Well, Nid p0laying friend of mine did a calculation, based off of actually getting a decent number of gaunts out of a Tervigon, he would need about 60gaunts per Tervigon let alone normal gaunt broods already on the table. Biggest issue is how to mark 'em so they remain flexible.

I'm only going on 30 per tervigon (including the ten to make it troops). If I need more at a later date then I'll add to them, but currently as I'm only building 500pt increments it should suffice (I hope).

the unit marking issue, is something I've yet to figure out unfortunately :(

Well after trying a link Vik sent me, here's the rough look for how my colour scheme is in my head... ish... just imagine it more swampy-like and venomous.

well that is a good start... and you could alter it ever so slightly with one of the carpace purple streaks done in a different color...

Well, since you suggested we leave comments so politely, I like the purple one more. But if you are going for swampy, maybe have some brown streaks or veins running across the carapce? I like it though.

i like the thrid sugeston ...also i like the second as a statement for the toxic nids you wanted... but for the swampy look jake has sure hit the nail on the proverbial head^^

some brown drybrush accents on the carpace sure would add lots of depth and would also look more massive...

I'll be using my FW weathering paints for mud on the body and legs for the muddy look. as the bases will be Secret Miniatures blasted wetlands ones. so will have wet effect on them too. ^_^

also i think you should look into gloss varnish for some parts...remember that yucky look of them aliens aliens? teeth and so on could be done in that fashion...also those brainlike looking things some nids have could be done that way...

Lols you mean Zoanthropes... yeah the brains on them are going to be fleshy opaquey lols.

Yeah I'll most likely get some varnish too as well as some inks. as I want an oily/venomy look on them.

Also, what do you think, if I made the purple on the third scheme, more fleshy?

I like the green and yellow scheme as it has a more natural feel to it ( don't ask me why though ) although I do like the green and purple but have seen it way to many times before.

Have you got a splat of paint that you are thinking of using, just so we can see the 2 colours together in a more realistic tone

You are undecided because you are all over the color wheel, and that is why none of them look right to you.
Green and purple are perfect contrasting colors, unnatural, but plausibly alien one could argue.
But your Green and yellow are complement colors
Since you spammed our threads for advice ...
I'll spam you a reply I gave someone else today asking about what colors to paint his buildings on a Brown table:

Ignore anything ever written in any of GW's publications regarding color theory, they make it much more complicated than it needs to be, it just confuses me.
If your board is an earthy, leather brown, find it on the color wheel

I am assuming you'll find it around 12:00 or 1:00, and you'll see it's either under yellow, or orange. (your mileage may very- I'm assuming it is similar to GW Cobra Leather)

Basically, if you add enough white, your brown will end up more yellow (outside of the wheel, or tint),
if you add black (or complement colors- more on those in a minute), it will end up darker (center of the wheel or shade)

So, if your brown is at 12:00 on the wheel....
anything OPPOSITE of it is a perfect CONTRAST color
anything NEXT to it is a COMPLEMENT color

so...how does this answer your question?

black and white are neutral colors, grey is only a mix of them both, so ignore those for the purpose of this discussion.

If the board is brown, anything from teal (11:00) to magenta (3:00) clockwise is a COMPLEMENT color, that means they will blend in together very well.

Anything in the southern half of the wheel is a CONTRAST color, that means it will, well...contrast.

Those are the rules of color that you have no power over, but you are free to work anywhere within those rules.
Although, generally speaking, without contrasting colors in your models (even spot colors) it won't look right to the viewer.

The GW 'Eavy Metal team live and breathe by their triangle spot color rule, that is why their miniatures are always so striking- You can always draw an imaginary triangle from contrast spot colors on their miniatures.

Then, if I'm following you correctly, the third option I presented seem's the best. Yellow compliments the Green, whilst the Purple/pink contrasts the green.

The whole theme is based on naturally camouflaged, but poisonous creatures. I want fleshy tones for joints, but on the carapace I want something bold and bright to mimic the principals of poisonous creatures.

Nature makes things that are poisonous colored RED, red is the color of danger in nature, but purple is just as exotic IMHO

Oh and Dave, I did an intensive colour theory course as part of my degree when I was at uni

So here's a slight re-tweek of the proposed colour scheme. as the mixed scheme has more votes for it than against it (I've asked friends irl too lols)

Just remember there will be more tonal depth than the online painter program allows me to do.

Yeah, I know, depth will make a difference, but as far as blocking in the basic color scheme, since yellow is your chitin color, I'd add something bright and poison-ey as a spot color. And remember, if you have to paint a huge mob, keep it simple, or you'll never finish
