Hi I am looking to start a herd army and was wondering if there are any non gw units of beastmen wondering around.
I would like some with a few less skulls and stuff than are stuck on gw's.

Your last point is especially laughable and comical, because not only the 7th ed Valkyrie shown dumber things (like being able to throw the troopers without parachutes out of its hatches, no harm done) - Irbis

I'm working on pretty much that now. 12 mierce gabrax to a regiment (longhorns that is), GBP 30/10 rrp in metal (got to email mierce about those for now, metals haven't had official releases yet). Upcoming Gul-Gabrax as lycans, Tarvax as guardian brutes, Gabrax mounted Gains as great chieftains on chariots, Gul-Gabrox (current Gabrox) as a brutox, I won't be needing many (if any!) non-Mierce models at all

And most of that stuff is (or will soon be) available in quite affordable metal now.

sorry, initial response was on phone. Here's a blog from someone who's a bit further along with the same idea (though frankly the sronax as a stampede doesn't work for me, I'd use those as chariot units and go with the spiffy new Toracx unit for a stampede). Do enjoy the lovely painting, too

Also (just to up the edit count here a bit, at this point!), the 125x100 footprint for a Longhorns unit lets you put 4x3 30mm bases on it, so using the original darklands bases is a fine option there. Equally, 40mm rounds for the Gul-Gabrax will fit a 120x40/80 footprint for the Lycans fine, as with the 50mm Tarvax on 150x50/100 for Guardian Brutes. 60mm ish square around the (Gul-)Gabrox base will work well enough for a Brutox as well, and the 50x100 footprint for the heroes on chariots need only be widened a little to fit the 60mm-based mounted Gabrox Tains.

With a minimum of effort, that'll give you a perfectly serviceable army for a whole other system as well!

(and honestly, IMO you're better off with Lycans over centaurs and Great Eagles over harpies 90%+ of the time anyway, so it's just the lack of direct equivalents for the 20mm based infantry units that's a little annoying in army comp. Longhorns will do just fine, though.)

If you like the oldschool look of the 5th edition GW beastmen, there are some really charming sculpts from

Blacktree design: http://eoeorbisuk.com/collections/fantasy/range_beastmen
and
Castingroom miniatures: http://www.castingroomminiatures.com/collections/beastmen

Among other things, beastmen playing Sitar and Hurdy-gurdy, from the latter

and wielding crossbows, from the former

But more regular beastmen too of course.

BTD has some. Not a huge range, but would probably mix pretty well with the foundry ones shown above.

EDIT: just realized Zywus already posted them.

There's also some stuff here:
http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/greek-mythology/monsters/

Centaurs and others - some figures in common with castingroom, as they're both "imprints" of Wargames Foundry.

There's these too

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Russian-toy-soldiers-Tehnolog-Centaurs-Gray-color-Hard-plastic-/252390712354?hash=item3ac3a8a422:g:kUAAAOSwAuNW2a6T

Note that the Tehnolog stuff is 1/35 scale A.K.A 54mm scale, so those centaurs are pretty large.

The Tehnolog werewolves for example are significantly larger then the mantic ones and they are monstrous infantry.

Does anyone have scale pictures for the Tehnolog werewolves or other monsters. I'd be curious to see if they're good sized for big monsters, or just too darn big to be useful.

I have an existing picture with Mantic werewolves in the front, Technolog Werewolves in the back (And a reaper undead werewolf in the back to the side).

It's not a very good angle for comparison unfortunately but the Technolog werewolves are slightly taller, but a lot bulkier. I don't think they are too big to work as Large infantry, but a bit too large to fit on 40mm bases, so with 2 in a regiment or 4 in a horde, they still fill out the bases rather well IMO.

Those are some cool Werewolves. I'm not a fan of the Mantic werewolves, but the Tehnolog ones have a nice aesthetic not to far from the Confrontation werewolves I used.

As you say, clearly too big for 40mm's. 4 looks more than dangerous enough but you could probably fit 6 on a 120x80 if you really wanted too.

I couldn't view the listing above, but here's a USA listing. 4 for $9 shipped is a pretty great bargain.

Are the ones you have "bendable" as the ad above says?

Mine were in hard plastic and not more bendable than say GW's or Rendera's HIPS.

However, those I bought were made in brown plastic and came in a box rather than a bag so I suspect these are casted in a different softer material and sold in bags as "soft series".

Be aware that the detail of the minis are a bit shallow in places (especially the fur) and there were some unsightly marks here and there from the molding process on mine. But all in all I'd rate them pretty good for their price.

Yeah, just did a quick ebay search for tehnolog and the results are great, lots of $6 for 4 deals on some nice looking large infantry models.

That reminds me, I should really pick up a ton of their bronekorpus tanks for Warpath.

Those Tehnolog centaurs do look interesting. They might be big, but that's not necessarily a problem if you multibase them.
