Just picked up a few Tyranid pre-built models, and when I spread out the 30ish hormagaunts I had, about 7 were in dramatic poses, savaging attacking the counter top with their faces. So in short the little buggers are weighed too heavily up front and they have slotted bases, so the nickel/washer in the base trick ain't gonna werk. What else could be used (maybe liquidy) that could weigh down a light plastic model and keep it from tipping (and not switch bases).

You could try the little metal "sprues" that come with a lot of blister packs to hold things like tentacles and arms. Maybe one on each side of the slot.
Or if you've got the right tools you could try cutting a coin/washer to fit the available space.

If you could get hold of some lead from somewhere you could just cut a bit with some scissors and fit it round the slot. Same effect as the washer.

There's a company that makes Lead Slotta Base Weights, but for the life of me, I can't remember the name, nor find it on eBay. If you can't either, I'd say - if you've got the Tools - that halfing a Coin's your best bet.

I use a pair of tin snips from the hardware store, and cut pennies to fit. After the initial 8 bucks or so for the snips, each base costs just $0.01!
Or, one guy locally fills the undersides of his bases with superglue and shotgun pellets.. another idea I would recommend..

For extremely top heavy minis I use....
Air Gun Pellets. Theyre lead, so heavy. I use a pair of pliers to crush them, and then stack about 3 together and crush em again. I end up with about 20 pellets under a base.

It might be easier to find fishing weights. I had the exact same problem with hormagaunts and just crushed a bunch of fishing weights and glued them in place under the base.

All sound like good ideas! Will try the tin snipper approach first.

With the guants I have found that crushed fishing weights are the best bet. However if you get some small ones just using them and hot glue gun works really well, just watch the nozle and the plastic base, it could get messy.

I used 1'' metal washers from Home Depot. They just glue onto the bottom on the bases and don't detract too much from the model.
Easy to do as well. Go buy them, and glue them on. Done.

I'm gonna plonk my vote in the fishing weights box!
Cheap, very readily avaliable, try to get the 'split-shot' kind so you can simply bend them in half (like opening a book kind of thing) and have 2 flat areas to superglue into base.
Seriously, I swear by them, and as my grandad is a keen angler, I have an unlimited (more or less) supply of them when he buys a new set (sometimes they get a little brittle/clamped tight, not that that bothers me too much)

Ive found lead to be the best as it is extremely heavy while being compact. I bought lead weights at a model train store. Took them outside, hammered them down (so they wouldnt be thicker than the base is high) and cut each weight into thirds (so I could use 1 weight for 3 hormagaunts). I then cut each of those thirds down so they fit in the large & small sides of the slot. Here is a picture (took it with my phone, so excuse the blurriness):
I can put their faces forward right to the table and theyll still flop back into place.

You might want to look at Tungsten weights. Tungsten is far heavier than lead (almost twice the density), It's heavier even than Depleted Uranium.
It's sold for use as malleable fishing weights and is probably exactly what you are looking for.
Something like this...

Seems like a lot of extra weight for something i would expect to be able to stand better! These models already need to be built painted and are over priced, sounds like we are getting gypped by GW.

Snipped pennies not viable for two reasons:
1. Snipped pennies are sharp. Two bandages later, here comes point number 2:
2. Not very dexterous. Hence, two bandages later convinces me not to try anymore.
I did walk into a hobby shop that sells historical miniatures, and saw something I didn't think about before. It is a two bottle kit for $30 that you can use to turn into resin really quickly.
Forgot the name...Plastitliks? Plasti-something.
Someone give me a clue here!

For a great deal less you can get any two part epoxy at the hardware store. Devcon or Gorilla Glue make some good stuff. I'd go with the tungsten weights though.

I use tungsten on my slotta bases. I don't use that malleable tungsten putty because it never hardens. I use tungsten disks.
