You did actually read the email that reds8n posted, right? The stuff isn't immediately up for sale. They're going to be reposting it sometime soon-ish, after they run some more of the stuff off in-house.

Wish there was some Dark Elf stuff left over but it's a nice gesture all the same. Why don't they just have the molds on standby and offer an order service? Get enough signatures/up front payments to make a run worthwhile?

Honestly, there was hardly any Dark Elf stuff that went Last Chance to Buy. It was named characters, some generics that are no longer around or have plastic kit equivalents and two Finecast unit sets(Shades and Reaper Bolt Throwers).

I read it, I just don't believe it especially as I'm certain there were definitely kits that went oos quicker than quite a few of those listed for a 're-run'! Which makes me think a red shirt stumbled over a dusty box of figs somewhere in storage...

And, again, if that were the case the stuff would already be up for sale. They had that happen before with the Chaos stuff--Throgg went out of stock the day he went up and was removed from the US webstore. Two days later he was back up there with no fanfare, before being removed again after his stock sold out.

This is different in that they're announcing it and enabling the "Email me" feature on the stuff.

As for DE, Lokihr Fellheart and the generic mounted lords is what I was too slow to pick up... for the last decade.

Nobody to blame but yourself there. Lokhir Felheart was such a lynchpin model for Dark Elf Corsair lists it's silly not to have had one!

Most of what they're doing another run on is stuff that was sold out before it was moved to 'Last Chance to Buy'. I imagine they're using the 'Email Me' option on the items to gauge how much of each item they need.

Eh, I'd be more inclined to think that if they had suddenly raised prices on these items. As it stands, it doesn't hurt them to do this and they earn positivie publicity, something they can benefit from tremendously.

Haven't they raised many of them recently? I don't think it's even physically possible to raise the price on that Valten set any higher. Its gravitational lensing is already bending light so far it periodically makes American shoppers see the Australian prices.

They haven't raised prices on anything for awhile (that I know of). New kits are loaded with the price increase, as opposed to spreading them across the ranges. That said, there have actually been quite a few price cuts recently, by way of the newer boxed sets (Calth, Starter packs, etc), so I guess it sorta evens out?

I still have the White Dwarfs where Valten first got released.

The Valten set is actually cheaper than buying them individually at that point in time.

It honestly reads like they were caught off guard, and sincerely were trying to be fair to their customers.

I believe that, it certainly looked that way regarding the Bretonnians and how despite being "Sold out" they were sporadically put back in stock like the manufacturers were trying to keep up with the demands and then given the last chance treatment even though nothing remained.

I hope that popularity sparks GW's interest.

Of course, seeing how their models skyrocketed in price on Ebay, that popularity might not have been purely by the fans.

Surely only a serious GW cynic could not see this as a big change of attitude from the company.

They've gone from disappearing things without warning, to giving a warning, and now to giving a second chance.

Naturally GW do not want to leave money on the table, fair enough, but they are a business and can't afford to keep every figure ever produced in stock for ever, so stuff has to be retired eventually. Some day even Sigmarines will be replaced by fancier versions.

This.

This is a huge step forward for the company. I mean, I know it's not what it once was or what other companies do...but baby steps people.

But as much as I love this...

I go back to the Limited Release of Space Hulk and how it conveniently showed up again around Christmas time...and was rereleased (again 'Limited') two years later...

Ah well.

Being a GW cynic myself, the key question is WHY are they doing this?

We're all familiar with the popular saying that emerged from Watergate: follow the money.

So what's up with GW's money? On one level, this is to be welcomed. GW is talking, and more importantly, listening to its customers etc etc which is all well and good.

But a cynical man would say, here's a company that laughed at it's customers for years when it was on top of the world, treated them dirt, and would have rather jumped off a cliff than take feedback or do market research. Now that it's finances are suffering, out comes the begging bowl with GW suddenly realising that the customer is king after all. Quite a change of heart

Conclusion? The company is not in good shape.

Obviously that's part of it... but if that were the only reason, they would've done this a long time ago. This is Rountree's doing, imo.

GW sales went down for years. Kirby never saw anything wrong with his doings, but it's Age of Rountree now. Things ARE changing, we can see them get back into contact with their customer base, a lot of great bundles, SG revived, board games, etc.

I agree.

GW retired stuff without warning because they hadn't done any proper judgement of how popular it might be (how many sales it might make) in the medium term. Therefore Bretonnians got the chop because they hadn't sold through the magic £2 million or whatever the accountancy department consider is the trigger point during the last year.

However suddenly people rushed to buy the kits when they went to Final Orders, and when the kits disappeared some of them probably emailed GW to ask if there was any chance of a re-release.

GW noting that they were leaving cash in customers' pockets, realised it was a good idea to announce a final run and take pre-orders for it. Low risk, nearly guaranteed sales, keeps the customers happy, and the models get retired anyway, just a couple of months later than planned.

TL/DR: Yes, it's about the money, but it's also about GW realising they screwed up their marketing, and trying to improve it.

Absolutely. I mean does nobody remember the fiasco around the final Old Yeller moment for the Specialist Games ranges? GW and FW wouldn't even confirm what was going on until multiple items were already permanently out of stock and somebody picked up a physical phone and rang them up, and within a few hours of that news coming out folk were panic-buying so hard that stuff was going OOS in the time it took you to add it to the cart and run through the checkout process.

Obviously it would be better if they didn't discontinue this stuff at all(and personally I'd disagree with it being necessary in any absolute sense; it's necessary because of the way GW have chosen to structure their business, not because they are a business), but they are, and this new way of giving fair warning with perhaps a small last-chance run of products that vanish particularly quickly is far superior to how they used to handle things.

There has been more than one change of command. When you replace a CEO, you then get a shift of mandarins and aides.

In short, I would surmise, certain elements with common sense got placed on the upward ladder and certain elemerretts, perhaps following disastrous fallout from ill-advised legal battles, years of aloof ill will generation towards the community and micromanaging the design studio to their own, very blinkered, view got placed on the downward slope...

We can but hope. If he is, he probably got shunted sideways into a position where he can do no damage. The irrelevance can then, to use his own words, goober to himself and feel all important as the world moves on. GW is a serious cynic

Actually I agree GW has changed attitude. Ever since Imperial Knights turned out to be a success GW has been doing a whole lot more to flirt with nostalgics, both with rules and models (harlies, mechanicum, genestealer cult, 30k stuff, specialist games, and even great discount deals).
But that is basicly for 40k.

As this "last chance to buy" thread concern a major part of the hobby discontinued and replaced with a cynical parody of the most vulgar GW concepts, weird and paranoid IP protection moves, not to mention AoS is wrapped in an obvious agenda to see just how high they can push the price tags from release to release.
I can not easily see anything not cynical about how their Age of Sigmar bussiness has been, and still is run.

Sure, the "start collecting" boxes are also great deals for Age of Sigmar, though they are also used to get rid of unpopular kits (like lizzie cold one riders), and still make people invest far more in certain armies than they othewise would have. The change of attitude here is that GW actually see that they also profit from the discount tactics.

Wow, perhaps Im more cynical than I actually thought. I even like lots of AoS stuff...
