Which wash colour is best for large areas of gold (Citadel Shining Gold)?

I was thinking Gryphonne Sepia, but advice would be appreciated. I'm looking for a fairly subtle final result, modest shading without dulling most of the gold...

Erm, that's it.

I use either a brown or black wash, or somewhere inbetween. Not sure what the GW equivalents would be since I just mix my own.

Chestnut ink or sepia. I think Devlan Mud is a bit too dark.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

why not give devlan mud a shot? I find it a good wash for most anything gold, or that is to look slightly worn.

Really, gold doesn't look too bad with any kind of wash, so long as you actually wash it. Straight gold paints, no matter the quality, tend to look really fake and plastic like without a wash. Otherwise, you can pretty much throw out any wash and get some form of improvement. Of course, browns and blacks are naturally going to get the best results for this, but I'm sure colours like red and green would still be useful.

Someone on dakkadakka made gold with Mithril silver and
3-4 layers of gryphonne sepia. Try it, it looks awesome

Too much like hard work - though I know that that sort of thing can look top-notch. A mate of mine acheived a sensational metalic blue using Mithril Silver and blue ink. He said it took over two-dozen coats of ink...

I like using Ogryn Flesh, gives nice ruddy feeling to the gold, and if you go back and highlight it looks even better.

I'll have to experiment with this. Anybody have any handles? I know of a PH TS Technique which achieves the Metallic Red with Mithril and Baal Red, as well as a few other things. But Gold from Silver and Sepia? I'll give it a try. Just got to get the Sepia!

I like using badab black because when it dries it really bring out the detail and gives the gold a dirty look, then again I do play Chaos so it depends on the look you're trying to give them

The boltgun metal/mithril silver and Gryphonne Sepia is an absolutely gorgeous gold. It's in the tutorial forum, IIRC.

First basecoat the surface black.
Then go and paint on Burnished Gold (not shining gold, burnished gold. thats what happens when you buy burnished instead of shining by accident. you learn cool things.)
After that dries, coat HEAVILY in devlan mud.
It looks really cool.

I swear by the Boltgun Metal +Gryphonne Sepia method. Adds highlights and shadows as you layer too!

For shading gold, I would definitely use a brown ink (I prefer the P3 brown ink, but I do use others).

However, to add layers of realism, I often do some glazing by thinning down a blue paint and applying that over the gold area (ultramarine blue is a good one to use). An extremely thin coat of this will help keep the mini strong and centered, a heavier coat will make the metals look very old and worn.

Old and worn isn't fitting - I want the sense of meticulously cared for, polished gold. Hence, subtle shading which allows most of the gold to shine (with suitable highlighting).

I think I'll try Sepia.

I start with tin bitz, then paint shining gold, 50/50 shining gold and mithril silver, then straight mithril silver. Then give a wash of 50/50 yellow ink and gryphonne sepia.

Ends up with a richer, more yellowy gold, and you can get a lot of depth to it.

Could work nicely if you like the cared-for, polished gold look.

That Gold effect is even better looking than I expected. How many layers of Sepia is that, then?

3 thick coats, a highlight and then another coat. I did use a little ogryn flesh to shade around the rivets though.
