Massive range, Plasma massive deadly blast or three large blasts and some useful gubbins: lascannons and anti-infantry weapons.
I really like units that have more than one firing mode and let you tailor their use a bit. The Praetor is the same concept, it's got an AA, an AP, and an AT loadout you choose at the start of the game. Considering how goofy 40k lists can be, it's nice to have a little flexibility.
It doesn't hurt that both the Stormblade and Praetor look awesome.
I played another game versus the Stormblade, we played a city map and ruled that S9+ Blasts could collapse buildings (rolled a die and on a 6 the building is removed). Because of the Stormblade, the map went from super-cluttered and dense (with barely enough room for a sentinel to get down streets etc.) to a few sparse buildings around the edges left standing and a massive rubble field in the centre xD.
I love the look of the stormblade and the fact that it can threaten so much of my army, both armour or infantry, makes it a super-massive-threat in my mind.
I need more AT for the next games I think.

I concur with what has been said. Bubble wrap that Stormblade and it will make short work of most of the enemy's units. If you are having trouble with Knights, bubble wrap the Stormsword and watch them cry as the Volcano cannon unleashes its 120" range D goodness.

Active armies, still collecting and painting First and greatest love - Orks, Orks, and more Orks largest pile of shame, so many tanks unassembled most complete and painted beautiful models, couldn't resist the swarm will consume all
Armies in disrepair: nothing new since 5th edition oh how I want to revive, but mostly old fantasy demons and some glorious Soul Grinders in need of love |

Don't mean to nitpick, but did you mean the Shadowsword?
Sorry, it's just that I've not memorized all the Baneblade variants so I don't know what the Stormsword actually has, so I could be wrong.

Only the Shadowsword has a D strength weapon out of the basic 8 Baneblade varients. I would recommend any of the Baneblade varients, but the Shadowsword is my favorite.

That's what I thought.
Checked and the Stormsword has a 36" S10 AP1 Ignores Cover Apocalyptic Blast gun. Basically like the Hellhammer's gun with a bigger blast. In return the other stuff is kinda lame in comparison (no Demolisher Cannon, for one thing.).
Between the two, it sounds like the Hellhammer would be better, than again the Stormsword is cheaper.

I've always been partial to the Baneblade variant with the mega-bolter main weapon.
But my games tend to have a lot of infantry in them and a few sparse vehicles. Most squads don't even get transports on either side.
And now it occurs to me why reading at least the most recent page of an ongoing thread before replying to it is so important.

@OP - I would get the Knight, as it's your "best" choice; you shouldn't spend $100+ on a thing and then not buy the thing you like best.
if you really don't care which one to buy, and you really want something that's NOT a Knight, then get the Baneblade and magnetize it like crazy.

Nah what you need to do is grab a CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT and a bunch of cyclops Demilition vehicles
Drive the CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT up the table and disgorge all the cyclops demilition vehicles
Just watch when you make your opponent NOT shoot them as when they die (by the opponent destroying them), they can make a Strength D blast

I have my own superheavy and I have the shadowsword. I will say the D weapon is pretty poor. I played 2 games in a row against an army that included 4 Knights. The first game the shadow sword fired 4 times before it died and the Knights blocked all the shots with their invuln. Not one 6 was rolled on the destroyer table. The second game faired better as I won and the shadow sword lived the whole game. And fired its main gun all 4 turns before the game ended with me tabling my opponent. The sword finally got a 6 on the destroyer table but it was against a knight that had 2 hp's left. So out of the 8 turns that the sword fired it only got one 6 and 2 other shots got past the invulnerable saves.
In my opinion the heavy nerf to D and not being able to ignore cover or invulns really makes the shots pretty poor. If they kept the same damage that D does now but ignored invulns or cover I think it would be alright. But it's pretty poor.
In my opinion I would go for standard baneblade for rule of cool or go hell hammer as it's got a pretty strong main gun that could ignore cover.

Depending on what the goal of the apoc game is (which should be ending it as quickly as possible) your best bet is warhound, reaver or warlord.
Just spam D and kill the guy who is wasting everyones time with 6000pts of infantry.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

Once upon a time, that would have been considered, well, ...
However, given that he's currently playing Imperial Guard and has no Knights, nor Tier 1 Allies, I think going full Warhound with the dual turbo lasers is the best choice. D has been nerfed dramatically from before, so he's really just dropping 4 Demolisher templates per turn, which isn't really that big of a deal considering his game environment.
Were he playing Space Marines / Decurion, I'd say a single Knight. But Guard? Eh, go nuts on that single Lord of War.
