Already had a G&T talking to my folks. So while not drunk yet, my baseline is not zero. And I don’t measure when pouring.

See you all in two hours.

update one while I wait a few minutes for the first sloppy basecoat to dry

Sloppy basecoats down. While the RTB01 might be a little light on detail, which makes it good to paint while inebriated, helmet stripes and armor studs are not the drunkard’s friends. Next up will be to drybrush the blacks with silvers, and then a clean up pass on the blues.

OK, clean up pass with the blue and the dry brushing is done. Next step will be the blue ink glaze. I’m less worried about screwing up the mini (I can strip it) or wrecking my brush (I’m using an old crappy one for this project) but the blue ink I use is a vintage Cote D’arms era paint, and if I spill it in my drunken haze I’ll be PISSED. Going to have to be very careful. One of these days I need to actually place an order with them and refresh some of my old paints that GW no longer makes. Timing so far is pretty good. Less then an hour in. And for those keeping track, I am a bit drunk at this point. Could feel it as I walked to the laptop to make the update while the paint dries a bit.

For those interested, I’m drinking an Old Fashioned. Classicly, you muddle some cherries and orange with a sugar cube in the bottom of a glass, add a few shots of Angostura bitters, bourbon and ice. Last time I had oranges in the house, I soaked some of the peels in some rye whiskey (as I don’t often keep fresh citrus around). I also forgo the muddeling and the sugar cube, and just use a shot of maple syrup. We do what we must i these trying times.

OK, that should be enough rambling to kill time, Time to glaze.

OK, done with that step. Nothing spilled. Normally I leave a lot of time between coats for the paint to cure. Sometimes when you glaze/shae/wash, it dissolves the layers beneath a bit. I noticed this with Nulan Oil on Salamanders. If I wasn’t drunk and speed painting, I’d stop for the night. Would have done so before the last coat. This is also very relevent when working in parts. I have to be VERY careful with the bolter arm not to rub off layers. The handle prevents that with the marine. The next step once the glaze dries a bit is to go back over the whites and pop them out. I base them in an off white (today Grey Seer, although I normally use and old pot of Elf Grey) but they will get a dab of codex white to make them pop. I also use the soulstone green gloss on the eye lenses.

OK, that hopefully is enough dry time. Time to stagger back to the bench.

OK, that’s both the mini and my drink done. Next step is to do the base work and decals. I think I’ll skip the decals for now, as that requires knife work. I should have half an hour or so left, so I’ll give the glue on the arm a chance to dry, then smear some flock around. I think he’ll forgo the normal tuft/rock being glued on, as the PVA I use for that is going to take too long to set. Not everyone in the squad needs a base detail anyway.

I’ll pour myself a digestif to do the base work. I’ve got some limoncello in the freezer.

That’s a wrap folks.

I might grab some formal shots, but that would require more work then I’m willing to put in right now.

Was fun. Remember to drink plenty of water and a few painkillers. And don’t drive.

Edit with slightly better final pic.

greatbigtree, Maharg, Nevelon... cheers to you three! This was too cool of a challenge to let it slip by, so here's my hobby output and my hoppy input.

I had an old Inquisitorial scribe that had been painted and stripped twice and was looking a little sad. He deserved a better cleanup job, but there was no time. He's a good entry for this contest and also a good prop for my League of Extraordinary Riveters entry next month, which will be a medical facility at an frontier industrial colony. Speaking of, please check out the LoER contest and think about an entry!

Details and beverage selections in spoliers.
Spoiler:

Primed in white. Voodoo Ranger IPA from New Belgium. Start the clock!

It took most of an hour and most of a beer to put the colors down.

Round 2: Top of the second hour and second brew. Incredible Pedal IPA from Denver Beer Co. Ready to throw down some washes.

Apothecary White Contrast paint was a solid asset.

Finished painting and prepped for a base... which I hadn't made yet. Fifteen minutes on the clock to cut, trim, glue, spray, and wash a base.

And, finished... 2 nice craft beers and one painted model in two hours. Now to write the post with beer #3... a Fresh Haze IPA from Deschutes.

Couldn't be doing with step by step, worked twelve hours and after a few bevies it was too much to ask!
But I did get a couple of Droideka done (mostly, possibly), sorry for the terrible photos, what can I say? I was drunk... Actually they are probably no worse than normal.

Good stuff folks!

So since this is no longer a one horse race... would we (people with pictures!) like to extend the deadline by one week, or shall we have a vote based on current submissions?

I’m just here for the fun, not the vote. If we want to leave this open and have more people join, that’s fine by me. The more the merrier.

I'm in the keep it open for another weekend... getting drunk and painting doesn't seem like a weekday thing for most people.

But we'd need at least one more vote from someone with a picture to make it a majority. Plus, you know, greater glory to the victor with more people involved. So I suppose if we could get one more person swayed we could extend the deadline to Monday, June 1?

I just stumbled across this thread. Pun mostly intended.

If the consensus is to leave it open, I would like to give an entry a try.
I'm sober at the moment, or I would dive into it now. It's still technically morning here right now, and I have a few things to do. I would expect some wife-aggro if she came home to me stumbling around the garage in a drunken, paint-splattered stupor.

Well... if you posted a picture of the model you intend to paint, that would give us 6 people with pictures and I think a 50% would be sufficient to keep the vote open for one more week.

[Painting one-offs is the closest I have to fun when painting minis. Usually it’s just for the results, but one-offs get close to what I’d call fun. More the merrier and all that!]

It would likely be this truck for Gaslands.

Or, if I don't end up drunk painting tonight, which is possible, I might do this one instead:

But the jeep still needs some work. Some gs crew members, some detail work to the still in the trailer, and one more build slot worth of weaponry. I'm thinking an old geezer in the trailer drinking from the still and firing a mortar, or possibly just filling molotov cocktails from the still. One of the possible trailer upgrades is a still that gives unlimited ammo to my molotov's.

Either way, they are sponsored by Rusty's Bootleggers, so fit the competition nicely. They run moonshine and are all basically driving around drunk. They have special perks called, "Party Hard", "Dutch Courage", "Over the Limit", and "As Straight as I'm Able".

It only seems fitting to paint them as straight as I'm able, while imbibing the entire time.

I'm in the more-the-merrier camp... I dont know if Mad Doc Grotsnik wants to guide this one way or the other, but end of month sounds reasonable. Good job, everyone!

In light of my hijacking, I believe the good Doctor needs to get a photo of something in for his vote to count...

( )

Also, in-line with my previous tyrannical decree, I believe we have a majority of picture-posters in agreement with extending to next weekend. So the official, set in stone deadline is now next Monday.

(This is a Dick-tatorship. This was really just a farce of Democracy for the masses, to trick more people into putting up pictures of their drunken miscreantism. The records are being logged as we speak...)

Nice work Nevelon, Macphail and Ingtaer. Looking forward to what you come up with DJJazzyJeff and capt.dunc.

Thought I'd post a beer by beer summary of my entry and some better photos
Spoiler:

beer 1 opened, ready to go

20 mins in, onto beer 2, rough base colours down.

45 mins, beer three, base coats neatened

About an hour in, another beer, highlights started. Starting to feel the beer now, just as I have to do the face.. but get away with it

half an hour to go, more beer down and yellow started. Wish I'd realised how thin this pot of yellow was before starting, going to need several coats, too late to change now though

just 15 mins left, one more drink to get me through the final push.

And the finished model, well almost finished, time ran out during the fourth coat of yellow

Drunken Master,
"It is the hour to be drunken! to escape being the martyred slaves of time, be ceaselessly drunk. On wine, on poetry, or on virtue, as you wish."
-Charles Baudelaire

I submit my own drunken craftiness for the review and judgement of my fellow drunken masters.

First, some Tennesse Honey Whiskey.

And the finished vehicle, complete with drunk driver, drunk copilot, drunk gunner, and drunk artist:

Play by play, and drink for drink in the spoiler:

Spoiler:

So I had a Bloody Mary before I even began this project, so I'm starting at a level of inebriation above zero.

The truck painted blue, and the whiskey depleted.

Whiskey is gone, but the faces are done on the driver and copilot. Going to seal up the cabin, but I'll know they're in there. Also, put a box full of straw and molotov cocktails. Enough to light on fire and throw, and enough to drink to keep yourself drunk for the duration.

They look far less "messed up" and more like actual people when they're painted. They could even escape the 'mutant' or 'horribly burned' fluff stories that I've proposed so far.

A second whiskey to work out how much of the truck would be visible, and how much would be covered by each successive layer of truck. Plus, it's probably time to switch to beer, so the Sam Adams makes an appearance.

But, then a third whiskey, because why not. Starting to put together the truck, looking to the turret mounted minigun in the bed.

The front window covered in armor plating and the minigun mounted.

And then the dude in the back manning the minigun:

Plus, mounted a bottle opener on my workbench, so I can have quick access in the future. Also, two more Sam Adams while I did that and typed this up.

I was about four minutes over the two hours, but there was a point where I glued my fingers together and had to run get the nail polish remover. I think it evens out.

How about we make this an ongoing, fortnightly thing instead? Anyone sober enough raise your hand.

As a new user, you might have issues. I think there are some restrictions to keep spambots at bay.

Click on the “gallery” link at the top of the page, then "Upload your wargaming image”

This will bring up a screen where you can click the buttons to open a browser to choose.

Once you are done with that, you go to the next screen where you can name them, choose galleries, etc.

Once you have uploaded them, go to your gallery. When you choose the picture there will be a bunch of links off to the side you can use to point to them. Copy the one for forums.

Hope that helps.

2 hours, unknown Napoleonic man, he came free in an order. he's from wargames foundry, no idea what nation he should represent but I've gone for some kind of British. I'd started drinking before starting this, but I assume that's allowed. I'm starting from scratch, no basing, no undercoating, no filling and I'm only going to use; red, yellow, blue, black, and white, along with silver and gold. I'll mix everything else needed.

I was watching a video the other day by Tabletop minions, talking about using covid down time to try new stuff as opposed to plowing through the mountain of unpainted gak. so this is done with few colours in that spirit, and the miniature (when cured) is destined to be my second ever oil wash.

Hopefully the right way up, 1/4 through timewise, model cleaned of flash/lines, based, polyfillered, undercoated and started on colours

I'd thought that re-cropping photos in an additional program and saving to an additional file would sort my orientation. No matter, drink for 2 hours yourself and they'll look correct.

photos at half time, 3/4, and finish. I did another 20 mins on the model to complete stage one, i felt this was fair given that I did all the prep and basing as well. I'll post those photos, and the results of the oil finish much later. This is my 2 hour model, with a drink or 4.

Nice one, love that red. Not an expert in the field but pretty sure that guy is a French Carabinier, the fore runners (kind of) of their Voltigeur companies.

Re: ongoing “competition”

How about once a month? I’m not sure I could keep up with every other week (not that big of a drinker ) but I could probably have my arm twisted into a once a month thing. Makes cut-off times easy to figure out.

Hey, drink at a comfortable pace! We don’t want anyone to chuff their cookies all over a freshly painted model!

Exceptions for Nurgle, I suppose, but still discouraged.

Aye, its a painting challenge that includes drinking, not a drinking challenge that includes painting.

Excellent, lets make it a monthly thing. Just got some new Star Wars toys arrive which will be next months victim.

Cheers ingtaer, i've got 2 different napoleonics, i'd tried to ID the first but struggled, I'd pinned the first as french so did him in blue, with this second I was more interested in getting going with the speed painting, and since he was destined for oil washing practice and learning, I went with red, so i could learn more about how the colours underneath work with the oil wash. But many thanks.

got some oil on tonight, well outside the 2 hours, but thought i'd put it here to keep the progressions of 1 miniature in 1 place.
