I stick to my three armies
Imperial guard
Admech
Ironwarrior (used in 30&40k)
The fact that I do alot of kitbashing and customization, makes it so I don't really get bored or look at other armies and go "oh man that's really cool, I want that" cause I'm too busy figuring how to get the look I want, mixing pieces, searching 3rd party sites, other model like, occasionally scratchbuilding or sculpting if i can find what I'm looking for. I've got my head buried so far under the numerous ideas that just dont notice more often than not.
That one aspect of it, the other is I build a "Ideal army" in my head, a list of all the units I could need or want to run any 2000pt list. I write those lists down in order of how regularly i would use them, then see how much of every unit i would need to build all of those lists. so say my largest infantry list needs 300 conscript but the one i would run most frequently needs 150 so I set my goal at 150 and set the other 150 aside for after i complete more frequently used list. This not only sets a goal for me to work towards but also lets me budget things out and even set a timeline to build and paint by so I'm never really in a lul or looking for something to do. I also rotate which unit and army I work on I don't really get burnt out.

The enemies of Mankind may employ dark sciences or alien weapons beyond Humanity's ken, but such deviance comes to naught in the face of honest human intolerance back by a sufficient number of guns. |

The way I resist is self-control.
With 5th edition, I was planning to build a Salamanders army. So I started collecting models, only purchasing them at big discounts. Auctions won on eBay, stores going out of business, acquisitions from people leaving the game, extra models sitting around from a boxed set, etc.
There's at least 6k points of models sitting around, and I have a short list of the other stuff I would likely need to buy. When I do start building, it's going to be the army I want.
But now I am at the point where I don't really know what SM army I would want to build. Based on stuff sitting around on shelves, I would be just as likely to build an Ork army.
So, discipline around purchases. I have what I need, but it would take more to get me to move on it.

I do know because I have more than enough armies. It is pretty easy as the prices are so high on starting from scratch. There is also the Mrs Captain Brown factor as she knows all the armies I have and would do horrible things to me if I started another.
Cheers,
CB
PS: If I was ever unable to resist I would look on eBay for someone dumping one that is in poor condition and repairing it.

When I first started, I resisted fairly poorly. Nowadays, I tend to focus less on shiny rules and more on "will this army let me do cool conversions/kitbashes?" So I decided I'd stick with Chaos. I wanted an army that could do both "whacky" conversions ala Orks, and more serious/"ornate" conversions. From there, my answer was "practice."
For now, I'm holding off on buying new kits (a notable exception last week, as I saw a box of Tomb King Horsemen at the LGS and snatched it up), and working on clearing out the Bitz Box. I've learned a lot of random tricks, be it carving up sprue for spare legs, to the fact that Ogre Ironfists make passable "torsos" for Goblins or Dwarves when bulked up. I resort more to bit trading rather than new purchases, and analyze kits from a "can I poorhammer it" and a "can I bash it?" I'll donate stuff I know I won't get around of course.
Perhaps the most notable thing I'm doing now, is storing everything in a single Plano case. Since I'm in NYC, and walk to game, I can appreciate "too many minis" from a weight perspective. The bitz are currently in two large plastic ziplocks, but I'm looking for a better way to sort them out.

I buy the books. That way I fill my need for story and don't allow myself to buy models till I am done with a book. That and I allow my wife to buy me the models that way its like Christmas/Birthday when I get new models.

I hear you.
I am in the unfortunate position of having dropped a few hundred on Death Guard at the start of the year, to build a vectorium... only to have half my army 'invalidated' by the new DG in the Index (so goodbye Heldrakes, Obliterators, Havocs and Bikes, which made up about 75% of my army).
Yeah, there were a few swear words when I read the Index.
Yes, I know I can ally them in as CSM. I don't want to do that - I want them to be DG.
Yes, I know some of those units don't fit the fluff. So why were they in the Vectorium?
I just feel majorly let down - and now, lesson learned; no more impulse army-starting. Having already scratch-built thirty plague marines, I feel no compulsion to buy new ones (hate the sculpts anyway; upsized and bad cartoon comedy models), I don't want to run Typhus-Poxwalker horde (again, awful models, just embarrassingly bad).
Mortarion might get a look in, but he's going to cost an arm and a leg, and I feel very reticent to sink any more money in to what seems like a lost cause.

Like others have suggested I only play painted now. That has done wonders to stay my buying habits for most miniature games. It has, however, encouraged me to buy more X-wing...

I own many armies, because my usual MO is to build to 2000-3000 points and then start a new project, but I only play with painted models, and I paint very quickly to a decent standard. At the moment, I've been getting about 85% of my hobby budget from commission painting, so that helps to funnel my purchases.
Unfortunately, I've nabbed a few "once in a lifetime" deals on large model lots recently, so my unpainted pile has swelled to almost 60 models, but I've held off buying anything for a while to try and get through them.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

Generally I try to figure out a way to counter it with my army and it keeps my interest from straying too far. Other than that it is painting and converting what is unfinished on my shelves.

I don't. If I want it, and I can afford it, I get it.
I don't NEED it. I have more than enough still to build and paint right now.

For me it's pretty easy to resist. I pick my armies based on the background story. I don't care if it's the new tournament hotness.
