I'll pass, thanks. It's long been my opinion that Ghost in the Shell is overrated, and "cyberpunk" as a genre has been irrelevant since the early 1990s. And the only works of Shirow that ever appealed to me were Dominion and Appleseed.
But I'm sure that fans of Ghost in the Shell might enjoy it.

The "flesh-coloured" bodyshell thing doesn't work for me - it just looks awkward.
Other than that, GITS isn't one of my sacred cows, so I don't care how it compares to the source. I quite liked the first movie, thought the second was slow and boring and never saw the series.
This film has an interesting mix of futures; the modern "everything looks like an iPod" feel with the 80s square shapes of the cars; very Blade Runner.
I'm really looking forward to Blade Runner 2049; this, on the other hand, is just something to pass an afternoon in the meantime.

The only thing close to a tachikoma in the original movie was the tank at the end and since this seems to be a frame-by-frame translation of the first movie, I don't expect to see anything from the TV show.

Never got into the original so should not be too bothered by the changes.

I loved the original Ghost in the Shell, hell I had the collectors VCR until it was stolen and I have the original Manga DVD and I love the series (being a massive part of my childhood and all that).
However I am scared. Scared that, like many live action adaptions and especially after the last western adaption ("All you need is Kill", a great manga, terrible americanised western adaption) that they will screw this over massively. I hope they wont, but I know they probably will.

Reading the feature on the film in the latest Total Film publication, it seems like the director is really into the whole GiTS franchise and is set on making a film as faithful an adaptation of the Manga as possible. It's funny that someone mentioned a few posts above that it looks like a mix of everything, and I think that's because it is; you have bits from the first animation film (one scene was obvious in the trainer with Kusunagi kicking the guy in the head, with the ramshackle building backdrop, the spider tank is apparently in there too) but also Stand Alone Complex and the Manga. Apparently the plot cherry-picks from alot of sources.
I had severe reservations about ScaJo at first (not least because of the propensity of everything having to be set in the US with white actors) but again the more I see of it the more I think she might be suited to the role. After her performance in Under the Skin, I think she can do vacant/distant look really well and hopefully capture the essence of the Major. Pilou Asbaek is a good actor as well and definitely looks the part of Batou - liked him in Game of Thrones and before that Borgen.
So I'll go and see it, I think it's worth a shot and even a '3 star' movie for the general moviegoing public will be worth that much more to the fans of the Manga.

I don't have any problems with her as an actress. She would also be fine if they swapped the entire setting from Japan to the US (I don't recall anything about the original animated movie that relied on it being in Japan; just that that is where the creators live ); it's just having her being in Tokyo is odd. A bit like Arnie in almost anything or the bad guy from The Incredible Hulk having non-US accents, but more so.

Ghost In The Shell Is Everything Wrong With Hollywood Remakes
This is hands down Asian erasure.
It’s not just that Major was renamed the white-coded “Mira Killian” instead of the original Japanese name Motoko Kusanagi, “Ghost In the Shell” is set in Tokyo. The film is dripping in elements of Japanese culture, from the anime iconography to geishas, and koi fish to traditional sushi restaurants with low tables and visitors in elaborate robes and obis. And yet most of the main characters are white; not just Major, but also her best friend Batou (Pilou Asbæk), her mother-figure Dr. Ouelet (Juliette Binoche), her antagonizing boss (Peter Ferdinando), and the aforementioned terrorist she’s charged to track down (Pitt).
So even if anybody could have theoretically been cast to play the fully robo-figured Major, Paramount chose to cast a movie set in Japan, telling a Japanese story, and steeped in Japanese culture using primarily white actors. That sends a message about who is valued and not, and it’s a pretty insulting one that only gets more clear and offensive as the movie goes on. There are people of color in the film, filling out Major’s team. But aside from her handler (Takeshi Kitano), they barely get five lines to share between the three of them. I couldn’t tell you any of their names, because the movie only cares about them in the rare instances where Major and Batou need back-up. They’re not characters as much as conveniences.
Another shocking scene involves Major hiring a sex worker so she might touch human flesh. Instead of the short-circuiting lesbian scene from the anime, Major — who absolutely reads as a White woman — hires a Black woman so she can poke her and experiment. The optics are bad, especially in the wake of such a successful and woke film as “Get Out.”
And then things get worse!
I rarely get into third act reveals. But as was the case with “Passengers,” it’s necessary to discuss the vile story lurking beneath the slick ad campaign. When Major discovers her past, she finds out she’s actually Japanese. Her name was Motoko Kusanagi. She has a living mother who speaks English with a heavy Japanese accent. Her childhood bedroom is decked out with Japanese knickknacks, as if it’s a souvenir shop for tourists. Major is secretly Asian! And still, the filmmakers felt totally comfortable casting her as white. This reveal hits in waves of “no they didn’t” that don’t peak when Kuze discovers he’s also actually Japanese (“Your name is Hideko!”), but when Major visits her own grave, then embraces her mother as if to say, “It’s cool. I’m your rebooted white daughter! I test better globally.”

Yeah, it's pretty typical Hollywood whitewashing. And it looks like a terrible movie to boot. I would guess the whole "surprise reveal" was added to try to explain the questionable casting. But it also ironic in that it shows identity erasure as an evil....

Sadly I think that is the only facial expression she actually has and "vacant" is not an expression that I (personally, of course) have ever seen in Kusanagi's face except when her body is literally shut down.

disregarding the cultural insensitivity and its relevance to the source material, it looks like an interesting idea, but I'm not sure how well it handles its themes. The lead character's cyborg body is distractingly poor, IMO. I think I'll give it a miss.
I liked the original GitS animated movie, never saw the series and thought the second movie was slow and boring. Some nice CG effects on the floor textures in a few scenes, though.

*Claps his hands* I'm out.
I already joked to my friends this looked nothing like GiTS and was just 'Bourne Identity with robo boobies', but that synopsis is just the gak icing on crap cake.
I'm sure my best friend will rent it sometime and I'll have to pretend it isn't garbage but I am not paying to see this.
This to me is an honest shame. The theme of identity, self and what it means to be human can be incredibly powerful. However when you have to shovel off layers of rascism and generic action to get to it, it'll wind up inevietably spoiled.
Chalk this up to another piece of wasted potential.

I'm still inclined to see this despite the middling reviews. I have tried to watch the original Ghost in the Shell several times over 20 years and I just never could really get into it. I am pretty sure I watched it all the way through at least once but thought it was kind of boring but oh boy, do I have friends who love it. I'm really not much of an anime fan, to be honest.
The trailer does look good, though - I'd say 49% is in the lowermost zone of reviews for a movie I am willing to see in the theater.

I did. It certainly isn't a very action filled action movie, but I liked the basic story, really liked the music, and I think the animation and world building was done very well. And I think that the new movie captured those things very nicely as well. You could tell from the previous, but there are certainly some scenes that were visually very closely build from the original movie.
I think I have heard that the series goes deeper into the concepts explored in the movie, and some of it might be closer to what the new movie explores. With that said, I really didn't think this movie was some deep thought-provoking lesson no what it means to be really us, or that the races had much of anything to do with the story at all. So the complaints in the review felt pretty hollow and after watching it I think it's just another case of a critic finding some thin stretch to complain about PC culture or something like that.

Another review!
Ghost in the Shell film might be the most disappointing live-action reboot ever
This average action film looks so much worse through the lens of its original form.
But this pedestrian action movie looks nigh unbearable through the lens of the original series. Every bit of social commentary and science-fiction mystique that made the Japanese film and books so stunning has been wrung dry. Respect for the viewer goes into the garbage, replaced by an obnoxious, paint-by-numbers plot of good versus evil. And while I went into my screening ready to laugh off rumors of cast white-washing, I left the theater aghast at how blatantly that issue figured in the final product.

Is Batou actually Japanese? Artistically he has features Japanese artists tend to use for European males with his hair style, hair color, square jaw-line and burly body. His name doesn't mean much either because you have to take a Japanese name to get a Japanese citizenship.

A pretty fair review. Interesting that they picked one of the underlining themes in GiTs which was how cybernetics may bring the death of nationality, race and ethnicity as we understand it.

Well Batou is basically the French for boat.
So as someone who has never seen any of the ghosts in the shells..
Should I start with the anime? Anime movie? Or this movie?
Also, what bloody order are the anime movies in? Is Stand Alone Complex a sequel or is it a remake?

The Stand Alone Complex series is an alternate reality reimagining of the movie so more of a remake
so the movies Ghost in the Shell from 1995 (or its remake Ghost in the Shell 2.0 from 2008) & Ghost in the Shell Innocence is one arc
Innocence is pretty poor though it looks good
the TV series Stand Alone Complex and Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig and the movie Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society are another (the TV series were also remade as a movies Stand Alone Complex: The Laughing Man and Stand Alone Complex: Individual Eleven)
I really enjoy these and would pick the full series over the movies, but it depends on how much time you have to watch, and how much tatchicoma fun you need
There is also the TV series Stand Alone Complex: Arise which could be a prequel to either arc or an arc in itself, it was remade as a movie Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Alternative Architecture (there is also Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie that is a continuation of the plot of the Pyrophoric Cult episode)
not managed to catch up with these bit they were pretty well recieved
welcome to the complicated world of GitS

I don't think they are US special forces, as they are deployed by the Japanese government at the end of season 2. A GITS wiki says the Rangers are part of the JSDF.
