Hey everyone, so I got this piece finished about a week ago for WingsofCadia, and let me tell you, it was a blast! He wanted the piece done up for his Urban based Guard, and wanted long red hair sculpted onto the model. So, without further ado....

and the final product...

As always, Comments and Criticisms are always welcome, and allow me to make my next pieces even better!
As a reminder, I'm always up for conversions, from simple paintjobs to large conversions, so feel free to PM me if interested!
Thanks,
Granesh

K here goes :x

The first thing that came to mind when i saw the mini was , the lack of contrast and definition.

The painting skills and such are all good , but the color itself , is just very dull.

The shadow in the cape looks rushed as if its made via pool of wash ,
the thigh and leg armor could use the same darker shadow i think im seeing around the elbow area and shoulder area.

The tones are just all too similar with no "pop"

@LunaHound: Thanks for the comments Ms. I'm too scared to post
I do agree, the thigh armour didn't come out to the same standard as the rest of the piece. The photo is also a little bright (I was playing with a photo fixing program).
As for the cape, it's much more of an extreme highlight, and the darkness of the picture makes the cape look like Blood Red with a Badab Wash. I had thought about doing a giant freehand rose on her cape, but just didn't have the time. The only washes on the piece are the gold armour, and I probably could have hit most of that gold again with Badab Black to add more shadows.
Come on guys, lets get some more critiques and comments!

What was your customer's level of satisfaction with this piece? Was it adequate to his needs, or just what he always wanted?

I like the paint job, it's good. It's just that there isn't anything about it (from the front, anyhow) to make it stand out or seem all that unique. (To me.) Don't get me wrong, it's very good.

However, from the back, I love the look of the cloak the cherubs are holding. It has a very rich color to it, and it isn't done with a bunch of crazy highlights. I think most folks would have tried to do too much with it. I like seeing things simplified, rather than overly complicated.

Overall, a very good piece! You certainly earned your commission.

I think it looks excellent! However, the two pics have very different lighting- the one from the front is really bright, and the one from the back is rather dark. Any chance of getting a closeup of the hair?

Edit: Also, I've noticed the weekends tend to be pretty quiet around Dakka in general. So the lack of responses is probably just due to that, and more people will discover it tomorrow

I'm not seeing any definition in this paintjob.

You've just painted the armour gold, painted the robes red, painted the tubing black, etc... Even the sword just looks to have been given a simple undercoat of purple/pink.

What I'm trying to get at is that none of the details have been picked out. Granted i don't know how much you were paid for this, or how much time you have spent painting it, but this is one of the few GW models that really deserves every effort the painter can throw at it.

My standard commission rate for a standard unit and a nicely done individual model is $20, I do commissions because I like to work on things that I've never painted before. My goal as a commissioned painter is to provide good looking models for a decent rate.
I can't get any more close-up pictures because I already shipped the figure out. As for the very plain Jane nature of the figure is that the commissioner wanted the model done up to the same scheme as GW's basic paintjob. I had thought about doing some freehand on the cloak, and more intricate bordering on the white skirt. The Gold armour was practice using Gryphonne Sepia on a Chainmail base instead of using Shining and Burnished Gold. I'm still in agreement with LunaHound, the upper thighs could have used a little more definition. The sword was done using a Chainmail base, coated a couple of times with Baal Red....now that I think about it, I used more washes on this figure then I usually like to use...
I do have some more pictures in my gallery, they may convey the piece a little bit better.
Thanks guys, I wish I had the model back, I could do some more work on it. I'll have pictures up of my latest pieces, a second Veteran Squad for my BOLScon team army, up within a few days.

Edit: I just checked out your St. Celestine J.Black, I really like the contrast of the pink and the terquoise. Your NMM is also very good, I wish I had seen yours before I started mine.

Dont worry Granesh that is easily worth $20 if not $30.

J. Black's Saint and mine had hours of work put into it and therefore ours would get a bigger price.

You could do a nice NMM Saint and sell it for at least $150 in the future.

Goodluck!

@Zarkin: Thanks, I still need to work on some NMM. Mine also had a lot of time put into it, not as much as a NMM piece, but more work than the pictures show. It was also my first time sculpting hair, and I believe I rocked it.
@InventionThirteen: Thank you, that was the commissioner's idea, and I thought it really helped the model out and added more heroic movement to the piece.

If your're looking to improve your NMM skillz, go out and buy a Sanguinor and the WD Blood Angels issue. It's how I learnt and I've been painting NMM ever since.

Just got to take a deep breath and go for it.

This is nice stuff. Question, though. Do you have a website? I like to browse the price lists and past work of commission paintes/converters, but I didn't see a website link on your profile.

@31rls31: *wipes grease off hand* Thanks man, most of my pictures seem to lose their details in the pictures....
@Zarkin: I have that issue, that NMM tutorial is amazing! I did use the Tutorial on the Sword on my Dire Avengers I did a while ago. I've thought about picking up the Sanguinator, I'm sure I will at some point....
@NightWatch: I thought it added a different touch to the Cherubs
@Jimsolo: I'm going to be putting a blog together here soon, I'll send you a pm with my usual prices and past commission works.
Thanks for the comments everyone! I think NMM is going to be a project I do here in a little bit, sounds like it'll be fun.

Lol I never expect my posts to get comments almost a month after the last one...
@HadoukenAvenger: The whole point of putting your pictures up on here is to show off your work and get some feedback and criticisms back. I look back at the piece now and agree with LunaHound's advice; some of the metallics didn't pop how they were supposed to. Luna and I both have different painting styles as well, and through criticisms, (I hope) we both learn something new regarding our painting techniques.
