In the Battletech PC game, the probabilities of any action are explicitly displayed to you... except then the game cheats behind the scenes, reducing the probability of low-probability events (so that rare outcomes happen less often) and increasing the probability of high-probability events (so that the 'sure thing' really is a sure thing).

Basically initial beta testing found that when they used the actual probabilities, people got frustrated- even though the outcomes were perfectly probabilistic- because our perception of probability is not very good. So they massaged the behavior and then players found it more acceptable.

I don't mean this as an accusation against you and I'm not very familiar with the PC version of Blood Bowl; just thought it's an amusing anecdote as relates to the things we remember from our games.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

That's a really interesting point Catbarf.

As was said on the previous page, it might just be that it was an extreme probability. Perhaps it is more representative of the hundreds of hours (I dread to think how many!) I have spent on the game, and the chances are something like that would happen!

I have found the probability of a Dwarf 'going for it', then failing and dying, is extremely statistically unlikely - and yet I can remember this happening at least a couple of times over the years (it might just stick in the memory as the instance is so damned humorous!)

If this was a physical game the question of accuracy of the rolling probably wouldn't arise, other than for the very occasional accusation of loaded dice! Although I have (fortunately) never knowingly come across that in all of my years of wargaming.

Playing at a school club with a CSM friend, I have a stealth team that's been harassing him with the move, shoot, jump pack rule.
He finally catches my stealth team with some khorne berserkers, kills 2/3, the team leader makes the morale save and somehow kills the champion in hand to hand.
My mate is super annoyed and so does the all out rage thing so where he get loads of dice rolls, but if you rolled triple sixes then the warp blows their heads up.
Guess what he rolled?
The stealth suit survived that game...

In the first edition of Apocalypse you could call down a very large blast marker (Essentially four of the apocalypse large) on a vox operator. Essentially "fire on my position" it was of couse subject to scatter, and if it scatter the model calling in the strike would be dead.

I did it on the last survivor of a guard squad. Not just once, but twice, with no scatter. I think that vox operator killed more in those two strikes than any other model in my army through multiple games.

A buddy and I were playing 40k. He was playing his guard vs my CSM. I had a Khorne Berzerker(last man alive in the squad) charge Nork Deddog. Nork and the 1 Berzerker were locked in combat for like 3 turns doing absolutely nothing to each other. Then Nork finally killed the Berzerker with his one shot head butt ability. Epic duel of the fates stuff.

And killed with a headbutt.

Way back in like 1994 lol, was playing the Battle for Mauthrod (sp?!) Pass scenario from the Warhammer core box, back when relative unit strength wasn't a thing for combat res and ranks had to be full to count....

Unit of 20 Goblin Spearmen charge a single surviving Elf Archer. They fail to kill him for 3 rounds of combat, whilst each turn he kills a single Goblin, and the now 17 remaining Goblins break and get run down. Archer then charges and puts a single wound on Grom, sadly followed by Grom turning him into a large red smear.

Those are the best ones in terms of odds, its incredible how certain things happen. In the older editions it was compounded because you had the exploding '1' (fumble) results, which meant you could get a marine commander running in, rolling a fist-full of ones, and I should imagine narrative-wise tripping over his shoe laces and getting a rifle butt to the face from an Imperial Guardsman.

Not in the wargame, but in the online game of Blood Bowl (which I guess is pretty much the same rules wise) I had someone block my human lineman with a Str 7 Treeman (so three dice). He wrote in the chat beforehand "So what size coffin will it be?"
He then proceeded to roll triple skull > Re-roll, triple skull again > injury = dead > used an apothecary, injury = dead
I then replied "I guess a treeman sized coffin?" and the guy disconnected

Honestly I have got no idea about the odds for that (I would have thought many tens of thousands to one), although I have always had my suspicions about how the random dice rolling works in the Bloodbowl computer game, just because there are too many instances of utterly insane probabilities happening!

Love it.
I have a bloodbowl one. Championship of the season (this was almost 20 years ago so whatever edition). My team had a minotaur who in that system was hell on wheels but like half your team. Well, he has the ball, is going for the winning score, and the only play left for my opponent is to run a guy from the sideline and tackle him (the only way he could reach him before he scored). So onto the field comes Nosepicker, his lowly goblin equipment manager. Zero chance. Dice rolled, goblin's head ripped off, Minotaur berserk, ball tossed randomly to his fastest guy, who scores.

Keeping the hobby side alive!

Ooohh, time to repeat the infamous "inverted predator" incident.

Back in 2nd ed, eldar had a weapon called the Distortion cannon ( a d-cannon nowadays) which had a table you had to roll on to see what happened when it fired..it opened warp holes and drops things through them, like an advanced Shokk attak gun).

So, I fired mine at my firend's Predator, with the result it was sent randomly around the battlefield and up into the air.

Employing the Scatter dice, we discovered that it rematerialised right above his land raider, so dropped and landed on it.

We decided to resolve this as a ram, result.. land raider no damage, Predator immobilised.

For the rest of the game, his land raider drove around with a predator effectively acting as 3 extra sponson weapons on top of it.

Gosh I miss 2nd ed's completely bonkersness.

That reminds me of when my Treeman (using the Citadel Journal Forest Folk team) caught a scattering ball from kick off, and spent the entire half rolling towards the end zone......ofc he doesn't have enough move to get there and I ultimately failed to score as he stacked it going for extra squares in turn 7 :( (yeah I could have handed it off, but how often does the opportunity to score with a Treeman come up?!)

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

Defeated a 2000 points Ulthwe Strike Force army with nothing but a single Callidus Assassin.

To this day we don't know how that battle ended up that way, but that single Assassin bounced from unit to unit, stunning War Walkers and Vypers, killing Guardians a plenty, and always getting away.

The rest of my Guard army got a couple of Autocannon shots off, and took a few casualties, but as the Eldar army was crammed into a corner out of LOS for the entire game, they pretty much did nothing else.

It was 5-6 turns of pure pain before my opponent conceded.

A warp lightning cannon exploded by misfire, killing a Skaven crewman manning one of the warp lightning cannons. The rest of the crew fled, then the chieftan fled, then the other warp lightning cannon fled, then half the clanrats fled, then the plague monks fled, then the other half of the clanrats fled. My entire Skaven army fled off the board before anyone could get in spear range because of a misfire.

On a lesser note, two hardened space marines spending half the game running all over the map to avoid getting run over by a Leman Russ tank like the boulder scene in Indiana Jones.

2 things. One was some time in 5th when we placed a match of characters vs characters. A Big Mek used his gun and sucked 3 chaos hq's into the warp including abaddon in the same shot. It wasn't my Big Mek but we had a good laugh. Pretty sure abaddon just let out a big sigh when he got sucked into the warp.

The other super funny moment i had was when i knew i was gonna lose vs lizardmen with my skaven (this was back in 8th ed WHFB) so i charged down a hill in an epic showdown vs temple guard i think with plague monks and either a plague priest or a plague priest on a plague furnace. I cast some augment spell since i made it into combat with all 6 dice because you could do that i think and cast it off irresistibly and with a miscast. I then say "I hope i blow up" to which i do in miscast results and the large template was focused over both our units. I lost sure but i took out a bunch of temple guard at a cost to plague monks but point for point it was a huge win. Sure i lost the game but even my opponent was laughing hard about it. He said it was unlike any game he'd played previously. Good times.

Mine would be a weird thing that happened at a Local Gaming Convention.

While attending a local game convention we ran into some guys that we only knew from the convention. One of them had just bought a new game at one of the retail booths and asked if we would be interested in rather playing it instead of what we planned for the next round. Since we were interested in the new game and the guys were super nice to hang out with it was an easy yes. We sit down at a random table and started playing. After a short while, one of the convention workers approached us saying the table we were using was already marked for another game that next round, but they would be happy to find us another table to use. They put us in a basement area of the convention hall and found out the area was being used for a Vampire LARP game. Drastically every few minutes our whole table would get distracted by screaming or yelling from the overacting of the LARP players. From what we could tell, the combat they were using was a form of "chicken" fight where you balance by holding one leg and pushing into one another like sumo wrestlers but can only use your body, no hand or arms. Very entertaining to watch...

It went on for a while...Then BOOM !!

A big guy had gotten hit hard and was on the ground, a ton of people crowded around. Didn't seem bad we thought, just someone fell over and went back to our game. Then the paramedics and campus police showed up. They hauled the guy out and the LARP game disbanded. Got really quiet after that and we went back to finish our game. But I always have a story.

Ah, there were several funny incidents over the years. Just to name a few:

1) First or 2nd turn of 3rd 40K: My NL Havoc squad (3x Lascannon & 1x Missile Launcher) shoots at a LRBT from the front (AV14). Lascannons bounce off but Krak missile destroys it.
Several months later...Same thing happens again!

2) Blood Bowl league in the 90s: An acquaintance of mine plays Undead with the expensive Vampire star player. Opponent plays Navy Press Gang on his team before the match. Random player from the team is forced to join the Navy (and thus eliminated from team PERMANENTLY) but there is a slim chance that he makes it back after the match ends. Suffice to say...he didn´t succeed.
Up to this day there is a vampire rocking shades and Sunblocker 9000 while manning the oars of an Imperial vessel.

3) WHFB 4-player game prior to 8th: My Khemri army managed to resurrect ALL of it´s fallen models during the battle. Needlessly to say we won the game.

4) 40K 3rd: My Catachan Colonel destroys in one turn two scarab bases with his Power fist (Instant Death rule). Next turn he wastes two Wraiths. Necron Lord gets frustrated by the futile efforts of his minions and charges the Colonel himself...only to miss with all his attacks and getting removed from play by the officer. Colonel survives the game with one remaining wound.

5) Just last week I did a single-player battle report for 2nd 40K (to be found in the Battle Report section): Genestealers automatically hit a slow-moving Landspeeder. All hits penetrate, worst damage result gets applied. Skimmer changes direction by almost 180°, travels a short distance in this direction, crashes and explodes. Explosion hits a friendly Rhino and ALL objective cargo containers.
One container gets destroyed and the other two only suffered severe damage. Shrapnel penetrates Rhino armour and worst result on damage table occurs again.
On next activation, Rhino veers 45° to the right and rams the cargo containers and explodes. Luckily the explosion this time doesn´t damage a friendly Dreadnought.

Two spring to mind.

I'm at a tournament in 6th ed. My Blood Angels are facing off against an Imperial Guard Leman Russ tank part
Long story short, the start of my second turn I have 1 guy left in the entire army. An assault marine with a meltagun hiding in the woods.
No matter, he's gonna go down with at least one tank kill!

He's survived the firepower of about 3 Leman Russ tanks pulverising him, sheltered by the woods. Seeing his chance, he powers up the jump pack to thrust himself on top of an enemy tank for the killing blow.
He bangs his head on a branch. He fails his armour save. He dies. Nevermind then.

Next up was also 6th edition.
I'm playing against Orks, he's running all 10 man blobs in Trukks, I advance forwards my 10 man Terminator squad supported by an Apothecary.
Orks drive up, shoot my Terminators. Their pistols alone kill all 8 Terminators, well gak.
Not content with the overkill, he proceeds to charge my now alone Apothecary with 7 full mobs of Orks.
Of course, there's only 1 Apothecary so hardly anyone can fit, and none of the Nobs with the powerklaws.
Not backing down from the overwhelming odds, he survives all the attacks, and kills a couple of Boyz for their trouble.
He's now won combat. The mobz are too small to be fearless, the first mob of Orks breaks and runs, then the second, then the third, then the fourth...
Every single mob breaks and runs. That means he's eligible to sweeping advance. He catches every single mob.
One Apothecary has just survived, seen off, and butchered about 70 Orks in a single combat phase. The legend.

It was just nuts, the whole thing became more and more absurd with each subsequent dice roll.
