Just wondering, in your opinion, what model has the most unnecessary details? Stuff that will never get painted or seen in it's life? On another note, what have you painted and then realized you wouldn't be able to see?

I'm not sure about the parts being unseen, but I think Vulkan has the most overladen model, with too much ugly bling for his own good.
Edit: Well, might as well contribute with a model I like - Gunnery Sergeant Harker. He has a really well sculpted 6-pack, belt buckle, and bandana hanging on his belt. However, his heavy bolter is so honkin' huge that it covers almost his entire body!

I'm painting up Chaos Knights at the moment, and the Warhorses have quite detailed saddles, not just the normal blank seat part.
Why? It get's covered in a giant Knight bum. Infact, nearly half the model ends up covered by Knight bum and legs, but they are still mega detailed
My obsessiveness forced me to paint them entirely even though I knew it would be covered up regardless haha.
Edit: Quite coincidental that the post above got in just before me.

I'm talking about the chains on the front and back that aren't covered by anything! It's nice and chainmail up until a point then it's just a big glob of plastic. They could have continued the pattern just further and I wouldn't have cared. Edit: The fact that I'm modeling several of them as centaurs makes me like the detailed saddle as pointed out, though!

How about the floor grating inside the LRBT? No one will see that unless they take the turret off and look down through the ring!

It could be sampling bias, but I rarely see examples of painted interiors on Rhinos, Razorbacks, or Land Raiders. Most people (myself included) seem to just glue the hatches closed, so the benches, grooved floor, control panels, etc. all remain unseen. After building my first Rhino and realizing that I was never going to paint that interior, I started gluing all of my hatches and doors shut and saving the interior bulkhead pieces terrain/basing/scratchbuilding. Not familiar enough with IG vehicle models to know if they have a similar situation.

All of my Land Raiders and current style Rhinos(that are Transports and not Predators, Whirldwinds, or Vindicators) have painted interiors. My Devilfish don't have painted interiors(put they're not yet painted as is) Chimeras don't have detailed interiors unless you buy the FW upgrade.

I tend to 'shake my head' when i see people posting their GD quality vehicles and showing the bottom of them all painted up super well. I tend to paint these parts really dark and quick. I guess if you play with them and turn them upside down when they get 'killed' its ok?

The new venerable dreadnought has a very well detailed chest piece that ends up being covered by the dreads front plating. What a waste but I think it may be for conversion and diorama purposes.

You may shake your head, but that's exactly the kind of thing the judges look at. When you're dealing with the top levels of any competition, otherwise needless attention to detail is the order of the day.

The opposite stance:
The new Ork Stormboyz are awesome- I love the models (even if the unit is kinda gak on the tabletop). Very detailed and all of it fun/functional/visible.
Some of the landspeeder's rear assembly, near the engine. I guess you could leave those little hatches open, but I always thought that was severely strange- why would you be zipping around in your speeder with a little door flapping in the breeze...
