the Balewind Vortex?

Medium,

These Tau humans are great conversions, very evocative.

All of your work is good to be honest.

But, I have to admit, the pose on your very first gunslinger is WAY more dynamic then the pose you settled with. I was a bit shocked you went backwards. The movement you captured in your first conversion was amazing, and in my opinion is the best "tau" human agent model I've ever seen. It was a bit rough in the sculpting, but the character you captured, and the pose outdid the limitations in your sculpting.

If I could suggest one thing to you, having looked at all of your progress since you started this PLOG, it is to go back and remake that first conversion using everything you know now.

He is just too cool to not finish and bring to completion!

Great work man, I love what I am seeing here.

Coming in a little late on this one, but your Hrud is the best one I've ever seen. Such an evocative pose.

Even if it doesn't match the newer look the Hrud are supposed to have; some kind of [url=http://img4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20080917215849/warhammer40k/images/thumb/3/34/Hrud/250px-Hrud.jpeg}slinky-millipede man[/url].

For those of you who have seen PDH's and Neil's fantastic Realm of Chaos thread you'll have no doubt been inspired.

A few months ago I began trawling ebay for old metal models to do my own bit of fantasy modelling. The idea basically to go down the route of the above. I was however horribly caught short in a bidding war for a great deal on the old RoC books. This left me a bit miffed, totally still not bitter...

More recently Bruticus' work on his own Mordheim campaign Throne of Bones, inspired me to delve into the parts I'd managed to wrangle. There are still more bits to come for this man. Specifically the Chaos Chariot kit that will be thoroughly cannibalised when it arrives.

I've always loved Chaos Warrior art, particularly Adrian Smith and the like. I've always felt the models fell short.

Below is my attempt to get across that inhuman strength that's so frequently portrayed in the artwork or even the CGI trailers for various videogames.

A basic conversion for now, but the devil's in the details and I hope to add a lot of them. I have a feeling this guy is going to get painted, (honestly!) as I'm feeling pretty inspired.

Bits - Archaeon on foot legs, Archaeon mounted torso and the Head of Harry the Hammer. A skull from the Soul Grinder kit and bones from the Kroot sprue decorate the base.

For some reason The Serpent King keeps springing to mind for a name. Thinking of something along those lines. It's probably because the Helmet crest reminds me of sea serpents.
I imagine he serves The Pantheon rather than a particular god, he might get champions for each god to accompany him or perhaps a few cultists as followers.

As you can see, he's quite the tall bugger. The Slaanesh Champion will be getting a different head and two axes. I always felt that this model was female apart from the face. Thanks Slaaneshi androgyny!

Hopefully more to follow and paint, eventually.
