Gornall wrote:I'm interested to hear whether Thor figured out Arnheiner's code.

I presume you mean Stynier's subtle assassin code?

The answer is I did - but not till too late. My initial assault on him was a legitimate belief that he was indeed using it as a phrase to try to paint me in a scummy light for later. I pressured him on it and his answers were strange so I knew something was up but wasn't really sure what. Honestly when Arheiner flipped loyalist I was slightly close to killing Stynier, but knew that if I targeted wrong we were dead. I went back and re-read and that's when I got an inkling that maybe what he had been saying was Inquisitor-speech (and a good thing to get out, it's always nice for an investigative role to drop some hints to their investigations in case they are night killed. Risky to do of course, but very helpful if they're killed before their time.) At that point I was getting a strong mix of Inquisitor/scum on Stynier and a strong scum feel from Gornall. I wasn't sure who any partners were, and knew that if I targeted the wrong person Imperium would auto-lose, so I didn't kill anyone...and then my nose was chopped off.

If I had figured his code out immediately then I would never have made a fuss about the wording, as that would be a bad move to potentially draw attention to an Inquisitor doing a soft reveal of his role. Also, since usually (in Mafia games I play in) all an Inquisitor style roll can learn is pro-town or anti-town I suppose I'll explain my error by not expecting him to have total role reveal powers, so I didn't think of it right away. (not that I'm sure I would have twigged to his code right away in any case, but it seems a reasonable excuse)

Well played you genestealer scum, well played, I enjoyed the match quite alot.

Going into the game I was a bit surprised by the fact I had been selected as the Inquisitor, beings my first (Thor's) game I was the Inquisitor and in Manchu's game I was one of the scum bags. I thought for sure I would have been one of the first killed due to that.

With n0t_u, I had no real idea that he could have been the other genestealer. On day one when he made a remark about assassins I got a slight vibe but dropped it, I should have looked more to his defensive posturing. Great job there.

My reasoning for investigating Gornall was less that I was suspicious of him, and more that I was looking for a third person that I could know for a fact to be an Imperial that way if the three of us were the last left the traitors would be obvious to us. That said, there were things he did that I found suspicious which were ultimately why the investigation took place, if he were loyal good, if not that's good too.

I really think that dropping the vote on Arnheiner is what hurt me in the end, but I had hoped pointing out the obvious reasoning for why it would be bad for me to do so if I were a genestealer would help me.

Having someone claim to be an Inquisitor was something I expected, especially because of the Arnheiner incident. Two other claims was not something I had expected, though I believe I gave handling it a good attempt, until Mekboy(who in my mind was the second genestealer) voted for Airman. I figured if one other person voted for him Gornall would switch his vote from me to him.

Thor, I was hoping you would have picked up on that earlier. I probably could have worded it better, but I was scrambling to come up with a way to drop a hint and that's all I could come up with. At least you ended up figuring it out.

I wish I'd picked up on it earlier as well. I probably still would have been dead but you might not have had as much stigma going into your Day 3 reveal if I had.

For my first game, which I found to be pretty fun, I think I failed pretty badly. I mistook Thor's experience and knowledge of how the game worked into some sort of typical 'mastermind' genesteleaer. At first it was just a nagging feeling, but after we had that heated argument I was sure of his guilt. I guess I played right into the genestealers hands, chasing after shadows.

Like I said, me not being found out in the first day was basically only luck. I thought that my arguement with Styner would give me away quite quickly. Gornall was a good partner though, his suggestions on what to do at the end of each day were helpful and our plans seemed to work out.

Anyway it will be interesting to see what happens in the next game

So Thor if ever Im the Inquisitor in any of the other games, hopefully many many games from now, I should try and be a less scummy Inquisitor?

Well, truth be told everyone should always be trying to play in a non scummy manner (besides Jester roles) regardless of being town, scum, or Inquisitor.

Basically what initially got me uneasy towards you was your initial method of putting a vote on someone, getting a reply or two out of them, and then unvoting and voting for someone else. It felt more like something scum would do to generate white noise then a legitimate scum hunting exercise.

I challenged it on you a bit as regards the Mekboy vote and you quickly re-voted Mekboy after having just unvoted him. This was really the action that caught my eye because it reads as if you were trying to appease me in some way. Now, truth be told there are some problems I fight with this theory on this board because I am looked upon as an experienced played so that sometimes my suggestions are taking in too strongly - but I felt you had played enough games where that wasn't happening.

That meant you were trying to perhaps avoid too much attention - which sometimes a psyker or Inquisitor will do, but is more often a Genestealer action.

That's the flow of how you initially rose towards the top of my suspect list - I think everything else about you I ended up saying during the game but if you have any other questions feel free to ask them.

How do you think I did when trying to deal with two other Inquisitors

You were doing an okay presentation, and I wish I'd been there to back your play (I blame Gornall and n0t_u)

You were pretty much doomed the instant airman false claimed when he wasn't even being targeted by anyone. Gornall's ploy to play a third Inquisitor was a brilliant move since he knew he had to add extra discredit to you - but really I think airman was dead the instant he told Mekboy that all his investigations had been blocked by a Stynier Magus (because airman had seemed so obvious Inquisitor since night 1).

Mekboy had a good play in smelling the scumminess on airman's claim - but with a lying townie in lylo you guys would have probably still lost even if Gornall had posted back "ha ha, You're right, I'm a Genestealer! Can't stop me, neener-neener-neener!" (because after he was lynched, flipped scum, and n0t_u nightkilled Stynier Mekboy would have been easy to convince that they should lynch airman the Genestealer claiming to be an Inquisitor)

You also declared at the right time, and I suspect had Mekboy at least seriously considering the validity of your statement. If you guys had nailed Gornall I think back tracking to then find n0t_u could have been done by Mekboy and airman on Day 4 for an Imperium win.

Mekboy and Airman... had I counter-claimed before Airman, and said both of you were innocents, how do you think it would have played out?

I wish you'd of been there as well.

I figured airman would have done that, but do to his exchange with Mekboy after his claim I doubted he was a genestealer, particularly with his claim as to a fourth option of scared citizen.

Gornall's ploy was good, but I believe that I handled my response well and that had Mekboy not voted for Airman it could have possibly provided a chance to remove Gornall.

I kinda figured my declare was at a good time, I had seen what happens when the stealers declare first and knew that with the number of people left declaring was all I could do.

I think you did a great declare. I think had Airman not claimed, you'd had a pretty good shot of getting me lynched. I had some things in my favor, though, namely your rushed lynch on Arnheiner and some of your arguments from earlier. The "assassin" code was what really had me worried, though. I tried to discredit it, as it was pretty solid proof IMO of your role if believed. (That was pretty dang brilliant on your part)

I'm suprised that Airman didn't vote for me, TBH, after my claim. Did you believe me or Stynier more?

I have to comment that I think games are better with 11 people, as that extra day of talking can make a big difference.

Also, Thor, I'm curious as to your thoughts on the best way to use the assassin role.

Pretty much the same way as we used the Genestealler roles. You have to pick out targets, but it's a fair bit harder because you don't know all the targets already. Simply don't draw any attention and pay attention to everything to try and pick up on the Genesteallers. I guess you could think up two people you want to lynch in the same day phase and night kill the one that doesn't get lynched. The Assassin was my first role.

To my mind the optimal Assassin player is someone who understands that you don't always want to kill someone.

For instance, Day 1 I didn't kill anyone simply because there wasn't enough evidence. That would have left me with a 2/7 chance to hit Genestealer which meant statistically I was going to hit Imperium. If I'd been able to rule out a player or two during the course of the day I might have taken a stab at night. But Night 1 Assassin kills are not optimal in my opinion.

Day 2 it was all about how confident I felt in my pick and whether or not we lynched scum. If we had lynched scum I would have stabbed my top suspect with no questions asked because my being wrong wouldn't have negatively impacted us and would have increased our chances on Day 3 of hitting scum especially if I roleclaimed since scum couldn't afford to counter role claim (this is an optimal situation for an assassin).

However, since we missed scum I had to consider that if I killed an innocent (4/5 chance) it was an auto-win for the Genestealers unless they had targeted the same innocent.

To my mind the Assassin role is about patience, picking the right moment to strike, and being very mindful of who he kills.
