Hi Dakka !

I love grots and i love them in masses!

however... i have never taken any before nor have i ever seen anyone field them since i started warhammer.

Can anyone tell me how effective grot units are?

Grot / gretchin squad
Grot tank ( war track / buggies )
Grot heavy artillery.

Thanks!

Most people say artillery sucks, cant say anything about tanks, and normal grot squads can take objectives/screen.

Well, Grots includes Killa Kanz and nobody doubts the effectiveness of the Kan wall. Grots can be a lot of fun and still a fairly effective army. They love the KFF and since grots are plastic nowadays converting up two Grot-centric KFFs is both much easier than before and would make a characterful addition to the army.

It's tough to get rid of 30 grots with a 4+ cover and with a couple runtherds taking attacks away from people, it makes it a massive tarpit against assaults for not many points invested from you.

Warbuggies aren't bad by any means, but the extra mobility of Deffkoptas is hard to pass up.

Edit: Just saw the Forgeworld Grot Tanks. Wow those are awesome!

My brother actuly uses two large squads of them, they are a pain in the ass. Its easy to ignor them because, well they die with little to no effort. But they are constantly annoying me, its easy to put off kill them and before you know it they are next to you. They constantly tie up my units, sometimes block my field of views etc. I say for the little point they are great, also they have captures points before.

2200+ points guard
WIP 3000+ point praetorian renegade army.
500+ points tyranid all OOP and wip

I find the best use for grots on the ground are to hold and objective. All to many times I send my boys off to have the fun of killing and leave my objective empty. 40 points for a grot squad that comes in from reserves and goes to ground if anyone so much as sneezes a them is a great investment to hold and objective.

When I use heavy support I use my Kans and I can't speak highly enough about them. Kans are simply awesome for what they do and their points cost. I have never used grot artillery but on paper they don't seem that they would be worth it.

Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

Kans are great, big guns (kannons) aren't bad in gunline armies, and grots themselves are best as cheap objective grabbers coming out of reserves or as a bubblewrap for something like lootas. If you want to actually do any fighting with grots, you will see them soundly beaten unless you're good at getting runtherds and grabbin' sticks in base with one enemy to limit their attacks. Overall, I rarely use grots, but some swear by them. Depends on your playstyle. If I want a cheap scoring unit, 10 shoota boyz are only 60 points also...

I tried some big gunz with the SAG big mek. I found they weren't really effective. I mostly play against eldar and tau though and trying to out shoot them isn't the best idea. I found that for the points they just didn't kill as much as boyz or even kanz or a deff dread would.

What do you think is the idea size per unit?

And do they hide near Mek with KFF?

If you're going for Big Guns, then go for Lobbas. Their Barrage (G) ability is wonderful; so few people expect Orks to have indirect blast weaponry. Plus they can hide behind buildings and hills and have a 48" range.

I take a pretty small unit of grots, 12-15 or so seems to be enough in my experience.

Like Vrak (and others have said) gtg on an objective and camp it. People hate burning long range fire on units that get a 3+ save, especially, when the rest of the army is about to catch them on the chin....

cheers

Grots are amazing home objective holder. 3+ cover save (go2g)? yes please. not to mention they can pad your SAG mek, as well as screen your boys.

Big gunz are not an effective HS choice, go with kanz (they are grots!)

also, the gretchin plastic models look tight! (i just picked up 2 boxes)

They are great in objective based games.
Keep them in reserve and let them move onto an objective in your home zone.

Mad Dok Grotsnik allows any model in the Ork Army to be upgraded with Cybork for 5pts. In the GQ FAQ, they mention that you could even upgrade Grots - which they refer to as Super-Gretchin - but also note that they are a tad expensive at 8pts each

Its not an actual unit type or anything - just a cool name they came up with for expensive and harder to kill Grots

For a few measly points you get:
a) A unit that can tie up and bog down enemy heavy hitters - who wants their PK warboss smashing grots for 2 turns
b) a screen for fragile units - Loota bubble rap
c) a huge wound point shield - Big mek with SAG and 19 grots
d) a units that can hold on to an objective with 3+ cover or conga line and hold 2 objectives

How can you not want such a multitasking tool and 3 points per model?
