The SM models are pretty good, some models being an exception(Cents).
At the same time, the Tau battlesuits are excellent, but the vespid detract from that. They kinda remind me of those winged geonosians in Episode II.
Some 'Cron models could use an upgrade, the flayed ones are pretty old, and we need more plastic HQs.

I would say that I love every Tau model except the battlesuits.
There is only one good battlesuit: the commander.

I just like most of the stuff that Jes Goodwin has designed, regardless of faction.

Unless it is covered in skulls.

I really like the Tau (sleek, futuristic military look, not even getting into the "mechas" they look like what a futuristic army would look like) and Dark Eldar (some of the best models I've seen), just a shame the DE rules are so awful.

The Harlequins are a lot of fun to paint. They have a lot of cool details, but they are a smaller range with only a few units available.

I'm not sure if it qualifies as a "range", but I really like the Heresy stuff in the Calth and Prospero boxes. I hope they do some MkII in the future with a few other goodies.

Most of the newer sculpts are pretty nice across the entire product line. I haven't seen the Thousand Sons personally, and the faction is just not my style, but the sculpts look fantastic.

For me, the Space Marines in general have always held my fascination. That's counting both the Imperium and Chaos ones. I love the smooth look of the regular Space Marines and the sheer variation of the Chaos Marines. In particular, Thousand Sons, and Plague Marines are always awesome. You can make some great looking Sons and Plague Marines with all the GW and third party bits out there. Also, the Ghal Vorbak from 30k and the new TS bits are gorgeous.

In no particular order
Orks - Awesome looking models with some nice details but also not overly busy, vehicles look great, Killa Kans are the best Ork model and what got me to take the plunge into 40k table top. (Dawn of War won me over to the Orks in general).

Tau - Love the Fire Warrior, Crisis Suit, and Hammerhead design. Not exactly grim dark looking but I do love their sleek futuristic design with hints of Chinese/Japanese feudal armor design in the Fire Warriors and the sorta bulky robot/mecha design of the Crisis Suit. Hammerheads make me think of Star Wars episode 1 droid tanks (GW "borrowing" designs again I think).

Scions - Love the new kit with their WWI German helmet + gas mask look. Their armor is cool and the paint job GW chose for their display Scions is beautiful.

Dark Eldar - I hate elves in any fantasy setting and I hate Eldar but I do like the Dark Eldar design. Kabalite warriors are really cool, reaver jetbikes are awesome looking, and their Raiders have this cool Chinese Junk look to them.

Oooo my fav models from the ranges I listed okay I'll share.

Tau: Ghostkeel looks so sneaky and yet deadly I like its different style of head compared to typical suits, Skyray looks like a hover shark of death, Kroot I am Kroot, and the Riptide the model I set my eyes upon and knew I HAD to have and it got me into 40k.

Dark Eldar: Raider, Razorwing, Talos, Haemonuclus. I love the sleek aspect of the faction and these all speak to that. The Talos and Haemonculous are like classic evil scientist tropes cranked up to 11 and I like to think of them as Dr. Haemonstein's Monster.

Deathwatch: Corvus Blackstar. Kill Team, Watch Master. It's my rpg campaign brought to life. I had to have all of these and indeed I do. I love the black and silver scheme and the lore behind them. They seem like what space marines should have been from the start.

Astra Militarum: Baneblade, Vendetta, and Commisar. These are all quintessential IG to me from the game and seeing them in real life is awesome. I had been considering starting with IG. My top picks were Tau, DE, and then the IG. If my friend hadn't picked the IG himself I may well have started it myself.

AdMech/Skitarii: Dunecrawler and dragoons. The dunecrawler reminds me of the ice crab tank from a very good but little known show by the name of shadow raiders (war planets to the americans). The tank in that was super cool and the Dunecrawler has clearly been inspired by it. Someday I might buy a dunecrawler just to do it up in an ice scheme. Dragoons look so elegant and clunky at the same time they kinda look like old style sci fi stuff.

Assassins: Vindicare. Just looks so deadly and sneaky.

Thousands Sons: Rhubric Marines. I love them rocking the Egyptian thing.

Genestealers: Goliath Rockgrinder looks so sweet. I also like the hybrids themselves.

Shout out to Necrons as well. I like the Monolith.

This is an easy question for me; Orks are my favorite model line. I love that weathered ramshackle theme they have. Creates a nice theme throughout the entire army at the macro level but when you start picking up models and seeing the different shootas, choppas, rockit launchas etc... you begin really seeing the detail this army has at the micro level.

Wasn't an easy question at the beginning. I was beginning to build up disposable cash and decided to get back into art but wanted to do something different. I've normally worked on flat surfaces using inks, paints or leads so this time I wanted to try models. Searched for the best models on the market which lead me to GW. Spent more then half a year reading and researching the army models and fluff. I was hooked with Orks and after a few months of more planning I began my project.

I'm learning fast and obsessed with the details. I want every tooth, belt buckle, beady eye, chip and scrape painted even on the basic troops. These Boyz have no shortage. And the trukks! Wow for a 30 points base common transport the sheer amount of detail put into it is pretty staggering. All before I even get into weathering it up. A worthy challenge that I was looking for.

tl:dr - Orks, no regrets.

It's a tough call for me. I think in the end is probably go with Orks. I think they have the potential for the most unique conversions, even variation in general. You can go bright colors, muddled ones, have boyz with iron gobs, boyz in eavy armor, trukks, lootas, etc. All other armies have similar lists, but I find orks just tend to stand out that way.

In terms of pure aesthetics, either dark or craftworld eldar. Their models sleek and very well done, even the aspect warriors and guardians.

I love this thread It's nice to see positivity!

My favourites would have to be all the weird and wonderful ones- the old daemons, the dark eldar wracks, the eldar vyper and falcon, the old metal chaos terminators... I could sit here for ages typing this stuff!

I think I just always liked the little details and the attention that seemed to have gone into the creation of these things. There's a lot of inspiration to find there

Oh, the latest batch of jetbikes (Windriders, Reavers and Skyweavers) are utterly beautiful. Such a sense of both breakneck speed and general delicacy of design to them.

Skitarii and Knights are great, the whole admech range has great models. Their models got me into 40k.
Dark Eldar also has some of the best models in the game, love the alien space pirate look on them and the Voidraven is my favorite looking plane in the 40k setting.
The HQ models from the Necron range are also lovely.

I love my Wolves and Nids.
Favorite thing about my Wolves is making the bikes, Wolf Guard and Priests are my particular favorites, to hell with helmets! Beards, braids and storm shields on the Wolf Guard plus hoodies and wolf skull masks on the priests make them look like a cross between the retiree biker gangs and viking cavalry.
Least favorite thing about the Space Wolf model range is the Fen Wolves and Cyber Wolves. Six poses between them...makes me sad, had to buff out my packs with The Hobbit and LOTR Wargs.

Love my big, stompy Nids.
Hate, HATE transporting them.

They sure didn't have Space Marine helmets.
What they had was very recognisable hairdos and big, round shields though.

By that logic they weren't using any of the other gear you mentionned, nor were their big round shields able to protect them from artillery strikes.
