Trick or treating is a "made up American holiday"? I was under the impression that Halloween was the holiday. In any event it's still not a "made up" American invention http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trick-or-treating
The tradition of going from door to door receiving food already existed in Great Britain and Ireland in the form of "souling", where children and poor people would sing and say prayers for the dead in return for cakes.[4] Guising—children disguised in costumes going from door to door for food and coins—also predates trick or treat, and is recorded in Scotland at Halloween in 1895, where masqueraders in disguise carrying lanterns made out of scooped out turnips, visit homes to be rewarded with cakes, fruit and money

Apologies, I should have been more precise in my language and stated that I meant as an imported American tradition rather than a holiday. And despite what Wikipedia would tell you, trick or treating has never been popular over here or indeed widely practised - wassailing and similar is something that was practised over here and is still in small numbers but trick or treating in its current incarnation is not a UK custom and has never been. It has only been within the last, say 10 or 20 years that it has started gaining a groundswell, largely due to the impress of American TV shows, in much the same way that many UK Secondary schools now feel the need to hold proms because of the US TV teen series that the kids watch these days.

We live too far off the road (over 300 meters) and the house is not visible from the road. And the road is through a very rural area. Zero trick or treaters in 6 years. I drive my daughter to a residential area we have friends in so she can go trick or treating (we park and I walk with her). We also make up goodie bags that we deliver to all the 'neighbors' (folks with houses near us).

I actually think it's kind of cool to look at the history and the progression of the holiday, as the significance of Trick or Treating stems from practices in the UK way back in the day (as in, before even Frazz was born)
Hey you can't call it a proper Feast of Samhain without a good old fashioned burning of prisoners now can you?

Some of the references from your "well-referenced Wikipedia article" actually support filbert's stance that trick-or-treating is both lacking in prevalence here in the UK and is at best a mashing of old practises with new ideas (souling and guising were based on performing for rewards as opposed to simply being given them for turning up, and didn't include threats).
Trick-or-treating was invented in the US and Canada, as referenced in your article, even though some of its roots were not; a Toyota is still a Japanese car, for example, even though cars were not a Japanese invention. Furthermore, there's at least one reference in the article linking to a 2007 BBC article, and the poll (and a lot of the comments) contained within suggests that even then - only 7 years ago - it was still relatively unpopular.
I'd say that filberts claims are very much substantiated by the very article you're clinging to.

No trick-or-treating in my area until five to ten years ago and that was maybe three or four families once or twice when the sprogs were about three or four and the novelty hadn't quite worn off yet. Never answered the door. Haven't seen anyone doing it for a few years.
That said I've only ever seen one set of kids asking for a Penny for the Guy so the area isn't exactly catered for these sorts of activities.
Considering the nature of most of these children I don't see exactly why they deserve sweets/money et cetera whatever the holiday is that they are supposedly celebrating.

I lived on the same street for about 16 years, and we got through half of one of those cadbury multibags of assorted chocolate every Halloween up until the last 5 years or so, when we could've gotten by with a 4-pack of dairy milk bars. The only time I actually went out trick-or-treating was with some friends, and only 1 house answered the door. She said she didn't believe in the practice and gave us all an apple each. The next place I lived was in a... lower-class sort of place - think about 1 step above council flats. We got about 3 sets of kids total. Living where I have been for the last few years, we've had nothing, and apparently there's never been any trick-or-treaters for all the years the folks I'm living with have been here.
The most halloween-y people seem to get is halloween parties, but give a teenager any excuse to get pissed and they'll take it.

None, though I live in an apartment complex dominated by people in their mid 20s, so child-oriented practices are not prevalent.
That said, I have also noticed a steady decline in trick-or-treating as parents realized they were essentially endorsing the practice of taking candy from strangers.

I live in an HOA neighborhood, and I think that the "official" thing this year will be a "trunk or treat" which is kind of a lazy, bullgak way of doing things... but it is supposed to be "only" people who live within our neighborhood, so many-most people know each other by sight at the least.
