Hi all I also attended the Partick Crucible in Glasgow on Saturday.

This was a local tourney hosted by Troy Tempest from Dakka. Thanks for this again. A great day.

The format was simple. 12 attendees with 1000pt army's. Four games each during the day. 3pts for a win, 1 for a draw + victory points.

There was also a good spread of armies from 40k:

Nids, Eldar Necron, Da Ork Angels (also on Dakka), Generic chaos space marines, Plague marines, Tau, Salamanders space marines, Orks, space marines, Blood Angels, and Guard.

My Army was the Eldar force that was all ground pounding:

Farseer - Doom and fortune
Avatar
8 Scorpians with outflank and power claw
2 Units of guardians with EML and conceal on the Warlock
8 Dire Avengers with Defend and 2 shuricats on the exarch
3 war walkers all with 2 shuricans

Game 1 Versus Jamie's Plague marines

I didn't rate my chances in this one as I've heard all sorts of bad things about Jamie's plague marines and how tough they are.

Jamie is a nice guy - the first time meeting and playing against him. I like his approach to fluff armies and he turned out to be a good opponent.

Plague marines
Demon Prince with warptime
2 Oblits (in one unit)
vindicator with demonic possession
2 units of 7 plague marines each with their own rhino.

We rolled for mission and got random amount of objectives (we had 3 objectives in total) and pitched battle - 3 of my four games were to be pitched battle. There was a fair amount of terrain on the table and when placing the objectives I placed 2 as close together on the right that I could while the other ended up at the opposite side of the table.

The key to this game was to hold the two objectives on the right.
I kept all of my army covering the 2 objectives on the right and kept the scorps and WW in reserve.
Jamie had most of his army opposite mines however one squad of plague marines were left covering the 3rd objective. Miles from the fight.

Highlights
The fortuned Avatar and Demon Prince with Warptime went toe to toe for the first 3 - 4 combat phases. The Avatar lost a wound but demolished the Prince.
The other plague marines careened into my lines in their rhino with vindicator support and I promptly lost a squad of guardians.
My Dire Avengers managed to take care of the Oblits as they advanced with two rounds of shuricat fire.
The WW and scorps came on turn 3. Both at different sides of the table. The WW destroyed the vindicator and the scorps advanced on the single objective on the other side.
The plague marines on the single objective moved up and unloaded on my scorps who lost a few and then failed their morale check and when they tried to bolt found their way blocked with the rhino. Wiped out - ouch!! This left The single objective firmly in Jamies hands.
The Avatar finished the demon prince in enough time to get back accross to deal with the plague marines who had destroyed the guardians.
I can't remember how but by this stage I'd lost both guardian squads leaving me with only the Dire Avengers as scoring.
I realised that as long as I kept them safe and spread them out to cover both objectives, Id won.
Jamie bravely left his own objective as he realised this as well and came for mines.
The Avatar stopped the rhino and then killed the remaining plague marines inside.

Result - Victory to me and 6 - 2 KP. Both Jamie and I agreed the result made it look easier to me than it was.

Jamie then made me roll on the table to see what I had contracted because I was fighting Nurgle and I'd caught Nurgles rot.

A good game against a good, fun, sporting opponent for my first game.

More to come!!

Round 2 Vrs Necron

I was playing against Chris with his Necrons.

Chris was someone else I was meeting that day for the first time. Nice bloke.

I haven't played against 'Crons for a while so this would be interesting.

We rolled for Annihilation and pitch battle.

Necron
Lord with staff of light and res orb
2 units of ten warriors
1 squad of 4 destroyers
1 heavy destroyer
Monolith

This game started with all forces to the left.
I was leaving the scorps and war walkers in reserve again as I like the options this gives me.
The Necrons were advancing from their corner behind the cover of the monlith with the destroyers closest to the centre of the table.

Highlights
My Avatar took a few wounds on the way in as I left him out of fortune range from the farseer - A lesson I learned that day.
He then got stuck into a warrior unit, killing 4 before they struck back. A single necron took his last wound and he died!
This upset my plans slightly as the unit he was attacking I though would've run and been caught.
Also my scorpians came on within charge range of his other warrior squad further back. I managed to kill 3 I think and they didn't run.
My war walkers came on the wrong flank and even although they moved 6" they were just out of range to blast his heavy D.
The next turn they were wiped out by the heavy and normal destroyers without them firing a shot.
The guardians chasing the Avatar and Dire Avengers got charged by the squad that had killed the Avatar and nearly wiped out.
Game ended in turn 5 with Chris 5 or so Necrons away from phase. 1 more turn would have changed this game from a defeat to a victory.
As it was it was 2 KP to 1 (if you read this Chris I remembered later that the gaurdian squad still had their warlock alive at the end).

This was a challenging game and Chris was doing well with his WBB's to keep him from phasing. The Avatar getting killed lost me the game I think.

Still not to grumble as I learned a valuable lesson in this game - The Avatar dies without fortune.

One victory and one defeat, now on to game 3.

Were the Scorpions completely surrounded by difficult terrain/Marines/Rhino? I only ask as you have to retreat by the shortest possible path to you table edge - not necessarily directly. It can actually be quite difficult to set up Trapped as per p45 BRB. You only need a 3" gap...

Looking forward to the rest. It will be interesting to see how our reports of Game 4 compare

I was under the impression that if their corridor of retreat was blocked then they are destroyed. I'll check this out Arakasi. Thanks.

Game 4 was a close run thing. When I get round to writing it up feel free to correct me if my memory leaves any of the juicy details out.

I'll look forward to your reports as well.

Are you doing all four?

Nice write up and I can confirm that it was a fun game for me too in the first battle! The confrontation between the DP and Avatar was epic, those rerollable inv saves really made the difference.

I'm kinda glad that the DAs were able to cover the two objs - had they not we'd both have been forced to effectively play a defensive game in order to avoid losing, it was much more fun to send my troops hurtling across the board to their certain death!

Good guys go to heaven.

Bad guys send them there.

The difference between having fortune and doom and not. lol

If I was sitting in your position I would probably have done the same as nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Thanks again for the game

Round 3

We had all reassembled back after taking an hour for lunch.

My next opponent was Andy with his large threatening looking Imperial Guard force:

Commissar and Command Squad (5)
Psyker Lord
Ratling Snipers (5)
Heavy Weapons Team (3) with 2 Autocannons, 1 Heavy Bolter.
Guard Squad (10) with Missile Launcher
Guard Squad (10) with Heavy Bolter (Psyker Lord here)
Guard Squad (10) in Chimera with Heavy Bolter and Autocannon
Guard Squad (10)
Leman Russ with Battlecannon and Heavy Bolter sponsons
Hellhound

We rolled for mission and it was random number of objectives again (this time 3). Deployment came up pitched battle again.

This table had two large pieces of scenery in central locations.

The way both armies started out was hiding behind different buildings in opposite corners.

One thing that we didn't do pre game was agree how the scenery should be treated - bad move which I think helped me in this game. Lesson learned for the future.

Highlights

The way we both set up indicated we would have played the buildings differently.
Andy set up his guard looking to gain entrance to the buildings via the doors/windows I had set up the way I would normally play buildings which is unless they are really high (these were 3 - 4 ") then you can get over them. Andy had infiltrated his ratlings in my building.
I moved into the building in front of me. This is when we realised the differences in our expectations for terrain. Andy kindly suggested we make a difficult terrain test for getting over the walls. I promptly rolled a 6. Pretty much most of my army advanced into the building except for the two guardian squads which I left at either corner of the building engaging 2 guardsmen squads and the other engaging a Leman Russ and the Hellhound. As I advanced the DA's swept the ratlings aside. The hellhound and Leman Russ both took some casualties from the guardian squad engaging them before managing to shake the advancing hellhound. The other guardians were having a duel with a missile launcher squad and heavy bolter squad. The plasma missile showed why I love taking the EML here and pretty much ripped up most of the squads with the avatar piling in to wipe out the rest.
The Avatar now advanced behind the building to take on the Hellhound that was hiding there - which it killed with his wailing doom. This left him in the open.
The next turn what was left of Andy's army opened up on the Avatar and he lost all his wounds again - once again he wasn't fortuned.
The guardian squad advanced to the corner where he went down and remained there until the end of the game taking crack missile pot shots at his Leman Russ and Chimera with the psycher lord and squad in it. My warlocks also carry singing spears to help with this task within 12".
I was now safely in charge of two Objectives in this building and at the corner of it.
Andy brought his Chimera accross to try and get rid of one or more of my scoring units.

Meanwhile at the other building my war walkers had appeared and proceeded to wipe out his heavy weapons squad and followed this up by taking care of another squad in the building with a mixture of shooting and CC. They did lose two of their number during this, one to heavy weapons fire and the other to a dangerous terrain test.
The remaining one then came out the back of the building lining up on his command squad. This became a dead command squad after it and the dire avengers opened up on it.

This left Andy with a full chimera and a Leman Russ which had lost it's main gun due to the singing spear on the farseer.
The chimera was stopped by a crack missile and it's troops butchered between the DA and the scorps who had now arrived. The Leman Russ was trying desperately to escape from the now advancing farseer who was doing everything to it bar kill it.

The game finished about this time. Another victory for me!

Lessons learned - Agree scenery before starting as this sort of took the shine of this victory as we had both set up for different games here. Andy was sporting with his compromise however I am under no illusions that I would not have won so easily in the end if we had played the buildings the way he had thought.
Once again I marvel at the humble guardian squad - most people over look them but for their points it's hard to get a unit that most people overlook but can threaten most targets on the table.
The Avatar dies without fortune - I did learn this hard lesson again in this game.

Andy was a very sporting opponent and his guard were painted very nicely.

Next up - Arakasi's Truck borne Orks "Da Ork Angels" in the final game.

Round 4

Arakasi's Orks.

There are two pics as Adrian had already started setting up when I remembered to take pics.

[HQ] Morgrim "Da Lion" Grimork (Da Warboss): Mega Armour (Power Klaw, Twin Linked Shoota, Stikkbombs), Cybork Body
[HQ] Skarag Mekslag (Da Big Mek): Burna, Kustom Force Field, Mek's Tools
[TR] Grimskab Badwort (Da Painboy): 'Urty Syringe, Dok's Tools, Cybork Body, 'Eavy Armour and Da Inna Circul (5 Nobz): 2 Power Klaws, Big Choppa, 2 Choppas, 4 Sluggas, Twin Linked Shoota, 4 'Eavy Armour, Bosspole, Cybork Bodies in a Trukk: Big Shoota, Boarding Plank, Red Paint Job, Reinforced Ram
[TR] Da Warboss' Taktikal Boyz - 10 Shootas including Big Shoota and Nob: Power Klaw, Slugga, Bosspole in a Trukk: Big Shoota, Boarding Plank, Red Paint Job, Reinforced Ram
[TR] Skarag's Taktikal Boyz - 11 Shootas including Rokkit Launcha and Nob: Power Klaw, Slugga, Bosspole in a Trukk: Big Shoota, Boarding Plank, Red Paint Job, Reinforced Ram
[FA] Rav'nwing I - Deffkopta with Twin Linked Rocket Launchas and Buzzsaw
[FA] Rav'nwing II - Deffkopta with Twin Linked Rocket Launchas and Buzzsaw

Random objectives again (5 this time) however this time we rolled for quarters (yay)

The table was a mass of craters and I was thinking that with Adrians list having 3 trucks and 2 deffkopta that there would be some immobilizations going on - how wrong can you get.

I won the roll off and picked to go first and deployed in the quarter that had the lions share of the objectives.

Looking back on things I was lucky in this game as my deployment was a bad one and played right in to my opponents hands.

I positioned my Avatar and scorps as my front line with the Dire avengers and two guardian squads behind them in cover the war walker were also deployed leaving me nothing in reserve.

I should've pulled my lines back giving me an extra turn of shooting at the trucks and I could them have advanced later in the game to get to the objectives.

Highlights

The Avatar and Scorpians advanced in turn one with the avatar receiving fortune everyone that had the range fired at the ork trucks. The result was no damage KF stopping the damage on more than one occasion here.
The scorps were assaulted by the painboy and his nobs while the avatar was assaulted by the boys mob. The third truck went flat out towards my squishy guardian flank.
The koptas went straight for the WW. Combats were bloody with the scorps taking a beating from the nobs but the avatar performing better with the nobs.
The WW shot up the third truck and dumped its passengers in the road. They were subsequently shot up by the koptas and then assaulted by them as well. This killed off the WW. The passengers that had been dumped in the road were now shot at by both guardian squads and the dire avangers. This finished off the squad but left the war boss in mega armour standing. Who was subsequently killed by the Avatar.
The scorps got wiped out by the pain boy and nobs however by this time the Avatar had finished with the boys mob and then piled in to the scorps killers.
The war boss was killed but the big mek had came forward and wasted a guardian squad himself. He was then killed by a crack missile from the other guardian squad.
The Avatar ran down the pain boy and nobs after defeating them in CC. The difference in this game was keeping the fortune on him as this soaked up quite a few power claw hits. The Defkoptas were becoming a real pain as they had now fired into the last guardians and dire Avengers as well. They were whittling these squads down due to combat resolution and my guys taking extra saves due to being fearless.
The Avatar finished off the last two trucks (which had never failed a dangerous terrain test all game even although two of them were still moving by turn 4) and then headed for one of the defkoptas.
By this stage it was the defkoptas against my two rapidly reducing troops. I can't remember who did it but one of his koptas got killed.
We were rapidly running out of time and were the last game playing by this stage. We were asked to finish up however with the game still in the balance and so few units on the table I knew another turn would take minutes to play.
Adrian graciously played on.
His defkopta jumped out of the assault and he finally failed a dangerous terrain test and crashed leaving me with only my Dire Avengers as scoring on one objective.

A very close game that could have went to a draw right up until the final turn.

Adrian is a good opponent who is now itching for revenge as this is the second time we've played and I won the last outing too.

I couldn't believe that with everything flying and driving about the place he didn't fail a single dangerous terrain test right up until the final dice roll of the game.

The Avatar was a monster in this game for me pretty much mopping up most of the opposing army. Fortune being the difference.

The results for the competition were now in and I had came a very respectable 2nd. While my last opponent had came in 4th. Chris, my necron opponent had came in third.

For those interested the Nids came in top.

All in all a great day out with some very worthy opponents.

Cheers

It was an excellent game, and Da Dark Angelz will be looking forward to game 3. I can see even after just two games I am going to have to have my wits about me (and a bit of luck) to put those Eldar in their place.

Its funny that the only difficult terrain test test I failed (Deffkopta) was also one I couldn't re-roll with Reinforced Rams (why I was less worried about the Trukks...)

I think the Avatar was safe this game (this time...) without fortune. I only remember inflicting two wounds on him - the first he failed (even with Fortune) from shooting, the second he passed (needed Fortune) from H2H. None were Power Klaw attacks - as I either missed (Nob in first boyz mob) or failed to wound (2 hits from the Nobz) - I don't recall you ever having to make a 4+ invulnerable save Needing 5+ to hit undid me - this time...

My most enjoyable game of the 4 and a great way to end the day - even if I ended up losing (again)

An excellent way to finish indeed.

Apologies if the details are a little blurred as I put this report together solely from memory.

I too am looking forward to the rematch but not facing your painboy and nobs again. They are a complete pain - pun intended.

Come to think of it I don't like your defkoptas either.

lol
