Wonderful words and very accurate.

In these days of instant internet outrage, I'm surprised dakka search comes up with nothing, and there obviously wasn't any reaction to this show of contempt for their own readers on GW's side considering the tweet is still up almost 1 months later.

I would make a snarky comment about proving him right by missing the context, but I want to be fair and can't assume English is your primary language. In any case, he is not being serious, and reading his entire tweet thread should make it clear that he is humorously writing in the persona of the monster role he often plays in the complaints of displeased fans. It's like when customers claim retail workers have ruined Christmas, and the workers sarcastically pretend they love it.

I mean, the problem here is that people post stupid gak like what JR wrote all the time, and it's impossible to tell those who're being sarcastic from those who mean what they write with 100% sincerity.

So it's less an issue of language and more Poe's law.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

Also, there's all the "Warhammer Fantasy was played out and boring and we're so glad we can discard all that and write something totally new" sentiment that bubbled up out of BL regarding AoS. That might all have been mandated marketing-speak, but I doubt it, and that makes me doubt whether remarks like the one in the OP are less "har har funny japes" and more "what I actually think but phrased in a way that gives plausible deniability har har only kidding...".

Aren’t you conflating two entirely separate sentiments?

1) we feel this setting is stifling creativity and a new setting would provide more storytelling opportunities.

2) ha ha ha, man children are sad and this brings me pleasure because I get my jollys from making my customers sad.

Too pure for this world, sadly for us his cocaine wasn't

Anyhow, for a guy getting paid to kill of Fantasy (even though I think AoS can go die in a hole) he probably received a lot more hate than this mild response would let on. I just don't see the outrage in this.

I never once heard that sentiment. In fact, I heard the opposite from some authors, authors who preferred writing stories in the Old World, who kept writing for BL even during the dark times because they loved the setting. The BL authors who felt stifled or bored moved on. There was an interview with the editor at BL during the end of the Kirby years where he described how much GW kept yanking around the authors, and it was love of the settings and the team that kept many of them from leaving for good.

No, I'm saying that the first makes it easier to believe they could actually hold some level of belief in the second, because when creatives don't particularly care for a setting and fans do, said creatives tend to hold said fans in some level of disdain.

I saw those kinds of sentiments expressed regarding the Heresy and 40K, but not WHF, and if you hadn't once heard the other view then tbh you can't have been paying much attention, "we can be more creative now" is a running theme when AoS authors do their promo stuff.

Meh is this the BL hack who had to close his blog after threatening physical abuse to a unhappy fan, because he was a ninja or ufc champ or some bollocks.

Or is it another one of the sad hacks who had dreams of being a writer but has had to settle for working for BL, the crushing of his dreams leads to a strange self loathing that manifests as abuse of the fan base of the brand he has come to hate.

I have seen it with a number of franchises and it is kind of sad, if they hate the setting or fan base so much they should go back to whatever job the used have. Oh no they like the money too much and this leads to the self loathing that results in abuse of the fan base.

Anecdotal I know but anytime I have seen a BL writer speak away from GW a lot of them have been douches. Obviously not all but a fair few nether the less.

Your last point is especially laughable and comical, because not only the 7th ed Valkyrie shown dumber things (like being able to throw the troopers without parachutes out of its hatches, no harm done) - Irbis

There is a huge difference between saying "We can be more creative now" and "The old setting was stifling us". For one thing, the first is an attempt to put a positive spin on a situation. For a second, it is clearly a party line they must toe. For a third, BL authors who felt stifled left. Warhammer isn't a setting people have to write for just to make a buck--it's too obscure to draw in anyone who isn't a fan in some form.

I think you are determined to see the worst everywhere, even when it seems clear the author is exaggerating to prove his words are the opposite of his true feelings.

I have never a writer for some franchise pissing off all of the fanbase. Not that I like fanbases to begin with, the idea of a "fan" is absolutely abhorrent for me, and I have been following the warcraft universe with dedication for the past 14 years, but I would never call myself a fan.

A fanbase is not a hive mind. They don't all have the same interests, the same dedication, or like the same parts of the setting. So is absolutely possible for a worker/author/creative guy/girl from a franchise to call out some sellf called fans of the franchise. But abusing the whole fanbase? Thats something only the corporation behind the setting can do, with politics like the kirby era GW ones, or some of the nu-GW politics.

Of course this doesn't mean authors that are imbeciles don't exist. Of course they do, they are humans, and all kind of humans in every position, gender, sex, or age can be a stupid piece of s***.

This particular fan base makes death threats to authors of children's books and freaks the hell out about women and minorities being represented in the game. Fan bases that heavily overlap this one, threaten to rape actresses and women game developers. It's bananas. Hell, guys are flipping out because the She-Ra reboot isn't "sexy" enough. I don't know if "nerd rage" has intensified over the last decade or so, or if fanboys have always been awful people.

If an author wants to pick on how pathetic people can be, I'll probably find it hilarious and true, haha.

No, it doesnt. A small and vocal part of this fanbase (a part which would include the man-children referred to in the tweet that inspired this thread) does that.

Please retain from tarring all of us with that same brush. Most of the fanbase isn't like that at all.

Well I'm not talking about everyone who has an interest in tabletop games, scifi, fantasy, video games, etc...I mean...here I am. I certainly don't have any issues with fair representation, nor do my friends. That said, I don't know that I'd say it's a small part of the community that does. There are YouTube lore channels with 100,000+ followers that regularly post videos complaining about feminist, and minorities trying to change the hobby as opposed to just being happy with the prospects of getting more model options.

I'm not saying that you're wrong and I'm right... I certainly hope you're right and that I'm just over reacting to what I've seen. It's just disconcerting to see, what I perceive as sooo many nerds being racist and sexist over something that everyone should be able to immerse themselves in without any concerns about nerd ragings.
